Breeders’ Spotlight: ‘Just’ Like the Movies, Krikorian Gets a Breeders’ Cup Champ

It seems like almost too good of a plot line to believe it now, but Just F Y I (Justify) was never meant to race in George Krikorian's silks.

The filly made it all the way to the Keeneland sales grounds before a puncture wound in her shoulder kept her from going through the ring. While it was nothing serious, the minor abrasion became inflamed enough to make walking back and forth for buyers impossible. So she was scratched from the September Sale, sent to Margaux Farm and eventually joined Bill Mott's stable. Not long after, she became Krikorian's first Breeders' Cup champion.

“It's funny how things happen because we would have sold her,” reflected Donato Lanni, Krikorian's longtime advisor who was the one that had made the call to Krikorian about withdrawing the filly from the sale. “Somehow when you do good things in life and you're a good person, the Man Upstairs decides that he's going to take care of you. I really believe things like that happen for a reason.”

Lanni couldn't be more genuine in his praise for Krikorian, the California-based movie theater mogul who famously gave Lanni the opportunity to buy his first horse. As the story goes, Krikorian told a 20-something-aged Lanni that if he ever saw a yearling that he liked, to go ahead and buy it. In the summer of 1999 while Krikorian was busy scouting out properties for a new theater project in Arizona, Lanni somewhat nervously spent $35,000 on a Dynaformer yearling. Named Starrer, the filly eventually became the first of many Grade I winners for both Krikorian as an owner and Lanni as an agent.

While Lanni has since developed a stellar career working with a number of the top horsemen and owners in the game, he has maintained a steady relationship advising his good friend–the soft-spoken Vietnam veteran with a knack for business who had launched his start in the sport.

“George is the kind of guy that is very low-key,” Lanni explained. “He has that Shawn Connery way about him. He's charming and everyone that meets him says he's a gentleman and a great guy. His whole operation is pretty cool.”

Krikorian, who developed a passion for racing while growing up near Rockingham Park where his father George Krikorian Sr. was a trainer, has spent the past three decades building up a prosperous racing and breeding operation with an emphasis on establishing and advancing each family in his commercial program.

As a perfect example of his success in achieving just that, Starrer was among the top performers of Krikorian's racing stable for many years as a dual Grade I-winning millionaire, but she would eventually be surpassed in earnings by her own granddaughter Just F Y I.

A Breeders' Cup win had alluded Krikorian for many years, but to make it to the winner's circle with a homebred in the Juvenile Fillies –and at his home track at Santa Anita with his children and grandchildren celebrating alongside him–made the wait all worthwhile.

“It was exciting just being there the whole week before the Breeders' Cup and going through the whole process,” Krikorian recalled. “The whole experience of going back and forth with the horse to the track every morning, watching her get ready and watching the other horses, she was just showing herself more and more. I knew the day that she ran that she was going to run a hell of a race. I didn't know if she would win or not, but I knew she was going to run her best race.”

Wrapping up her juvenile season undefeated, Just F Y I secured her spot as the best 2-year-old filly in the country after overcoming the widest post to come out victorious in the Juvenile Fillies. Since then, the talented bay has enjoyed a bit of time off in Florida alongside fellow Krikorian stable star War Like Goddess (English Channel), the three-time Grade I winner who is set to return to the racetrack for her 7-year-old season this spring.

To go into 2024 with the most accomplished 3-year-old filly is exciting, but Krikorian acknowledges that there are plenty of others vying for the top spot.

“It feels great, but there is going to be more competition coming,” he said. “The competition gets a little bit tougher this year, but she is also growing. She was going through a growth spurt before the Breeders' Cup and she went through a growth spurt again when she got turned out. She's going to be a much bigger, stronger horse this year. Both she and War Like Goddess are back galloping and we're getting ready for the spring. In a few weeks we will probably start putting together schedules.”

When he's not in sunny California or traveling the country for the next horse race, Krikorian has found himself spending more time in Kentucky. He recently opened a one-of-a-kind entertainment complex across from Rupp Arena in downtown Lexington called LexLive.

“I can't help myself,” the entrepreneur admitted. “If I'm driving and I see a location that I think may be a good location for a theater, I go for it. So downtown Lexington had no theaters and I thought it would make sense to put something there.”

Opened for business in 2021, LexLive is home to 10 movie theaters, a bowling alley, multiple restaurants and bars and an arcade.

But the main draw for Krikorian's trips to Lexington is to visit his farm outside of Versailles. Named Starwood Farm in honor of Starrer and fellow foundation mare Hollywood Story (Wild Rush), the 350-acre property Krikorian purchased 15 years ago is home to around 40 broodmares and their offspring.

Krikorian is known for the effort he puts into the clever, oftentimes cinema-related names of his racehorses, but he has just as much pride for the work he puts into planning his matings every spring.

Lanni gives Krikorian all the credit for successful matings like the one that produced Just F Y I, but he does wryly point out that Krikorian has a tendency to match his mare to the perfect stallion even if it might be to the detriment of the farm's bottom line in the short term when it comes time to send the yearlings to the sales in the fall.

“It's a commercial operation, but sometimes he likes to breed to stallions that are not the most commercial at the time because it's the right thing to do for the mare,” Lanni explained. “So when we go to sell them, they don't bring the money because they're not by a first-year stallion. He wants to breed to the best. I'll tell George, 'This mare is 15 years old and she hasn't had a runner. I think spending this amount of money is too much.' But he doesn't look at the price of the stallion. He just wants to breed what is best for the mare.”

He might stray away from the commercial norm, but at the end of the day Krikorian knows when to make the right business decision in order to keep the farm's overhead in check and oftentimes that means parting with a horse that he is confident has all the potential to become a star.

The one that still makes him wince just a bit is Honor A. P. (Honor Code). The son of his Grade I-winning star mare Hollywood Story, Honor A.P. went through the sales ring as a yearling and fetched $850,000 from CRK Stable before he developed into a Grade I winner and eventual Lane's End sire.

“Honor A.P. stood out from day one from when he was born and it was painful to sell the horse, but I had to,” Krikorian reflected. “The poor horse ran in the Derby, but he never got a chance to really run his race. Coming out of the gate, he gets hit and knocked out but still ends up finishing fourth. Had he been able to run his race, who knows what would've happened?”

Another recent success in the sales ring for Krikorian's program was the $1.1 million sale of Mucho Unusual (Mucho Macho Man). The homebred claimed four graded stakes including the 2020 GI Rodeo Drive S. before selling to Shadai Farm when she retired from the track in 2022.

Now Krikorian is looking to make another shrewd move for his program as he sends a high-caliber mare to the Keeneland January Sale. Starrer's stakes-placed daughter Star Act (Street Cry {Ire}), the dam of Just F Y I, already has two other winners that sold for six figures as yearlings on her produce record and she is carrying a foal by Life Is Good.

“She's gorgeous,” Krikorian gushed of the winning 13-year-old mare. “She was a beautiful racehorse to look at. Unfortunately she had an injury that shortened her career as a racehorse, but she has made up for it as a broodmare. Her foals are large and very strong-boned with big shoulders and big hips. They're just what you want in a racehorse.”

Star Act's newly-turned yearling, a full sister to Just F Y I, was originally slated for the January sale as well, but Krikorian opted to focus on selling the mare in January and perhaps send the yearling to Keeneland come September. He admitted that she reminded him too much of her older sister to part with just yet.

“Just F Y I ruled the roost here,” he said with a smile. “She really stood out physically and she pushed everybody around. She was running the show and now this foal here is doing the same thing.”

Krikorian's Starwood Farm has suffered several sad losses in recent years as Starrer passed away in 2021 and Hollywood Story died the following summer. With the passing of the farm's two matriarch mares, there is space in the program for other talented race mares to take on the role of leading producer someday–be it Just F Y I, or perhaps Big Pond–a daughter of Krikorian's stallion Mr. Big who recently ran second in the GI La Brea S., or maybe one of his rare sales purchases like War Like Goddess.

Bought as a 2-year-old by Lanni for a mere $30,000, the future multi-millionaire marked a full-circle find for Krikorian and Lanni, taking them back to their early days of shopping for bargain buys together back before Krikorian raced almost exclusively from his own breeding program.

“When I had first met Donato, he had just moved to Kentucky and was starting out,” Krikorian recalled. “He was sleeping in his car, looking to get a job. I liked him because he was really energetic and you could tell how much he loved the horses. Starrer was the first horse he picked. He was starting his career and I was starting a new venture, so it worked out well. He had an eye for a horse and he didn't know he had an eye for a horse.”

Krikorian, too, has more of an eye for a horse than he will readily give himself credit for.

Only a few years after the purchase of Starrer, Krikorian and Lanni were shopping for yearlings when Lanni pointed out Hollywood Story. Krikorian took one look and knew he had to have her. He was worried she might sell for too much, but the bidding stalled at $130,000 and he took home a future Grade I winner.

It was a similar story with Mr. Big (Dynafomer). Krikorian rarely buys weanling, but when Lanni mentioned the colt at the Keeneland November Sale in 2003 and Krikorian went to see him, he couldn't resist going to $220,000 for the youngster. While injuries kept Mr. Big from reaching his full potential on the racetrack, Krikorian bred a few mares to him on a whim when the new retiree was letting down at Starwood and was thrilled when the stallion's first starter won on debut by almost 10 lengths.

Now standing at Legacy Ranch, Mr. Big is ranked among the top five leading sires in California and Krikorian supports him with a dozen mares every spring.

So when it comes to judging horseflesh, Krikorian's opinion is one to take seriously. And while the septuagenarian doesn't have any specific goals as he continues to develop his program, his drive for finding the winner's circle is evident.

“I just keep looking for those nuggets,” he said. “But everything has worked out well. It seems like every couple of years, we've been fortunate to have something good happen and that keeps you rolling along.”

Krikorian is understated in reflecting on his many achievements in the sport, but Lanni is clear that Krikorian is deserving of everything he has attained and more.

“He's self-made and he did it the hard way,” Lanni said. “I'm lucky that I've known him since 1997 and so to me he's like a father figure. I work for him, but he's more like a father figure than anything else. He takes care of a lot of people and he's very generous, so he's an easy guy to cheer for.”

‘Just’ on Fire: Just F Y I Rolls in Sloppy Frizette for Red-Hot Justify

Just F Y I (f, 2, Justify–Star Act, by Street Cry {Ire}), up in time by a head sprinting on debut at a well-backed 7-2 at the Spa Aug. 26, provided a rolling Grade I double for owner George Krikorian and Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott with a powerful performance in Saturday's 'Win and You're In' GI Frizette S. at a rainy Aqueduct Racetrack.

“[The track] was the big question and we didn't know,” Mott said after saddling his first Frizette winner since Confessional in 1998. “You don't know until you run them. We thought she was a nice filly and, in this day and age, I guess if you break your maiden impressively you're looking at going to a stakes race because there aren't many allowance races.”

As for a start in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita, Mott added, “That would be the plan today. We'll wait and see how she comes back and go from there.”

The 9-2 chance found a perfect spot in an outside third through an opening quarter in :23.63 while navigating the one-turn mile over very sloppy going. The Krikorian homebred loomed boldly while four wide on the far turn, gained a narrow advantage at the top of the stretch and leveled off beautifully down the lane to win going away by 3 3/4 lengths over longshot Central Avenue (Street Sense). Life Talk (Gun Runner) was third. Favored Emery (More Than Ready), a runaway winner on debut in the Saratoga mud Aug. 30, was a disappointing fourth.

Krikorian and Mott were also represented one race earlier on the card by GI Joe Hirsch Turf Classic S. winner War Like Goddess (English Channel).

“It's very special,” Mott said. “[Mr. Krikorian] has been a very good client and he sends me some horses that he thinks are going to be OK. I have a small group of horses for him, but they are all quite nice.”

Krikorian added, “It's very special. I couldn't be more pleased, I'm ecstatic.”

‘Every Sale, I Fall in Love With Horses Again’

The tone was so casual that Donato Lanni couldn't be sure quite how earnest the words had been. If he saw something interesting at a yearling sale, he was to let George Krikorian know. Still in his 20s, Lanni had first connected with the movie theater magnate when cold calling on behalf of John T.L. Jones Jr. after a Corwyn Bay (Ire) filly won a maiden in his silks. Might Krikorian breed the dam back to the Walmac stallion? He did just that and, when he came to visit the Bluegrass, the pair hit it off straightaway.

But nobody had ever asked Lanni to buy a horse before. And here he was, gazing at a Dynaformer yearling at Fasig-Tipton's Fall Sale in 1999. He'd seen her at Keeneland the previous month, unsold at $47,000: he liked her then, and liked her now. But in those days, with no clients, he was too embarrassed even to fill out a card. He'd just watch from a polite distance as others had different horses pulled out and walked.

“You wait for that opportunity in life where someone asks you to do something, and you want to grab the bull by the horns,” Lanni remembers. “You've rehearsed it in your mind, you're ready. But George said it in such a nonchalant way, I wasn't sure if he was serious or not.”

Only one thing for it: call the man and check.

“Hey, I found this filly.”
“I'm busy,” Krikorian replied. “Just buy her.”

And hung up.

“What does that mean!?” Lanni asked himself. “What if she brings a lot of money? I don't really know this guy. And you hear all these stories of people reneging…”

He needn't have worried about Krikorian, of course; but the way things have turned out, Krikorian was himself in the safest of hands. Barely thinking about it, he had just launched one of the most inspired horsemen of his generation on a brilliant career.

“We got lucky,” Lanni says with a shrug. “I mean, I had no idea she was going to be a star.”

But everything that has happened since suggests that an awful lot of judgement compounded the luck admittedly needed with any horse. Imagine having this one shot-very likely your only shot, if things didn't work out-and spending just $35,000 for what turned out to be dual Grade I-winning millionaire Starrer. You wouldn't believe it, if you saw it in one of Krikorian's cinemas. But only a couple of summers later Lanni found him the aptly named Hollywood Story (Wild Rush), as it happens out of a Dynaformer mare, and she too won a couple of Grade Is on her way to banking seven figures. She has meanwhile earned new celebrity as dam of Honor A.P. Honor Code).

Typically, however, for Lanni himself the tale is all about the client.

“He's a great story: self-made, Vietnam vet, started from scratch, an amazing personality,” he says. “Those two mares became the foundation of his farm, and he loves the breeding side now. But it was great for me, that he trusted me.

“Because I do think that for anything you do in life, you surround yourself with genuine people. Good things happen when you have good people around you, as long as you just stay patient and focused. I think those are the two really important thing: good people, and then just staying on course. 'Stay in the buggy.' That was always Johnny Jones's go-to, and that resonated with me.”

Since then, Lanni has found a litany of champions-many for his great friend and collaborator, Bob Baffert, from Arrogate to Authentic; but also plenty for other barns, lately including Canadian champion Moira (Ghostzapper) and a fresh name on the Derby trail in Rocket Can (Into Mischief). So, okay, he can sign big dockets nowadays. As we'll see, however, he still loves dredging the second week of the September Sale; and still turns up bargains anyone could have had. Competitors don't talk of Lanni with envy. They talk with immense respect; almost as though he were some kind of savant, deploying intuitions that can't be learned or articulated. But that won't stop us asking him how they evolved.

The exteriors are familiar: dashing Italian looks, flashbulb smile. But the mindset? Well, it was shaped by “a very strict, old school” upbringing by first-generation immigrants from Campobasso, near Rome, to Montreal. He's grateful for that, believing that young people today miss out on proper communication, proper relationships even, by constant immersion in screens.

Lanni's father worked in construction and occasionally claimed a Standardbred at the old Blue Bonnets Raceway.

“So my story is no different from most people in the horse business,” he says. “Someone took you to the track and, without you really knowing it, something inside you lit or didn't light. And I started handicapping and reading the Form and studying the pedigrees. And at a very young age, maybe 10 or 11, I got a groom license.”

That was for summer work but Lanni was not much older when effectively becoming an assistant trainer, coming to the backside before school and sneaking back for qualifying sessions. Looking back, he realizes how much he owes Standardbred mentors like Andre LaChance, who taught him about soundness, legs, how to keep a horse healthy and thriving.

But then came the revelation of Thoroughbreds, with their wider horizons. He remembers watching a Kentucky Derby and announcing to his mother that someday he would be there too. If the Bluegrass was where the best horses were, and the best horsemen, then that was where he would go.

He obliged his parents by first going to business school, his dad having driven home the principles of his upbringing with a couple of years in his own trade after high school. Lanni worked in the trenches, pouring cement in the cold, and it soon dawned on him that if it was tough at 19 or 20, would he want to be doing the same at 60? As soon as he had sat his last exam, he came home and packed his beaten-up old Volkswagen.

“Where you going?”
“Well, mom, remember when I told you I was going to go to Kentucky?”
“What are you talking about?”
“I told you. Kentucky. I'm leaving.”
“When?”
“Now.”
Here was dad. “Where's he going?”
“Kentucky!”
“Where!? Why? How long? When's he coming back?”
“He's not!”

Thinking back, Lanni smiles wryly.

“I knew I couldn't say anything before, because of the drama, my Italian mother crying and screaming,” he says. “So it was like peeling off a band-aid. I drove down, it was late May, I went through Keeneland and was just in awe. It's like some kids went to Europe 'to find themselves'. I never understood what that meant, 'find myself'. But I was determined to figure out if I was going to make it or not, how to incorporate the passion I had.”

Luckily, without his knowing, a buddy had thrown a tent into his car. Lanni drove round the Horse Park and was delighted to find a campsite. It was a fun summer, and every time they're in the neighborhood he drives through and tells his kids, “This is where I started.”

Actually, his first job restored him to his roots, managing Standardbred yearlings for John Cashman at Castleton Farm. But he had his heart set on Thoroughbreds and Cashman told him to knock the door of Johnny Jones at Walmac: “Just show up and do your thing.”

So he told Jones he would work for nothing, implored him just to give him a phone, a Rolodex, and let him sell some seasons. Jones, suitably impressed, even paid him. And one of the calls he made, as we've seen, was to Krikorian.

When Jones retired, Lanni was hired by his compatriot John Sikura at Hill 'n' Dale.

“With Johnny Jones and John Sikura, you're talking about two very different people with quite a lot in common,” he reflects. “Both started with nothing and built an empire. Both great horsemen, with tremendous business instincts. Very determined. And just positive people who worked hard every day. It was great, because you came to work and just kept learning every day. I was so lucky to work for two of the most dynamic people in the business for 25 years, before I met Bob and went on my own.”

With Baffert, Lanni discovered an immediate personal rapport. But that, plainly, wouldn't be enough on its own. They were also on the same wavelength when it came to horseflesh.

“Well, the trust grew and the relationship grew,” Lanni says. “He is my sounding board. Really Bob took me and pretty much molded me, taught me how to look at horses. I mean, his record speaks for itself. He's a genius, a survivor, an amazing horseman. Just loves his horses. He's Cool Hand Luke, he keeps everything cool and it's a treat to watch him with each horse in the morning. And his work ethic is unbelievable. But as hard as he works, he's taught me that if it's not fun, then you shouldn't be doing it. Because if you're not having fun, you'd go crazy, it'd eat you up.”

But even when you can shop Book 1, there's that elusive element that prevents it being a straightforward equation from sale-topper to Derby winner. Beside the obvious physique, and the obvious pedigree, you have to seek something less tangible: that will to win. Can you read the competitive instinct in a horse that has never had a saddle on its back?

“I think it would sound strange to say that anybody can do that,” Lanni replies. “Bob always says just to use your instinct. 'What's your gut say?' And I think there's that gut factor in anything, in any business. You've got to believe in yourself, trust yourself. And most of the time you'll be wrong, but every once in a while you will land on an Arrogate. Is it skill? I think it's more luck than skill, absolutely. But if you're around them long enough, no matter if it's Standardbred or Thoroughbred, you start understanding horses. They are unbelievable creatures: they've been around a long time, and they've survived, right?

“I enjoy finding that needle in a haystack. That's why I love shopping in Book 6. That, to me, is more gratifying because everybody likes an underdog. You just got to go and turn every rock over. And that has been my thing in life. Never assume. Verify.”

The bottom reaches of the market, where Lanni started out, were also where he first found Baffert. The last session, to the last horse. That's the ethic Lanni admires: something he feels you don't see so much, today.

He thanks his parents for that, the days he was pouring concrete. That's why he feels so much respect for the backside community: the trainers, vets, blacksmiths, grooms. “That life is not for the weak,” he stresses. “My job is not even in the same breath.”

That said, the mission does feel tougher every year. He emphasizes his respect for talented rivals, while nowadays potent partnerships all seem to be targeting the same animals. But that's why nothing is more fulfilling than the ugly ducklings, the ones that take a bit of imagination. And very few horses have given Lanni more satisfaction than War Like Goddess, the English Channel filly he bought at OBS June for $30,000. She'd made $1,200 as a weanling, and was unsold at $1,000 as a yearling. To find her for Krikorian, above all, brought things full circle: another filly who won two Grade Is, for Bill Mott, earning almost $2 million.

“I hadn't bought George a horse in a long time,” he explains. “We'd quit buying because his breeding program had got so big. But this filly is what's so great about this business. People say it's the Sport of Kings, that only the wealthy can participate. Well, there's a filly that didn't bring one bid as a yearling. Anybody could have had her. I probably saw her, and obviously I didn't buy her. So anybody can play the game.”

In the event, Lanni figured she was the last kind of horse to shine in an under-tack show.

“Bred to go a mile and a half on the grass, and people want her to go an eighth in :10 flat!” he exclaims. “She just needed time and there weren't many people that would give a horse a year off, like George would. And actually she worked really well, :10.2. I knew George was the only person that would do what she needed. And now he's been rewarded.”

Once again, Lanni forces the narrative away from his own contribution. And that's authentic. You can always tell false modesty, and here's a man transparently averse taking himself too seriously.

“It makes me uncomfortable talking about myself, and success I've had,” he says. “It takes a good horse, a great team effort, and a bit of luck for everything to work out at the end of the day. It all started with a love for the horse. I never imagined I would be where I am today. I have always put the horses and their needs first, and I fall in love with them over and over again, at every sale.”

Lanni's wife is a doctor and her daily experiences help him keep our essentially trivial business in due perspective. Instead he reiterates gratitude for his own fortune and urges the next generation to persevere towards their own.

“I want young people to know that you can do anything you want in this business, in any business,” he says. “You just have to stay positive, stay focused. Stay in that buggy! And eventually an opportunity will present itself, and you will know it's time to take that chance and make the best of it. You just put one brick on top of another and slowly chip away, chip away, and eventually you'll get to where you want to be. Find what you're good at, stay with it.

“I'm only here today because of the people that trust me to do what I do. And I just try to stay quiet and humble along the way and hope that we continue to win races.”

He won't be able to avoid the limelight if Hopper (Declaration Of War) can win the Big 'Cap on Saturday, only his third start since breaking his maiden. This was a $90,000 gem deep in the September Sale: further confirmation, then, that it's not just the funding nowadays available to Lanni that sets him apart. But exactly that, he insists, is what gives everyone a chance-and what makes our industry so captivating.

“Because it's all a mystery,” he says. “And that's why it's fun to get up every morning. You never know what's going to happen. And to think that I get to do this every day for a living. When I go back home for Christmas every year, I remind myself how lucky I am. Noone's cracked it. I mean that. If I told you that I think I know what I'm doing, I don't. I've just gotten lucky. I've gotten really lucky, because of the people you meet.”
