Summer Sale Set to Kickstart New Season at Deauville

There is a hint that normalcy is returning to the Deauville sales ring, with the Arqana Summer Sale back up to its normal two-day stand beginning on June 30. A quality mix of 593 National Hunt and Flat horses plus wild cards are slated to be offered over the next two days, and the unraced 2-year-olds were put through their paces over the Deauville-La Touques Racecourse on June 29.

The juveniles kick start the sale, which begins at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, and continues with 156 young store horses and finishes with the Ecurie Central dispersal. On Thursday, there will be 127 fillies and mares, as well as one stallion and 206 horses-in-training will go under the hammer.

Among the juvenile lots of note are: lot 3, a Kodiac (GB) filly out of a Mount Nelson (GB) half-sister to G1 King's Stand S. hero Equiano (Fr) (Acclamation {GB}) from Knockatrina House; lot 18, an Exceed And Excel (Aus) colt who is a half-brother to the MGSW and GISP Elysea's World (Ire) (Champs Elysees {GB}) from Ecurie Yann Creff; Ecurie Prevost-Baratte's lot 37, a granddaughter of GI Mother Goose S. heroine Buster's Ready (More Than Ready) by Lope de Vega (Ire); a Siyouni (Fr) colt (lot 67) from the extended family of two-time Group 1 winner Ectot (GB) (Hurricane Run {Ire}) consigned by Ecurie Yann Creff; and Knockanglass Stable's lot 81I, a son of Night of Thunder (Ire) out of Clowning (Distorted Humor), herself a daughter of GI Gazelle S. heroine Flashing (A.P. Indy).

Leading the horses-in-training portion is G2 Italian 2000 Guineas hero Fayathaan (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) as lot 503. One of four from Roberto Biondi's Channel Consignment, the 3-year-old colt is joined by group winner Elisa Again (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}) (lot 487); 2021 G2 Derby Italiano runner-up Juan de Montalban (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) (lot 488); and the black-type winner and G3 Italian St Leger-placed Agnes (Fr) (Planteur {Ire}) (lot 502). Another Flat lot of interest is Jean-Claude Rouget's lot 489, Darkness (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), a winner of the Listed Criterium de Lyon and third in the 2021 G3 Prix La Force.

Topping the COVID-19-condensed one-day sale in 2020 was the National Hunt horse-in-training Prunay (Fr) (Prince Gibraltar {Fr}), who changed hands for €240,000. On the Flat side, a juvenile colt named Chez Pierre (Fr) by subsequent Champion First-Crop stallion Mehmas (Ire) brought €100,000. To date, he has won all three of his starts in the blue, green and white colours of American owner Roy Jackson. The overall statistics were 198 offered and 153 sold (77.3%) with a gross of €2,894,000. The average was €18,915 and the median was €9,000.

Back in a coronavirus-free 2019, the sale was conducted over two days and boasted a clearance rate of 77.7% for 296 sold from 381 offered. The gross was €7,578,502, with an average of €25,603 and a median of €15,000.

New Records For Goffs UK Spring Store Sale

At the conclusion of the two-day Goffs UK Spring Store Sale at Doncaster, demand for quality stores produced record-breaking results across the board.

Although the top price on Tuesday of £105,000 did not match the £165,000 set on Monday, a buoyant middle market resulted in 115 sold from 133 (86.5%) offered. Over the two days of selling, 41 lots brought £50,000 or more, up from 22 lots in 2019. The gross was £7,191,500 with 224 sold from 271 through the ring. The average was £32,105 (+21%) and the median was £27,000 (29%).

One of two six-figure lots on Tuesday was the sale topper, lot 193, a gelded son of Saint des Saints (Fr) from Rathmore Stud. Aiden Murphy and Kim Bailey joined forces to secure the grey for £105,000. He is out of the French listed-placed mare Nomad Attitude (Fr) (Martaline {GB}).

Also breaking into six figures was a filly by Kayf Tara (GB) (lot 295). She was offered by Goldford Stud and drew a winning bid from Olly Murphy and Aiden Murphy. A half-sister to listed-placed chaser Angel of Harlem (GB) (Presenting {GB}), the duo are out of Listed Coolmore NH Sires Mares' Hurdle victress Whoops a Daisy (GB) (Definite Article {GB}).

Goffs UK Managing Director Tim Kent commented, “Just last month, we were saying what an incredible business this is after the success of the Breeze Up Sale and it's happened again this week. Following unprecedented vendor demand for places in this sale, which led to its expansion to two-days, we were hopeful of a successful sale and we marketed this catalogue as arguably our strongest ever. That pre-sale stance made for a nervous few weeks in the build up to this sale and it is wonderful to have delivered on that hype and produced the best set of statistics in the sale's 60-year history.

“Full credit has to go to our vendors–they have backed this sale and sent us some outstanding horses. From the moment we went out on inspections, it was clear that this sale could be something special and we are delighted to have delivered a strong buying bench who embraced the marked increase in quality and drove the market back to its rightful position as one of the Premier NH Store Sales of the year. For many years, the very best stores were sold in Doncaster and its wonderful to be back at the top table where we belong.

“We would like to wish everyone all the very best with their purchases and we now turn our attention to tomorrow's Spring HIT/P2P Sale. We have two top-class days of Horses-in-Training and Point-to-Pointers and we would like to remind everyone that, due to customer feedback, we are starting tomorrow's sale an hour later at 11 a.m.”

Strong Demand For Stores at Doncaster

Buyers were out in force during the first day of the Goffs UK Spring Sale at Doncaster, which resulted in record trade across the board at the end of the first of two days of selling NH stores.

A gelded son of Kayf Tara (GB) (lot 101) drew the highest price of £165,000 when knocked down to the duo of Tom Malone and Paul Nicholls. Consigned by Lulham Bloodstock, the bay is a son of Gaye Sophie (GB) (Environment Friend {GB}), already the dam of Grade 2 hurdler Silver Hallmark (GB) (Shirocco {Ger}) and listed hurdler Gayebury (GB) (Overbury {Ire}), who has also placed second at Grade 2 level.

Malone and Nicholls also snapped up the second highest price on Monday, lot 77, a gelded son of Mount Nelson (GB) from Brown Island Stables for £150,000. He is a half to the Grade 2-winning and Grade 1-placed Charbel (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}). Park Farm's Shantou gelding (lot 78) also caught their eye at £78,000. Their final acquisition on Monday was lot 91, a gelding by Kapgarde (Fr) from RH Bloodstock.

Of the 138 offered, 112 (81%) sold with an aggregate of £3,579,500. The average and median both increased sharply when preliminarily compared with the one-day sale in 2019–£31,960 (+21%) for the average and the median was £28,000 (33%). Final comparisons will be made after Tuesday's session.

Goffs UK Managing Director Tim Kent commented on Monday's buoyant trade, “The Goffs UK Spring Sale has been billed as the first and last word in British NH sales which makes it particularly gratifying to have achieved a top price of £165,000 with a British-bred horse, by the champion British-based NH sire, offered by a relatively new British based vendor and sold to the champion British NH trainer, with another leading British based NH trainer acting as underbidder.

“Today has been a great start to the annual Spring Sale and we have achieved some vibrant results at all levels of the market. We look forward to more of the same tomorrow when we continue with the second session of NH stores before two days of Horses in Training and Pointers on Wednesday and Thursday.”

Due to unprecedented demand this year, the sale continues on Tuesday beginning at 11 a.m. Later this week, the Goffs UK Spring HIT/P2P Sale begins it's two-day run on May 19, also at 11 a.m.
