Graded Stakes Performer Gold Standard, Half-Sister To Zaajel Added To Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Winter Mixed Sale

Fasig-Tipton has cataloged an additional two supplemental entries to its 2021 Kentucky Winter Mixed Sale.

These entries are catalogued as hips 670 and 671 and may now be viewed online. Print versions of supplemental entries will be available on the sales grounds at sale time.

  • Maqboola (Hip 670): Five-year-old mare is a half-sister to undefeated 3-year-old filly Zaajel, impressive winner of the Grade 3 Forward Gal Stakes at Gulfstream Park this past Saturday. She is also a half-sister to Ajaaweed, who placed in the G2 Remsen Stakes at two, and the G3 Sam F. Davis Stakes last year at three. A multiple winner herself, Maqboola is offered in foal to Champion Good Magic by Hunter Valley Farm, agent.
  • Gold Standard (Hip 671): Five-year-old daughter of Medaglia d'Oro was placed in the G3 Remington Park Oaks and G3 Comely Stakes at three. In the Remington Park Oaks, she was second, beaten just a half-length, by multiple graded stakes winner and millionaire Lady Apple. She finished nearly eight lengths clear of the third-place finisher. A four-time winner of $269,384, she is from the immediate family of Grade 1 winners Dream Supreme and Spinning Round. She is offered as a broodmare prospect by Gainesway, agent for Stonestreet and LNJ Foxwoods.

Rachel’s Valentina To Visit Into Mischief In 2021

Rachel's Valentina, a Grade 1 winner and the only daughter of Hall of Famer Rachel Alexandra, will be bred to record-setting sire Into Mischef, the mare's owner Stonestreet Farm announced Monday on social media.

The mating would produce the 8-year-old daughter of Bernardini's fourth foal.

Her first foal, the Curlin colt Alejandro, is a newly-turned 3-year-old, and he has raced twice. Alejandro finished fourth on debut in September at Churchill Downs, then he finished second to future Smarty Jones Stakes winner Caddo River in a November maiden special weight, also at Churchill Downs. Trained by Steve Asmussen, who also conditioned Rachel Alexandra, Alejandro is working toward his 3-year-old debut at the Fair Grounds.

Rachel's Valentina followed up with a Pioneerof the Nile filly, a recent 2-year-old who remains unnamed. She delivered a Curlin filly in 2020, then she was bred to Quality Road for the 2021 foaling season, but the mating did not catch.

Racing as a homebred for Stonestreet Stables, Rachel's Valentina won two of six starts for earnings of $738,800. After breaking her maiden on debut, the filly won the Grade 1 Spinaway Stakes, then she finished second in the 2015 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at Keeneland. At three, she finished second in the G1 Ashland Stakes and competed in that year's Kentucky Oaks.

Rachel's Valentina is the second and final foal out of 2009 Horse of the Year and 2016 Hall of Fame inductee Rachel Alexandra, who was pensioned from broodmare duty after a pair of difficult foalings. Complications from the birth of Rachel's Valentina required abdominal surgery, an extended stay at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital, and a long recovery period after she returned to Stonestreet Farm.

Jess's Dream, Rachel Alexandra's first foal, won his lone start, and he now stands at Ocala Stud in Florida, where his first foals are 3-year-olds of 2021. The son of Curlin was recently represented by his first stakes winner at stud, when Chess's Dream won the G3 Kitten's Joy Stakes on Jan. 30 at Gulfstream Park.

Into Mischief, a 16-year-old son of Harlan's Holiday, stands at Spendthrift Farm in Lexington, Ky., for an advertised fee of $225,000.

He comes off a record-shattering season in 2020, where he set the all-time single-season progeny earnings mark, with over $22 million. It was his second consecutive year finishing atop North America's general sire list by earnings. His runners were led in 2020 by Horse of the Year Authentic, champion female sprinter Gamine, Grade 1 winner Dayoutoftheoffice, who was an Eclipse finalist for champion 2-year-old filly.

RACHEL'S VALENTINA will visit INTO MISCHIEF in 2021! She delivered a lovely filly by Curlin in 2020, has a two-year-old…

GISW Sharing Retired

Sharing (Speightstown–Shared Account, by Pleasantly Perfect), winner of the 2019 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, has been retired from racing after suffering an injury in a paddock mishap, according to an Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners release. Bred by Sagamore Farm, 4-year-old is out of the 2010 GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf heroine, Shared Account, and was purchased as a yearling by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners for $350,000 at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton Select Sale in Saratoga. Campaigned by Eclipse and Gainesway Farm, she was trained by Graham Motion throughout her career.

Eclipse President, Aron Wellman, said, “Sharing was a special filly in every sense of the word. She was bred to be special being by a Breeders' Cup winner and out of a Breeders' Cup winner. Even her dam's sire was a Breeders' Cup winner. She was special when we bought her as a yearling and she trained like she was special from the moment she had a saddle put on her at Stonestreet Farm. When Graham [Motion] got her, she exhibited special ability and she proved it with a Championship win as a 2 year-old.”

At age 2, Sharing earned TDN “Rising Star” status when breaking her maiden going seven furlongs on the Saratoga dirt before using a win in the grassy Selima S. to propel her to a Breeders' Cup victory.

Motion said, “Sharing is a special filly who will go down as one of the best I trained. Breeders' Cup wins don't come to easily.”

An Eclipse Award finalist, she was named Maryland-Bred Horse of the Year. The following season, Sharing captured Churchill's Tepin S. before finishing second in the G1 Coronation S. at Royal Ascot. Later that summer, she took the GII Edgewood S., came home a narrow fourth against older rivals in the GI Matriarch S. at Del Mar and in her final career start, she was third in Santa Anita's GI American Oaks.

In nine career starts, the chestnut won five times, placed second once and was third twice, amassing just shy of $1.1 million.

“Sharing battled through foot issues all throughout her 3 year-old season, but still managed to win major races, travel the country and represent our partnership at Royal Ascot with a brilliant second in a Group 1,” added Wellman. “We had designs on a blockbuster campaign this coming season. We're devastated we won't be able to enjoy her racing any more, but she is destined to produce special foals for many years to come. She is as classy as they come.”

Bloodlines Presented By Diamond B Farm’s Rowayton: Midnight Bourbon Begins The Last Hurrahs At Stud For Tiznow

From one of the last crops by the now-pensioned Tiznow (by Cee's Tizzy), Midnight Bourbon became his sire's 81st stakes winner with a victory in the Grade 3 Lecomte Stakes at the Fair Grounds in New Orleans on Jan. 16.

Last year, Midnight Bourbon had shown high-class form. The bay had finished second to Sittin On Go (Brody's Cause) in the G3 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes at Churchill Downs on Sept. 5 and had been third to Jackie's Warrior and Reinvestment Risk in the G1 Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park on Oct. 10 in the last start at two for Midnight Bourbon.

The son of Tiznow made his 3-year-old debut in the Lecomte, rating kindly on the lead and holding the closers at bay to finish the 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.41. The Lecomte will put Midnight Bourbon on some lists for the classics, and the handsome bay is expected to race next in the G2 Risen Star at the Fair Grounds on Feb. 13.

A classic victory would make Midnight Bourbon only the second son of Tiznow to win a classic; Da' Tara won the 2008 Belmont Stakes. The same year, Colonel John won the G1 Santa Anita Derby and Travers, then in between had finished sixth in the Kentucky Derby. That was Tiznow's best year with a classic crop of racers.

With the stallion now pensioned from breeding, there won't be too many opportunities for more classic performers. Midnight Bourbon comes from Tiznow's fourth-last crop, and the stallion has 106 2-year-olds, foals of 2019.

For the foals that are yearlings of 2021, the aged stallion bred 113 mares, with 85 reported in foal. Those pregnancies resulted in 63 live foals (56 percent live foals to mares bred). In his last breeding season, Tiznow covered 38 mares in 2020.

As a classic prospect, Midnight Bourbon is a very good-looking and well-proportioned colt with good muscle and speed for going a mile or more. Bred in Kentucky by Stonestreet and consigned to the Keeneland September yearling sale by Warrendale, Midnight Bourbon sold to Winchell Thoroughbreds for $525,000, making the second-highest price for a Tiznow yearling in 2019.

Midnight Bourbon is the fourth named foal of his dam, the Malibu Moon mare Catch the Moon, and he is the mare's fourth graded stakes winner. Catch the Moon's first foal and stakes winner was Cocked and Loaded, one of the best racers by the Tiznow stallion Colonel John. At two, Cocked and Loaded won a pair of stakes, including the G3 Iroquois Stakes at Churchill.

The mare's second foal was the best racer by Grade 1 winner Tale of Ekati, Girvin. A striking dark bay, Girvin won a pair of Grade 2 stakes, the Risen Star and Louisiana Derby in the first half of his 3-year-old season, then added the G1 Haskell during the summer of his 3-year-old season in 2017. After earning more than $1.6 million, Girvin stands at stud in Florida at Ocala Stud.

The third foal out of Catch the Moon was the gelding Pirate's Punch (Shanghai Bobby), who was one of the best racers by his sire. Pirate's Punch was three times placed at the Grade 3 level, then won the G3 Salvator Mile at Monmouth Park as a 4-year-old in 2020.

With high-class performers already on the page, Midnight Bourbon was a sales success, and he has added to the mare's succession of stakes performers. There must have been other mares who produced four stakes winners in succession, but the only other I've uncovered with about this level of quality is the great champion racemare Miesque (Nureyev), whose first four foals all won stakes. Her fourth, the Woodman mare Moon is Up, was only a listed winner, but Miesque's first and second foals – Kingmambo and East of the Moon – were both G1 winners.

Catch the Moon has a 2-year-old colt by Curlin who sold for $500,000 at the 2020 Keeneland September sale but is unnamed to date. The mare's yearling is yet another colt, this one by Quality Road.

Catch the Moon is the first foal out of stakes winner Catch My Fancy (Yes It's True), successful in the Barretts Debutante at Fairplex and the Fairfield Stakes at Solano. A $150,000 2-year-old in training, Catch My Fancy had plenty of speed, and she is the dam of stakes winners Dubini (Gio Ponti), winner of the 2019 Laurel Dash, and What a Catch (Justin Phillip), winner of the Rockville Centre Stakes.

There is plenty of speed in this family, and Catch the Moon is inbred 3×2 to Monique Rene (Prince of Ascot), a mare raced by John Franks. A winner of 29 races, including 15 stakes, Monique Rene was a legend in Louisiana racing. In addition to those mentioned above, the best racers to descend from her include Grade 1 winners Yes It's True (De Francis Memorial Dash) and Silver Max (Shadwell Turf Mile), as well as Kiss a Native, champion 3-year-old colt in Canada.
