Arrogate’s Liberal Arts Splashes to Street Sense Victory

Evan and Stephen Ferraro's homebred Liberal Arts, relishing the added distance and sloppy conditions, charged to the lead inside the final furlong to win the GIII Street Sense S. by a widening 2 3/4 lengths at Churchill Downs Sunday. The gray colt trailed the strung-out field as Gettysburg Address (Constitution) skipped along on an unchallenged lead through fractions of :23.73 and :47.93. The field began bunching up heading into the far turn, but Liberal Arts was still last at the top of the lane. Informed Patriot was first to overtake the pacesetter with three-sixteenths of a mile to run, but Liberal Arts was tipped out to the center of the track and powered to the lead with authority to win going away. Favored Moonlight closed for second.

“This horse really has improved as the distances got longer,” winning rider Cristian Torres said. “Turning for home today, I just had a ton of horse beneath me and I think he really appreciated going two turns. I got him to relax on the backside and he won like a professional today.”

Liberal Arts, who earned 10 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby series, gave trainer Robert Medina his first graded victory.

“We knew we wouldn't be able to get longer distances until the fall, so we made sure this horse had some experience under his belt, but knew he'd appreciate the stretch out,” said Medina. “Going two turns today I think was the key. He's made five starts this year and talking with the ownership group the plan is now to lay him up until next year and point to some of the big 3-year-old races.”

On the board while sprinting in his first two starts, Liberal Arts graduated going seven furlongs at Ellis Park Aug. 13. He was trying two turns for the first time Sunday off a third-place effort in the one-mile GIII Iroquois S. at Churchill Downs Sept. 16.

Pedigree Notes:

Bred and campaigned by Stephen Ferraro, the winner's dam, Ismene was a two-time stakes winner in California in 2011 and competed in the 2013 GI Breeders' Cup F/M Sprint. The mare sold to Mike Abraham for $65,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton February sale.

Liberal Arts is the ninth graded winner for his late sire Arrogate, whose son Arcangelo is expected to be a favorite for Saturday's GI Breeders' Cup Classic.

Churchill September, Fall Stakes Worth $8.31 Million; No Turf Racing at September Meet

Churchill Downs will host 26 stakes races worth $8.31 million during its upcoming September and Fall meets.

The 14-day September meet, which runs from Sept. 15-Oct. 2, will include 11 stakes races worth a total of $3.36 million. The line-up is led by the $400,000 GII Lukas Classic for 3-year-olds and up at 1 1/8 miles and the $300,000 GIII Ack Ack S. for 3-year-olds and up at one mile–a Breeders' Cup “Win and You're In” race for the GI Dirt Mile–Oct. 1.

The meeting also hosts the first races on the Road to the 2023 Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks series with the $300,000 GIII Iroquois S. and $300,000 GIII Pocahontas S. on Sept. 17. Both races will also award points on the Breeders' Cup “Dirt Dozen” series for their respective divisions.

Racing during the September meet will be run exclusively on the dirt course to allow the track's new Bermuda-hybrid turf course to continue to mature to its ultimate potential. Turf racing is projected to return for the Fall Meet, which will be held Oct. 30-Nov. 27.

The Fall meet will host 15 stakes events worth $4.95 million. The meet is anchored by the Nov. 25 $750,000 GI Clark S.

Churchill will host its 18th annual “Stars of Tomorrow” during the Fall meet, with the $200,000 GIII Street Sense S. and the $200,000 Rags to Riches S. highlighting the opening-day card Oct. 30 and the $400,000 GII Kentucky Jockey Club S. and $400,000 GII Golden Rod S. scheduled for Nov. 26.

Churchill Downs will host the Claiming Crown Championship Series for the first time Nov. 12. The 24th renewal of the event will feature eight races worth $1.05 million.

The condition book of scheduled races for the September meet was released online Monday and features 135 races and a record $13,791,000 in prize money, for a daily average of $985,071. Maiden special weight races have a $120,000 purse, while allowance races range from $127,000 to $141,000.

All purses, including claiming races, include prize money from the Kentucky Thoroughbred Development Fund.

Howling Time Gets First Stakes Win In Street Sense

After stalking the pace set by Sport Pepper throughout the 1 1/16 miles, Howling Time took over the lead midstretch to win Sunday's Street Sense Stakes at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. In only the second start of his short career, the 2-year-old son of Not This Time draw off for a 3 1/4-length victory.

Through early fractions of :24.65 and :49.31, Sport Pepper held a one-length lead over the field of seven, with Red Danger and Skippylongstocking in second and third on the backstretch. Howling Time sat fourth, starting his move as the field entered the far turn.

Around the Churchill Downs bend, Howling Time went three-wide, looming up on the outside of Sport Pepper as they hit the stretch. After pulling even with the frontrunner briefly, Howling Time poured on the speed, taking over the front and pulling away in the last furlong. Red Danger was second with Red Knobs third.

“Turning for home I could feel I had a lot of horse underneath me,” said Talamo. “Around the turn, I smooched at him and he just took off. It's always special to win for these connections. This horse was very impressive today and really ran well around two turns for the first time.”

Howling Time paid $5.80, $4.00, and $2.80. Red Danger paid $5.40 and $3.40. Red Knobs paid $2.80.

“It's pretty fitting a horse with a Halloween theme wins today,” said Romans. “I'm just glad it was ours. He won impressively in his debut last month. He's shown us in his training and his pedigree that he should like stretching out in distance. So, winning at six furlongs on debut was very impressive. Then, to come back and do that today showed how talented he is.”

Bred in Kentucky by Springhouse Farm, Howling Time is out of the Arch mare Werewolf. Trained by Dale Romans, the 2-year-old colt is owned by Albaugh Family Stables. Consigned by Paramount Sales, Howling Time was sold to the Albaugh Family for $200,000 at the 2020 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. With this win in the Street Sense, the colt has career earnings of $190,600.

“This horse was a later purchase at Keeneland last year,” said Jason Loutsch, racing manager for Albaugh Family Stable. “We have to give the credit to Dale because he was in the back ring at the time and called us to say we had to have this colt. We knew what he did on his debut was impressive because Dale doesn't necessarily have them cranked all the way to win first out. Then, he worked well out of it and was really impressive today going two turns for the first time.”
