Fiona’s Magic Wires Davona Dale at 9-1; Champion Just F Y I Scratched with Fever

Stonehedge LLC's homebred Fiona's Magic (f, 3, St Patrick's Day–Mollie's Magic, by Factum) was catapulted into the spotlight on a Saturday reeling from several pre-race scratches of major players in significant graded events. Gulfstream Park's GII Davona Dale S. presented by FanDuel TV, a Road to the Kentucky Oaks race worth $200,000 as well as points on a 50-25-15-10-5 scale, was not immune as Eclipse champion and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Just F Y I (Justify) developed a fever Saturday morning after shipping to Gulfstream from Payson Park. She was scratched just hours before what was to be her much-anticipated 3-year-old debut by her Hall of Fame trainer, Bill Mott.

“She was fine, but she spiked a fever and her temperature has just kept going up,” said Mott.

Undefeated 'TDN Rising Star' and former $1.15-million Keeneland September yearling Leslie's Rose (Into Mischief), who had been expected to mount the most serious challenge in the field to Just F Y I, inherited the mantle of heavy favoritism in the Davona Dale, but it was an under-the-radar Fiona's Magic at 9-1 who prevailed. A winner of two straight late last year while sprinting over this surface, Fiona's Magic made her sophomore debut with a runner-up finish in the Feb. 3 GIII Forward Gal S. at seven furlongs after relinquishing the lead at the top of the stretch to R Harper Rose (Khozan).

With expectations weighing on Leslie's Rose in the Davona Dale, Fiona's Magic popped out of the gate on top as 'TDN Rising Star' and Glitter Woman S. winner Into Champagne (Into Mischief) took a right turn before recovering to pressure from third as Cash Run S. runner-up Queen's Martini (Mucho Macho Man) tracked and Leslie's Rose found a sweet spot in the clear in fourth. Fiona's Magic was left alone for the :24.59 first quarter and was still running easily without a threat by the time the half was clocked in :47.47.

Tyler Gaffalione on the winner still rode confidently rounding the turn and began pumping his mount with gusto into the stretch as Leslie's Rose advanced and tried to find a seam to their inside. Irad Ortiz, Jr. couldn't quite get through on the favorite and shifted out, but Leslie's Rose was left with too much to do and could only muster third behind a driving Fiona's Magic and Into Champagne, who briefly looked a winner but couldn't match the determination of Fiona's Magic and settled for second by a half-length. Fiona's Magic covered the one-turn mile in 1:37.16.

Winning trainer Michael Yates also upset this race last year at 46-1 with Dorth Vader (Girvin), whose best finish to eventual divisional champion Pretty Mischievous (Into Mischief) in three tries as the season unfolded was a second in the GI Acorn S.

“I didn't give Tyler any instructions [Saturday],” said Yates. “I said, 'Ride the race how it comes up.'”

Yates did not have a plan for Fiona's Magic immediately following the race.

“[We'll] enjoy today and talk about the rest tomorrow. I thought she was very capable of it. She's been coming along steadily.”

Pedigree Notes:

Fiona's Magic becomes the first stakes winner for St Patrick's Day, a full-brother to Triple Crown winner American Pharoah. She's a member of the first crop of the Journeyman Stallions-based sire, as well as just the second black-type winner for Factum as a broodmare sire. The latter's other stakes winner is Fiona's Magic's half-brother Cajun's Magic (Cajun Breeze).

The unraced Mollie's Magic has a 2-year-old colt named Blazing Hot (Khozan) and a yearling full-brother to Cajun's Magic. She was barren for 2024.

Gulfstream’s Rainbow 6 Pays $218,767 On Meet’s Closing Day

A mandatory payout on closing day of the Spring/Summer Meet at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., yielded multiple payoffs of $218,767.70 Sunday.

The popular multi-race wager had gone unsolved for 15 consecutive racing days heading into the mandatory payout. A carryover pool of $745,396.50 helped to generate a Rainbow 6 handle of $3,922,471 Sunday.

The Rainbow 6 carryover jackpot is usually only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day's pool usually goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool. However, on mandatory payout days, the entire pool is paid out to the bettor or bettors with the most winners in the six-race sequence.

The Late Pick-5 produced a $21,513 payoff.

Apprentice-on-the-rise Alberto Burgos finished up the Spring/Summer Meet with an impressive four-win day, winning both ends of the early double with Inedatequila ($9.80) in Race 1 and Grace's Drama ($5.80) in Race 2. He added victories aboard Vuyelwa ($13) in Race 4 and Yodel E. A. Who ($5.40) in Race 10.

Jockey Edgard Zayas successfully defended his Spring/Summer Meet title with 137 wins, 10 more than runner-up Miguel Vasquez. Zayas also was first in purses-won with more than $4.15 million.

Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. led all trainers with 59 victories, while Ralph Nicks topped all trainers with more than $1.5 in purses-won.

Stonehedge LLC was tops among owners with 24 wins and $1,190,720 in purses.

South Florida Thoroughbred racing action will move to Gulfstream Park West Saturday, for the Fall Turf Festival Meet, which will offer 41 programs through Nov. 26. Racing will be conducted five days a week at Gulfstream Park West on a Wednesday-through-Sunday schedule with one exception.  A special Columbus Day program will be conducted on Monday, Oct. 12 instead of Wednesday, Oct. 14.

Due to Covid-19 protocols, racing will be conducted without spectators. Owners will be allowed to attend the races only on the days their horses are scheduled to run. The Gulfstream Park West races will be streamed on gulfstreampark.com, 1/STbet.com and Xpressbet.com.

Live racing will return to Gulfstream Park for the 2020-2021 Championship Meet in December.

Go Jo Jo Go Sitting On ‘Go’ For Florida Sire Stakes Susan’s Girl

Stonehedge LLC's Go Jo Jo Go took a little while to really get going, saving her very best for start of the 2020 FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes series at Gulfstream Park.

The Michael Yates-trained daughter of Khozan, who graduated with an upset victory in the $100,000 Desert Vixen Aug. 1 in her fourth career start, is sitting on 'go' for Saturday's $200,000 Susan's Girl.

The Susan's Girl, a seven-furlong event for 2-year-old fillies, will co-headline Saturday's Florida Sire Stakes program at Gulfstream Park with the $200,000 Affirmed, a seven-furlong open division of the series for juveniles sired by accredited Florida stallions. The $75,000 Proud Man, a mile turf stakes for 2-year-olds and the $75,000 Sharp Susan, a mile turf stakes for juvenile fillies, will be supporting stakes on a 12-race program with a noon first-race post time. The Susan's Girl will be included in the Rainbow 6 sequence Saturday, when a mandatory payout is scheduled.

Go Jo Jo Go, who gave Gilbert Campbell's Stonehedge Farm its 14th success in the tradition-rich Florida Sire Stakes series while scoring at 21-1 in the six-furlong Desert Vixen, had more than her share of misfortune in the first three starts of her career. After clipping heels and unseating her rider as the 8-5 favorite in her May 14th debut, Go Jo Jo Go experienced bumping at the start of her next two races in which she finished third May 20 and fifth July 11.

Although the Stonehedge homebred once again experienced bumping at the start of the Desert Vixen, she rallied five-wide on the turn and drew off to a 1 ¼-length victory over favorite Princess Secret.

“The [Sire] Stakes were kind of always in the plans. It didn't look like she was a contender going into the first leg, but the racing experience all helps with young horses. One or two races don't define their career, even if they're bad,” Yates said. “She showed a lot of positive things in her first couple of races that gave us enough encouragement to take a shot

Although Go Jo Jo Go took bettors by surprise in the Desert Vixen, her trainer was far from shocked by her breakthrough performance.

“She's a horse from Day 1, when I got her from Stonehedge, she's been very forward. She wants to do a lot every time she goes to the track, which makes her a little difficult to train, as well, because she wants to do so much all the time,” Yates said, “But we think we've figured her out. Time will tell.”

Yates doesn't expect the seven furlongs of the Susan's Girl to pose any problem for Go Jo Jo Go.

“She finished really well last time. Hopefully we can get away from the gate in good order and just kind of sit on her and let her make her one run down the lane,” Yates said. “That's the plan.”

Leonel Reyes, who rode five winners on Sunday's program at Gulfstream Park, has the return mount aboard Go Jo Jo Go.

Stonehedge, which has four contenders for the Affirmed, including $100,000 Dr. Fager winner Breeze On By, will also be represented in the Susan's Girl by Ralph Nicks-trained Oh Deborah.

The homebred daughter of Winslow Homer won at first asking July 19, stalking the pacesetter before drawing clear by 3 ½ lengths.

“She's an obvious closer off her first race. We're adding blinkers and we'll see how she does. There's a lot of time between races. She kicked the [stall] wall and hurt her hind foot or she would have run in the first leg. That's why she was scratched,” Nicks said. “She's training well. She acts like a horse that wants to run on down the racetrack.”

Samy Camacho has the return mount for the Susan's Girl.

Princess Secret, owned by trainer Daniel Pita, looms as the Stonehedge's most serious obstacle to capturing another Florida Sire Stakes victory. The daughter of Khozan was victorious in her May 7 debut with a front-running four-length victory. She met the boys in the first juvenile allowance of the Spring/Summer Meet July 5, finishing second, 1 ½ lengths behind highly regarded Papetu after getting bumped around at the start. Princess Secret set the pace in the Desert Vixen before being overtaken by Go Jo Jo Go inside the final 1/16th of a mile.

Pita has given the return call to Miguel Vasquez.

Arindel and trainer Juan Alvarado will be represented by two daughters of Brethren, Freak and Lyrical, in the Susan's Girl. Freak, who finished third in her July 11 debut, made a sweeping move to the lead before weakening late in the Desert Vixen, finishing third, a nose behind Princess Secret for second. Lyrical, who broke her maiden in her second start, was an early factor in the Desert Vixen before fading to sixth.

Hector Berrios will return aboard Freak, while Emisael Jaramillo has the call on Lyrical.

Alluramore, who is owned by trainer Steven Dwoskin, will return in the Susan's Girl after finishing an even fourth in her career debut in the Desert Vixen under Victor Lebron, who has the call Saturday.
