Dark Angel’s Dr Zempf Back To Winning Ways

Disappointing when only fifth trying a mile in The Curragh's Listed Tetrarch S. May 2, Peter Brant's TDN Rising Star Dr Zempf (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) was back in his comfort zone in Thursday's G3 Ballycorus S. as he successfully returned to the seven-furlong trip and Leopardstown venue of his Apr. 2 Listed 2000 Guineas Trial S. win. In front initially before handed a lead by the eventual third Pretreville (Fr) (Acclamation {GB}), the 13-8 favourite who was also runner-up in the G1 Phoenix S. in August blew by that rival with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining and gave generously for Colin Keane to score by two lengths from fellow Ger Lyons-trained TDN Rising Star Straight Answer (GB) (Kodiac {GB}).

“I never had a doubt that he would get a mile and I was wrong,” Lyons admitted. “Colin said that he is strengthening up all the time. He shows me plenty of speed at home and we could bring him back to six, but Colin said don't do that. I'd say his future will be in America for Peter and I'd say that is where he will win his grade 1 around two bends. That was a lovely run from Straight Answer. Rory and Barry [Mahon] are adamant that the pedigree suggests he goes further. [Jockey] Gary [Carroll] said he'll win one of those over a mile.”

Dr Zempf is the third foal out of the G3 Prix Eclipse and Listed Prix de la Vallee d'Auge winner and G3 Prix d'Arenberg third Souvenir Delondres (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}). Her first was Dancin Inthestreet (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}), who was third in the 2020 Palace of Holyroodhouse H. at Royal Ascot. She is a half to the Listed Land O'Burns Fillies' S.-placed I'm So Glad (GB) (Clodovil {Ire}) connected to the dual listed scorer and G3 Prix de Seine-et-Oise runner-up Terroir (Ire) (Fairy King) and the GII Schuylerville S. and GIII Astoria Breeders' Cup S. winner Distinct Habit (Distinctive Pro). Souvenir Delondres's 2-year-old filly by Kingman (GB) is named Visiting Hours (GB), while she also has a yearling colt by Too Darn Hot (GB).

New York City Commonwealth Cup Bound

Saturday's Listed Committed S. at Navan was as intriguing a Commonwealth Cup pointer as can be found at this stage of the season and full credit has to be handed to the race-hardened New York City (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) for making his presence felt despite being passed over by Ryan Moore. Unable to win in five starts at two but tried in the G1 Middle Park S. at Newmarket and beaten under five lengths when ninth in that September feature, the full-brother to the G2 Duke of York S.-winning sire Invincible Army was off the mark by seven lengths over five furlongs here Mar. 29. Building on that confidence boost, the bay raced alongside TDN Rising Star Straight Answer (GB) (Kodiac {GB}) on the front end throughout and proved the stronger of the pair to earn a black-type success as the stable's G2 Norfolk S. fourth Cadamosto (Ire) (No Nay Never) did best of the chasers.

“He must have been a little bit babyish or something, but he is a big powerful horse now,” Aidan O'Brien said in reference to the winner's blank season as a juvenile. “We thought he would do plenty last year, but he took until this year to win. He was very impressive again today. The plan will be to go to the [June 17 G1] Commonwealth with him. Looking at him, you would hope he would get six.”

New York City is the last known foal out of the G1 Falmouth S.-winning dam, whose aforementioned Invincible Army was also successful in the G3 Pavilion S., G3 Chipchase S. and G3 Sirenia S. and was placed in the G1 Flying Five. His family includes the G1 Prix Morny heroine Hoh Magic (GB) (Cadeaux Genereux {GB}) and the G3 Fred Darking S. winner Dandhu (GB) (Dandy Man {Ire}).

Classic Winner Set for Navan Return

Moyglare Stud Farm's 2020 G1 Irish St Leger heroine Search For A Song (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who won last term's G3 Loughbrown S. in one of six starts since that Classic highlight, makes an early seasonal debut in Saturday's 14-furlong Listed Vintage Crop S. at Navan. Not seen before May in three prior campaign openings, she faces nine rivals for her debut at the Co. Meath venue, headed by 2020 G1 Prix du Cadran heroine Princess Zoe (Ger) (Jukebox Jury {Ire}). Earlier on the seven-race card, nine 3-year-old fillies will head postward for the 10-furlong Listed Irish Stallion Farms EBF Salsabil S., a Classic trial won in 2019 by subsequent G1 Epsom Oaks runner-up Pink Dogwood (Ire) (Camelot {GB}). Contenders include Aidan O'Brien nominee G3 Weld Park S. victrix Concert Hall (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), one of three representing Ballydoyle, who ran fourth in the G1 Moyglare Stud S. and sixth in the G1 Fillies' Mile last term. Stakes action commences with the Listed Committed S. for the 3-year-old speedsters. Top of the pile in this straight dash is Juddmonte's Listed Blenheim S. winner Straight Answer (GB) (Kodiac {GB}), who makes his seasonal return coming off a last-of-eight finish in October's G1 Dewhurst S. at Newmarket.

Straight Answer Supplemented to Dewhurst

Undefeated Juddmonte homebred Straight Answer (GB) (Kodiac {GB}) has been supplemented to the Oct. 9 Darley Dewhurst S. at Newmarket. His addition brings the potential field to 12, after winning at The Curragh when unveiled on Aug. 21 and the Listed Ballyhane Blenheim S. at Fairyhouse on Sept. 20. The Ger Lyons-trained colt will possibly face G1 Goffs Vincent O'Brien National S. hero Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) for the Charlie Appleby/Godolphin axis, and Sunday's G1 Qatar Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere one-two Angel Bleu (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and Noble Truth (Fr) (Kingman {GB}) among others.

Juddmonte Racing Manager Barry Mahon said, “He's a big, scopey horse and took a bit of time to come to hand, but he's two from two and won nicely on his last start.

“While this is a very big ask, we just thought it was worth a go as it will further his education for next year to put him in Group 1 company.

“Part of the reason we supplemented was the weather forecast, it looks set fair and he's a horse that wants good ground. That would be our preference, so hopefully we don't get any nasty surprises with the weather.

“This is a big step from a listed at Fairyhouse to a Group 1 and it's his first try over seven furlongs, so there's a lot of variables, but we are excited to see if he can step up to that level.”
