Curlin Debutante Runs to the Money at Santa Anita

2nd-Santa Anita, $61,000, Msw, 4-18, 3yo/up, f/m, 6 1/2f, 1:16.86, ft, 5 1/2 lengths.
CURVETTE (f, 3, Curlin–Fiftyshadesofhay {MGSW & MGISP, $1,097,951}, by Pulpit) was bet like a good thing for her debut Sunday at Santa Anita and ran to the money with an open-length score for Bob Baffert. Showing an upbeat local worktab capped by a five-furlong spin in 1:00 flat (9/64) Apr. 11, the Stonestreet homebred broke cleanly as the 6-5 favorite. Tracking barnmate Reem (Danza) from a close second through a :22.07 quarter, the bay turned up the heat on that rival in hand past a :45.27 half and drew on even terms heading for home. Drifting in outside the furlong grounds, she took charge soon after straightening out and kicked clear despite staying on her left lead for a 5 1/2-length success. Reem held for second. The winner's dam, bought by Stonestreet for $1.4 million at Keeneland November in 2014, has a yearling Medaglia d'Oro filly and produced a colt by Ghostzapper Mar. 29. Sales History: $95,000 RNA Ylg '19 KEESEP. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $36,600. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.

Forest Music, Dam Of Maclean’s Music, Dies At Age 20

Forest Music, a cornerstone of the Stonestreet Farm racing and breeding program, has died at age 20, the operation announced Friday on social media.

The Unbridled's Song mare was a vanguard for Stonestreet, as the first graded stakes winner for an operation that is now a regular producer of graded success on the racetrack and the breeding shed.

Forest Music initially raced for owner Michael Gill, who campaigned her to a victory in the Grade 3 Miss Preakness Stakes, a pair of non-graded stakes scores, and third-place efforts in the G1 Prioress Stakes and G1 Test Stakes.

She was purchased privately by Stonestreet in the summer of her 4-year-old season and placed in the barn of trainer Steve Asmussen. Her first start under her new ownership came in the G2 Honorable Miss Handicap at Saratoga, and her two-length victory marked the first graded stakes win for Stonestreet Stables as an owner.

Forest Music raced two more times for Stonestreet Stables before retiring with six wins in 18 starts for earnings of $370,566.

The mare's impact was just as immediate for the Stonestreet operation once she entered the breeding shed. Her first foal was the Distorted Humor colt Maclean's Music, whose lone start was such an eye-popping triumph, it earned him a spot in the stallion barn at Hill 'n' Dale Farms in Kentucky. Maclean's Music sired Preakness Stakes winner Cloud Computing from his first crop at stud.

Other runners of note produced by Forest Music include Grade 3 winners Kentuckian (by Tiznow), Electric Forest (by Curlin), and Uncle Chuck (by Uncle Mo).

After the early success of Maclean's Music, Forest Music's foals became sought after in the auction ring. Sonoma County (by Street Cry) brought $1.2 million as a yearling in the months following Maclean's Music's maiden score. In 2015, Senor Jobim, a full-brother to Maclean's Music, brought $1,525,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Between those seven-figure horses, Kentuckian brought $610,000 as a yearling.

Forest Music had two surviving fillies. Electric Forest is currently a member of the Stonestreet broodmare band. Equineline reports show that Forest Music had her final foal, a filly by Bernardini, on Jan. 25 of this year.

Rachel’s Valentina To Visit Into Mischief In 2021

Rachel's Valentina, a Grade 1 winner and the only daughter of Hall of Famer Rachel Alexandra, will be bred to record-setting sire Into Mischef, the mare's owner Stonestreet Farm announced Monday on social media.

The mating would produce the 8-year-old daughter of Bernardini's fourth foal.

Her first foal, the Curlin colt Alejandro, is a newly-turned 3-year-old, and he has raced twice. Alejandro finished fourth on debut in September at Churchill Downs, then he finished second to future Smarty Jones Stakes winner Caddo River in a November maiden special weight, also at Churchill Downs. Trained by Steve Asmussen, who also conditioned Rachel Alexandra, Alejandro is working toward his 3-year-old debut at the Fair Grounds.

Rachel's Valentina followed up with a Pioneerof the Nile filly, a recent 2-year-old who remains unnamed. She delivered a Curlin filly in 2020, then she was bred to Quality Road for the 2021 foaling season, but the mating did not catch.

Racing as a homebred for Stonestreet Stables, Rachel's Valentina won two of six starts for earnings of $738,800. After breaking her maiden on debut, the filly won the Grade 1 Spinaway Stakes, then she finished second in the 2015 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at Keeneland. At three, she finished second in the G1 Ashland Stakes and competed in that year's Kentucky Oaks.

Rachel's Valentina is the second and final foal out of 2009 Horse of the Year and 2016 Hall of Fame inductee Rachel Alexandra, who was pensioned from broodmare duty after a pair of difficult foalings. Complications from the birth of Rachel's Valentina required abdominal surgery, an extended stay at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital, and a long recovery period after she returned to Stonestreet Farm.

Jess's Dream, Rachel Alexandra's first foal, won his lone start, and he now stands at Ocala Stud in Florida, where his first foals are 3-year-olds of 2021. The son of Curlin was recently represented by his first stakes winner at stud, when Chess's Dream won the G3 Kitten's Joy Stakes on Jan. 30 at Gulfstream Park.

Into Mischief, a 16-year-old son of Harlan's Holiday, stands at Spendthrift Farm in Lexington, Ky., for an advertised fee of $225,000.

He comes off a record-shattering season in 2020, where he set the all-time single-season progeny earnings mark, with over $22 million. It was his second consecutive year finishing atop North America's general sire list by earnings. His runners were led in 2020 by Horse of the Year Authentic, champion female sprinter Gamine, Grade 1 winner Dayoutoftheoffice, who was an Eclipse finalist for champion 2-year-old filly.

RACHEL'S VALENTINA will visit INTO MISCHIEF in 2021! She delivered a lovely filly by Curlin in 2020, has a two-year-old…
