Soldier Hollow’s Rosacea Strikes For Reservoirs Triumph

Fresh off accounting for 'TDN Rising Star' Good Too (Fr) (Ectot {GB}) in a Sept. 22 conditions heat at Saint-Cloud in her third start, Haras de la Perelle's homebred Stephane Wattel trainee Rosacea (Ire) (Soldier Hollow {GB}) continued on an upward trajectory with an impressive tally tackling one mile in Tuesday's G3 Prix des Reservoirs at Deauville. She had previously bettered an Aug. 1 debut fifth at the nearby Clairefontaine venue with a breakthrough score in a seven-furlong maiden at this Normandy track in her penultimate start. Settled off a solid pace in sixth as Listed Criterium de l'Ouest winner Ataared (Ire) (Muhaarar {GB}) set the tone, she was last to come off the bridle in the straight and quickened in impressive fashion once finding an unrestricted path approaching the final furlong to earn a career high in style. At the line, she was 1 1/4 lengths too good for the running-on Queen Trezy (Fr) (Almanzor {Fr}) with the hitherto undefeated Batz (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}) a half length further adrift in third. Godolphin's 'TDN Rising Star' Life In Motion (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) threatened briefly in the straight and was not unduly punished once her chance had slipped away, finishing sixth in the heavy ground.

“We have always held this filly in high esteem and her last two wins were very good,” said trainer Stephane Wattel. “I felt that she was going into the race in splendid form and we were anxious to see her confirm our opinion. We could feel some pressure, but we were really confident. The plan was to get her to relax on that [heavy] ground as it is essential to produce her turn of foot and [jockey] Theo [Bachelot] did that perfectly well. Once she was clear she settled the issue in a few strides and that is what we hoped to see. The dream is alive for next year.”

Rosacea is the latest of three foals and lone scorer produced by a winning half-sister to GI E.P. Taylor S. heroine Reggane (GB) (Red Ransom). The February-foaled homebred bay's second dam Reine Zao (Fr) (Alzao), who ran third in the G3 Prix de Psyche, is a daughter of G1 Prix de Diane third and GI Gamely H. fourth Raintree Renegade (Green Forest).

Deauville Trade Concludes With V2

Four days of selling in Deauville wrapped up on Tuesday with the single-session v2 Yearling Sale, back from a pandemic-necessitated hiatus in 2020. From 129 offered, 96 yearlings were sold at a clearance rate of 74.4%; it was 79% in 2019. With 14 fewer sold, the aggregate dipped 28.6% to €2,912,500. The average was down 18.2% to €30,339, while the median dropped 20.9% to €24,500.

Nicolas de Watrigant of Mandore International Agency signed for the joint top lots at €140,000, a filly by Toronado (Ire) and a colt by Mehmas (Ire). The former, lot 379, is out of the Desert Style (Ire) mare Ivory Style (GB), whose four foals of racing age include the Listed Prix de la Vallee d'Auge second Ivory Choice (Fr) (Choisir {Aus}) and the G3 Prix d'Arenberg third Over Reacted (Fr) (Planteur {Ire}). De Watrigant secured her on behalf of owner Pierre Pilarski and trainer Didier Guillemin.

“We really wanted her,” said de Watrigant. “She's a lovely filly, very Toronado. Pierre Pilarski and Didier Guillemin saw her this morning and liked her a lot. She was worth fighting for.”

De Watrigant later in the day went to the same price for a Mehmas colt who is the second foal out of the three-time winner Al Shahaniya (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) (lot 470). Champion 2-year-old filly and G1 Cheveley Park S. winner Tiggy Wiggy (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) appears under the third dam of the colt, who was purchased in conjunction with trainer Stephane Wattel. De Watrigant and Wattel also combined for a Kodiac (GB) filly out of the winning Shoot (Fr) (Lawman {Fr}) (lot 438) for €70,000.

The Mehmas colt and Toronado filly were the only six-figure lots of the v2 sale.

Mehmas, who continues to deliver the goods with his first 3-year-olds this season, was also responsible for the third-highest price of the session, a colt out of the five-times placed Jarada (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) (lot 382) who was picked up by Paul Nataf for €77,000. The prolific champion Dylan Thomas (Ire) and his Group 1-winning sisters Queen's Logic (Ire) (Grand Lodge) and Homecoming Queen (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}), as well as G1 Derby winner Serpentine (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and G1 Moyglare Stud S. victress Shale (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), appear under the third dam. Nataf, who was the sale's leading buyer with nine purchased for €326,000, signed for another of the top prices, an Anodin half-brother to Listed Prix Zeddaan winner Abama (GB) (Alhebayeb {GB}) (lot 377), for €73,000.

The ever-reliable Holy Roman Emperor provided the sale's second-highest priced filly, a February-foaled daughter of the winning Little Sister (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}) (lot 392) for €75,000. She was bought by Marco Bozzi Bloodstock.

Following the sale, Arqana President Eric Hoyeau and Executive Director Freddy Powell commented: “After a gap year, the v.2 made a cautious return today. All the indicators were down, partly due to a general lack of buyers in this category of horses, particularly the pinhookers who are usually present on this day. Nevertheless, the profiles that ticked all the boxes sold well and the top prices are in line with those of previous editions.”

Siyouni’s Who Knows Makes All in the Francois Boutin

Stephane Wattel trainee Who Knows (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) went postward for Sunday's G3 Circus Maximus Prix Francois Boutin at Deauville coming back off a fourth in Chantilly's July 18 G2 Prix Robert Papin and led her rivals a merry dance throughout to earn her black-type stripes at the second attempt. She had graduated at Chantilly in a June 25 six-furlong maiden, having opened up wuth a May 27 debut fourth at Lyon-Parilly, and was quickly into stride to seize an immediate advantage in this seven-furlong test. Shaken up in front with 300 metres remaining, the 39-5 chance came under sterner urging thereafter and was ridden out inside the final furlong to hold the late thrust of Oneforthegutter (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}) by a head for a career high.

“I knew she was doing very well at home, but it was a bit of a gamble in taking on the colts here,” admitted winning trainer Stephane Wattel. “I therefore felt some pressure on my shoulders, but the result was there and I'm absolutely thrilled to win this for all the partners. I'm particularly delighted for part-breeder Gerard Larrieu, who was a long-time assistant to Francois Boutin and this race honours that great trainer who is very dear to his heart. The plan was to let her do her own thing and, with nobody willing to take the lead, she found herself in front. She was challenged at the end, but has the quality to be a great fighter. We will see how she comes out of the race before making any decisions, but I don't think she will stay more than seven furlongs so I'm not thinking about the [G1] Prix Marcel Boussac at this stage.”

Who Knows is the latest of six foals and one of four scorers produced by Listed Lingfield Oaks Trial victrix and G3 Bahrain Trophy third Zain Al Boldan (GB) (Poliglote {GB}), herself a half-sister to G3 Prix Edmond Blanc-winning sire Svedov (Fr) (Exit to Nowhere). The March-foaled bay is a half-sister to G2 German 2000 Guineas hero Poetic Dream (Ire) (Poet's Voice {GB}) and a yearling filly by Almanzor (Fr). Her second dam, Listed Prix des Lilas and Listed Prix Ceres victrix Carla (Fr) (Cardoun {Fr}), is a half-sister to another G3 Prix Edmond Blanc winner in Golani (Ire) (Nikos {GB}) and to the dam of G2 Prix de Malleret victrix Never Forget (Fr) (Westerner {GB}).

Freshman Sire Ultra Off The Mark at Dieppe

Haras du Logis-based sire Ultra (Ire) (Manduro {Ger}) became the latest European freshman off the mark when Stephane Wattel trainee Bremontier (Fr) notched a debut win in Monday's Prix City Light, a seven-furlong newcomers' test, at Dieppe.

2nd-Dieppe, €27,000, Mdn, 7-26, unraced 2yo, c/g, 7fT, 1:24.20, sf.
BREMONTIER (FR) (c, 2, Ultra {Ire}–Brocottes {Fr} {G1SP-Fr, $154,732}, by Lando {Ger}) raced a shade keenly through the early strides and found a comfortable slot behind the leaders in fourth for the most part. Taking closer order in the straight, the 18-5 second choice was shaken up with 350 metres remaining kept on strongly once edging ahead of Antharis (GB) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) inside the furlong marker to withstand that rival's late rally by a half length, becoming the first winner for his freshman sire (by Manduro {Ger}). Half to a weanling filly by Wootton Bassett (GB), he is the fifth of six foals and second scorer out of G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud runner-up Brocottes (Fr) (Lando {Ger}), herself a half-sister to the stakes-placed duo Allez Henri (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}) and Cotes d'Armor (Fr) (Numerous). Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, €13,500. Video, sponsored by TVG.
