Sunday Insights: Maidens Tackle The Kentucky Downs Turf

ROCKETEIGHTYEIGHT (Into Mischief), a homebred for Frank Fletcher Racing, debuts for Riley Mott Sunday at Kentucky Downs. His dam is a half to the dam of successful young sire Bolt d'Oro (Medaglia d'Oro) along with GISW Global Campaign (Curlin) and SW/MGSP Sonic Mule (Distorted Humor). Under his third dam is MGISW Zensational (Unbridled's Song) and MGSW/GISP Departing (War Front).

Making his second start, Hanalei Bay (Into Mischief) was a $500,000 yearling who just missed when debuted over the Colonial Downs turf Aug. 3. He is out of a half-sister to GSW/MGISP Out of Control (Brz) (Vetorri Pire {Ire}) and to the dam of Brazil's champion 3-year-old colt George Washington (Brz) (Redattore {Brz}). TJCIS PPS

A pair of first-time starters headline this field including Sierra Sky (Uncle Mo), a $375,000 yearling out of GSW Sky Girl, herself a $1.5m broodmare purchase by Mt. Brilliant Farm out of the 2017 Keeneland November Sale. Sky Girl is a half-sister to champion 3-year-old filly Abel Tasman (Quality Road).

A Godolphin homebred is lined up just to her inside in Pendulum (Street Boss). Entered off a pair of bullet works at Turfway Park, she is from the family of champion 2-year-old colt Vindication (Seattle Slew). TJCIS PPS

Street Boss, Bucchero Fillies Share Quarter-Mile Bullet at OBS Friday

A pair of fillies shared the fastest quarter-mile work of the penultimate day of the under-tack show for the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's June Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training Friday in Ocala, while eight juveniles shared the fastest furlong time of :10 flat during a day pestered by persistent headwinds.

Consignor Omar Ramirez sent out a filly by Street Boss (hip 817) to share Friday's bullet time of :20 3/5 while working early in the day's first set.

“I was waiting for her all week,” Ramirez admitted. “I knew she was going to throw a big work. I knew whatever the bullet was going to be, she'd be close to it. She is a super nice filly.”

The juvenile, who was purchased for $75,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton October sale, RNA'd for $145,000 following a :10 flat work at the OBS Spring Sale in April.

“She worked in :10 flat in April and she galloped out huge,” Ramirez said. “I said I would buy her back for $150,000. I didn't want to give her away because she is a nice filly. That's why I sent her a quarter this time, so people know she's a runner.”

The chestnut filly is out of Desperate Chick (Tribal Rule), a half-sister to graded winner Native Bombshell (War Front). Native Bombshell is the dam of stakes-winner Lady War Machine (Street Boss).

A filly by Bucchero (hip 785) from Sergio Centeno's Blue River Bloodstock consignment, matched that :20 3/5 time some 3 1/2 hours later. The chestnut filly is out of Corfu Lady (Corfu) and from the family of multiple graded winner Halo's Image. She was bred by Saul Rosas.

Ramirez also sent out a pair of Friday's furlong bullet workers: a colt by St Patrick's Day (hip 878, video) and a colt by Yoshida (Jpn) (hip 900, video).

The St Patrick's Day colt is another returnee from the April sale where he RNA'd for $35,000 after working in :10 flat.

“He's such a pretty horse,” Ramirez said of the bay colt, who is out of a half-sister to graded stakes winner Jenny's So Great (Greatness). “I don't know why we didn't get him sold in April, but I had to put him in to work late in the day at that sale. I knew he would work well today because he's really fast.”

From the first crop of Yoshida, hip 900 put in his bullet furlong work late in Friday's session.

“I'll be really honest with you, that was a shock with that colt,” Ramirez said. “I was not expecting :10 flat from him.”

Ramirez acquired the colt for $10,000 at the OBS October sale last fall and the June sale will be his first trip through the ring this year.

“I liked the colt, he was pretty and had all the right parts,” Ramirez said of his early impressions of the youngster. “I brought him to this sale to give him more of a chance to grow up.”

Also sharing Friday's fastest furlong time of :10 flat: a filly by Twirling Candy (hip 733, video) consigned by Grassroots Training & Sales; a colt by Solomini (hip 745, video) consigned by Britton Peak; a colt by The Big Beast (hip 787, video) consigned by AVP Training and Sales; a colt by Klimt (hip 806, video) consigned by Nice and Easy Thoroughbreds; a filly by Redesdale (hip 853, video) consigned by Harris Training Center; and a colt by Arrogate (hip 868, video) consigned by Hartley/DeRenzo Thoroughbreds.

“The track was definitely slow today,” Ramirez said. “I have a really nice Vino Rosso filly (hip 783) who worked in :21 2/5 and I think she's a little faster than that. There was a headwind today and I think that affected the times.”

The under-tack show concludes with a final session beginning at 7:30 a.m. Saturday. The June sale will be held next Tuesday through Thursday with bidding commencing each day at 10 a.m.

Godolphin’s Nine-Time Group 1 Winner Anamoe Retired To Darley Kelvinside

Godolphin homebred Anamoe (Aus) (Street Boss–Anamato {Aus}, by Redoute's Choice {Aus}), a nine-time Group 1 winner, has been retired from racing and will stand at Darley Kelvinside in the Hunter Valley. The most successful horse to ever race at Group 1 level in the royal blue, the November-born foal will stand for A$121,000 (inc. GST) at the operation's New South Wales-based stud.

Godolphin trainer James Cummings said, “Our team is proud of all he has achieved during his racing career. He has never let us down and has been there for us at every start. We wish him all the best in his retirement and we can't wait to seeing his progeny coming through the stables in the years to come.

“It has been an immense honour and privilege for our team to care for Anamoe and guide him through his racing career. His health has always been our top priority and we take great pride in retiring him in such excellent condition.”

Only the second horse in over 20 years to win top-flight races at two, three and four in his native land, Anamoe was placed in both the G1 Blue Diamond S. and the G1 Golden Slipper S. prior to claiming the G1 Sires' Produce S. by three lengths as a juvenile. At three the G1 Caulfield Guineas and G1 Rosehill Guineas went his way before he took second, with interference, in the G1 Cox Plate. Last August marked the first of four consecutive Group 1 race victories in the Winx S. He added the George Main S., Might And Power, and Cox Plate in succession. In the Australian autumn, his record was further bolstered by scores in the G1 Chipping Norton S. and G1 George Ryder S. His career finale was a good third in the G1 Queen Elizabeth S. earlier this month and he retires with a record of 25-14-5-3 and $7,710,095 in earnings.

Vin Cox, Managing Director of Godolphin in Australia, added, “It is bittersweet to see Anamoe retire from the racetrack. As an iconic figure for Godolphin and the world of horseracing, he leaves a legacy that will not be forgotten and he has nothing more to prove.

Earlier this year, the Southern Hemisphere 4-year-old had been nominated for the G1 Lockinge S. at Newbury next month, and he was also under consideration for a Royal Ascot bid as recently as Apr. 13 before connections decided to call time on his career.

The eighth foal out of G1 Australian Oaks heroine Anamato, who also ran third in the GI American Oaks Invitational S. in America, the bay is a half-brother to Irish stakes winner and G3 Weld Park S. second Anamba (GB) (Shamardal). Anamoe's extended family includes G1 Oakleigh Plate hero Drum (Aus) (Maurauding {NZ}) and Australian Champion Older Horse Grand Armee (Aus) (Hennessy), as well as the New Zealand Champion 2-Year-Old Yourdeel (NZ) (Dundeel {NZ}).

Australian Finale For Anamoe Before Royal Ascot Attempt

Godolphin's decorated multiple Group 1 winner Anamoe (Aus) (Street Boss {Aus}) is aiming at the G2 Apollo S. at Randwick on Feb. 11 prior to the G1 Chipping Norton S. in his last Southern Hemisphere campaign prior to a crack at Royal Ascot, Racing.com reported on Tuesday.

“His ultimate goal this year would be to get to Royal Ascot and so his autumn would revolve around that,” Cummings told the publication. “We're looking at three to four runs in the autumn with him. We want to bring him over to Europe with plenty of residual fitness from his Australian campaign, we would like him to be full of stored energy by the time he gets there, so he can have his opportunity to produce his best run there.”

Last year's G1 Cox Plate S. hero is eyeing either the one-mile G1 Queen Anne S. or the 1 1/4-mile G1 Prince Of Wales's S. during the Royal meeting in June.

“He'd be more likely to run in a Queen Anne, but it wouldn't hurt to have him nominated in both races, just in case you'd bump into a Baaeed (GB), then you would avoid the Queen Anne and the Prince Of Wales's looks like the better option,” Cummings added.

“Having said that, both races are looking extremely strong this year and there's no hiding at Royal Ascot no matter where you run. He'd be a little foreign up the straight over a mile for the first time in his career, but if he's to win at Royal Ascot, then he's going to have to deal with a foreign challenge.

“I've considered running him in the [G1] Lockinge [S.] a month beforehand and I haven't completely given up on that, as it tends to be a clearly suitable lead-up to the Queen Anne but running him fresh off the plane has got its advantages too. I'd say the trip overseas would be the horse's swansong.

“He'll be ready to cover mares by the end of the year.”
