First Mission Fires Pegasus Bullet

'TDN Rising Star' First Mission (Street Sense) worked a five-furlong bullet in 1:00.20 (1/48) Friday morning at the Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots in New Orleans in preparation for the $3-million GI Pegasus World Cup Invitational at Gulfstream Park Jan. 27.

The GIII Stonestreet Lexington S. winner and GII Clark S. runner-up worked shortly before 6 a.m. with exercise rider Kelvin Perez aboard.

“It was a really, really good breeze,” trainer Brad Cox said. “I know that's typical trainer talk but he's a good work horse. He was by himself. There actually was a set in front of him. I don't remember exactly whose barn it was, but he slipped up the inside on them nearing the wire and galloped out very, very well.”

Cox continued, “He's doing great. We've got a couple more works. But that's the first five-eighths he's had down here. I love what I saw from him.”

The Godolphin homebred had a trio of half-mile works at the Fair Grounds heading into Friday's exercise. “I sharpened him up a little bit,” Cox said. “We want to make sure we go to Florida with a fit, happy horse. We took a big step forward today with trying to get him down there in good order.”

Street Sense’s Otto the Conqueror Game in Springboard Mile

Otto the Conqueror (Street Sense) picked up a black-type feather for his cap with this gutsy victory in the Remington Springboard Mile S., and picked up 10 points for the Road to the Kentucky Derby.

A dominating four-length winner last out over a Churchill allowance optional claiming group which included next out GII Kentucky Jockey Club winner Honor Marie (Honor Code) and SW Just Steel (Justify), he'd broken his maiden two back over that track by a neck and ran a length second on unveiling Aug. 13 at Ellis Park to eventual GIII Street Sense victor Liberal Arts (Arrogate).

Locking horns almost from the jump, Otto the Conqueror and Glengarry (Maximus Mischief) refused to give each other peace, their duel opening a sizeable gap between the pair and the field.

Taking the slimmest of margins coming into the straight, the eventual winner sustained his long drive best in the end, scoring his Derby points by a 3/4-length over his long-time rival as Magic Grant (Good Magic) closed from the rear to pick up third.

“It's off to Hot Springs [Arkansas and Oaklawn Park] and Derby trail, here we come,” said Steve Asmussen, who has won this contest seven times. “You just saw two nice horses hook up from start to finish.”

The first to the races for dam Dream It Is as 3-year-old eldest sister Petit Reve (Empire Maker) has yet to make a start, Otto the Conqueror sets a high bar for the siblings to follow for his young dam, a pair of half-sisters; a Blame yearling and a 2023 Curlin. Dream It Is was bred to Uncle Mo for 2024. This is the female line of European champion 3-year-old filly MG1SW Bosra Shame, who went on to produce GSW Rosberg (A.P. Fasig-Tipton ’21 October Yearling Sale Topper A Winner On Debut At Woodbine

LOOSE WIRE (c, 3, Street Sense–Dance With Doves, by A.P. Indy) topped the '21 Fasig-Tipton October Yearling Sale when he was purchased for $925,000 by Mike Repole and St. Elias Stable. Debuting around two turns as the 2-1 second choice here, the hooded bay colt with Lasix exited the outside gate cleanly, raced mid-pack into the first turn and traveled well up the backstretch. Given his cue before the far turn, Loose Wire took control, continued to accelerate and cantered home by 6 1/4 lengths over Giovannino (Into Mischief). Catching Up with 2006 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Winner Street Sense

With a patented Calvin Borel ride, Street Sense skimmed the rail and ricocheted off the turn with such momentum that perhaps even Borel was caught by surprise, as he glanced back several times before finally easing the Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner past the wire while 10 lengths clear. Much was made at the time of the 'Juvenile Jinx,' as no Juvenile winner had yet won the GI Kentucky Derby the following year. The charismatic Street Sense promptly put that myth to bed the next spring, then added the GI Travers for good measure. Now two of his own Grade I-winning sons stand alongside him at Darley.

“I looked after Street Sense for his first season in 2008 in Australia,” said stallion manager Graham Lovatt. “Has as much character in a stallion that I've ever worked with. He'll 'ask' for a carrot or a treat when you walk by and will actually lift a leg up as a prompt. He'll know when his pin is out of his stall door and he'll open it up with his nose/muzzle to get his carrot. He's very respectful. Not a mean bone in his body. I've never known him to bite or kick anyone out of malice.”
