New Research, Racetrack Case Studies Highlight Agenda For NTRA-NHC Contest Workshop At Racing Symposium

New research findings on contest player habits, case studies on the impact of contests at several racetracks, including Kentucky Downs and Hawthorne Race Course, and a perspective from a longtime contest player highlight the upcoming National Horseplayers Championship (NHC) Contest Workshop this coming Monday, Dec. 6.

The workshop, which will be held in the Catalina Ballroom – Salon L, will begin at 3:00 p.m. MST, and is part of the 47th annual University of Arizona Global Symposium on Racing.

Any registered symposium attendee will receive a $500 discount on the purchase of an NHC berth to be awarded at their organization's contest during the 2022 NHC Tour season.

‘Beat Byk Challenge’ Returns Offering Berth In 2022 NHC

Steve Byk, host of the Thoroughbred radio news magazine “At the Races” on Sirius XM, is once again partnering with the National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) to send one NHC Tour member to Las Vegas to compete in the National Horseplayers Championship (NHC) in January 2022.

The “Beat Byk NHC Challenge” will be conducted over three weeks from Oct. 1-Oct. 13. Byk will pick a horse in each of the remaining 26 'Win and You're In' races held during the time span and leading to the Breeders' Cup World Championships on Nov. 5-6. Listeners will be encouraged to log in to https://www.ntra.com/beatbyk/ where they will either use Byk's selection to win the featured race or try to 'beat Byk' by selecting another horse.

All who correctly select the winning horse in each round will advance to a Nov. 13 NHC online qualifier limited to winning participants from the promotion. Participants may qualify only once during the promotional period. The winner of the “Beat Byk” Online Qualifier in November will represent “At the Races” at the 2022 NHC Jan. 28-30 at Bally's Las Vegas.

NHC Tour membership is required to compete in the November NHC online qualifier. Any participant who “Beats Byk” in any of the weekly contests and is not already a Tour member will be able to join the NHC Tour for a special offer of only $10.00 for the remainder of the 2021 NHC Tour. Those who “Bet with Byk” and win a spot in the NHC online qualifier by picking the winner also will be required to join the Tour ($50 annual membership) to be eligible to win the NHC berth. Tour Membership is good for the remainder of the 2021 calendar year and any 2022 qualifiers for the 2022 NHC. Complete rules for the Beat Byk Challenge can be found at https://www.ntra.com/beatbyk/.

‘I See Both Sides’: Trainer Keri Brion Talks Realities Of Steeplechase Racing

Trainer Keri Brion was a guest on Steve Byk's “At The Races” radio show last week, following her rollercoaster of an opening day at Belmont Park on Sept. 16.

In the first race, the William Entenmann Memorial Hurdle Stakes, the Brion-trained Grade 1 winner Baltimore Bucko fell at fence three and suffered a fatal injury. In the second race, she saddled The Mean Queen to win her second Grade 1 of the year in the Lonesome Glory.

Baltimore Bucko's fatality sparked significant social media discussion about jumps racing, and Brion took the opportunity on Byk's show to speak out.

“Whenever a horse falls in jump racing, our sport gets absolutely crucified,” Brion said. “I understand it looks horrible, and it was, it was heartbreaking for all of us to watch. Not just us close to the horse, but obviously everyone else. The one thing I just want to say about that is, you know, our sport is dangerous, but so is flat racing. You see these horses that suffer catastrophic injuries on the flat, and it happens more on the flat than it even does over jumps, to be honest with you. It's very, very rare that we have a fall like that where they don't actually get back up.

“I don't want to cast this off as 'just one of those things,' because we do need to do better, and the NSA is currently and always trying to find better options. I think we're gonna switch to a different type of a fence. I think by the time we are up there again next year, there's gonna be a safer model of hurdle up there that we'll be running over, which is something to look forward to.”

Brion carries a strong social media presence, and extended an offer to talk about the realities of her sport with anyone willing to listen.

“I see both sides and I understand how uneducated people right away are like, 'I hate watching these races and I hate seeing them,' but do you really think we're going to force a 1200-lb animal to go jump over fences if they don't want to?” she asked. “I mean, honest to God, do you think we're capable of doing that? No, we're not. I'd love to take a group of people that wanna say they're being forced and they don't like it, I'd love to take them to watch these horses school in the mornings. When they realize they're going to the schooling field, their whole demeanor changes. They get so excited that they get to go jumping.”

Baltimore Bucko is Brion's first Grade 1 winner, capturing the G1 A. P. Smithwick Memorial on July 22, 2021. She talked about what the horse meant to her personally.

“He was very, very special to me,” the trainer said. “Obviously I talked to you at some stage, maybe after his Smithwick win, and he was just kind of the gift that just kept on giving for his owners and for me. What he might have lacked a little bit in ability, he made up in heart. I can assure everyone he was 100 percent going out there, and it was unfortunately just, it was one of those things. We'll never have him back, and it's hard to see his stall here in the barn in the morning – we haven't filled it yet. It was tough, but he did go out doing what he loved to do. There was nothing more in the world that that horse loved to do than to run and jump.”

Shear, Smith, Shulman, Byk Named 2021 NTWAB Award Winners

John Shear, who retired from his post as Santa Anita Park's paddock guard this year at age 100, will be honored along with retired Del Mar publicist Dan Smith, Turf writer Lenny Shulman and radio personality Steve Byk during the National Turf Writers And Broadcasters' 61st annual Awards Dinner Wednesday, Nov. 3.

The NTWAB Awards Dinner is the organization's only fundraiser and a portion of the proceeds of the event are used toward scholarships for prospective racing journalists and to support other Thoroughbred industry charities. The NTWAB Awards Dinner returns to its traditional date on the Breeders' Cup Week calendar after a one-year hiatus and will be held at the iconic Brigantine Seafood and Oyster Bar in Del Mar, California.

Shear will be honored with the Mr. Fitz Award for “typifying the spirit of racing”. During his time with Santa Anita, Shear was entrusted with keeping horses and patrons safe, and famously risked his life in that endeavor 10 years ago at age 90 to put his 5-foot, 115-pound body between a loose horse and a child–resulting in multiple fractures. He was one of the most recognizable employees at Santa Anita and worked as a paddock guard for nearly 60 years, retiring this past summer.

Smith, who served more than 40 years as full-time director of media relations at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, will be honored with the Joe Palmer Award for meritorious service to racing. Smith was at the forefront of Del Mar's innovations that attracted new fans and enhanced the experience of traditional customers, while always putting the racing product front and center. Prior to his career in media relations, Smith covered racing and other sports for the Los Angeles Times. Prior to his retirement in 2021, the Dan Smith Press Box was christened at Del Mar.

Shulman, the features editor at BloodHorse magazine for 20 years and the author of four books including “Justify: 111 Days to Triple Crown Glory,” will be honored with the Walter Haight Award for career excellence in Turf writing. Shulman also wrote “Ride of Their Lives,” a look at the troubled lives of some jockeys, and two novels, “Long Way From Home” and “Points.”

Byk, the host of the popular “At the Races with Steve Byk” show on SiriusXM, will be honored with the Jim McKay Award for career excellence in broadcasting. Byk's five-day-a-week news magazine has become a must-listen for many industry participants and fans. Byk began writing about racing in 2002, eventually developing DerbyTrail.com. He joined 'At the Races and Beyond' on Sirius in 2005 and took over the show in 2007.

Tickets for the NTWAB Awards Dinner, which can be purchased through EventBrite, are $80 for NTWAB members and Breeders' Cup credentialed media and $100 for non-members and guests.
