First-Year Honest Mischief Heads Sequel New York’s 2021 Stallion Roster

Sequel Stallions New York announces its 2021 stud fees, led by New York's first son of 2020 leading sire Into Mischief, Honest Mischief who will stand for $6,500 LFSN.

The freaky-fast bay is new for the 2021 season and will be backed by a syndicate led by Sequel, with global powerhouse Juddmonte Farms in support.

New York's perennial leading sire Freud will stand for $5,000. Freud, New York's leading sire by number of black type winners, turf, and AEI is the versatile full brother to Giant's Causeway. He has lifetime progeny earnings over $65 million dollars aptly earning his nom de course as the “King Of New York.”

“It is a very tough climate in the sales market anywhere now, but especially in the regional markets. We want to give our breeders a chance to be profitable,” said Sequel's Becky Thomas. “The recent sales in Kentucky have clearly demonstrated breeding in Kentucky does not guarantee a profit. The lower stallion fees, no transportation or boarding costs coupled with the lucrative purse structure NYRA offers and resulting awards will give our breeders the opportunity to recover from the dismal 2020 season.”

Unbridled's Song's Grade 1-performing millionaire, Mission Impazible has led every crop he has had of racing age with progeny earnings over $9 million dollars with just five crops of racing age and 45 percent winners. Twin Creeks Farm and Sequel continue to provide support secondary to his progeny success on the racetrack.

Multiple stakes winner Union Jackson is the first son of two-time Horse of the Year Curlin to stand in New York. He is out of Hot Dixie Chick, a Grade 1-winning half-sister to Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming. Standing in New York for a partnership between Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings and Sequel New York, his gorgeous first crop are looking to be very fast 2-year-olds of 2021.

Track record-setting, multiple graded stakes winner, Destin, a full brother to Grade 1 sire Creative Cause, was nosed in the Belmont Stakes. He is owned by a syndicate and is supported by Gainesway Farm, Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Twin Creeks Farm as well as Sequel New York.

Due to covid restrictions, it is unlikely there will be a stallion showcase this year. Virtual inspections for all the stallions will be available in the near future.

St. Elias Stables Offers Discount On Stallion Army Mule To New Jersey Breeders

St. Elias Stables is offering members of the Thoroughbred Breeders Association of New Jersey an incentive to breed to Army Mule, who is standing the 2021 breeding season at Hill 'n' Dale at Xalapa Farm in Kentucky for $7,500.

A TBANJ member who is interested in breeding to Army Mule and foaling in New Jersey will receive the stud fee for $5,000 and all shipping expenses will be paid for the round trip to Kentucky.

Interested parties should contact the TBANJ office for more information.

Army Mule, a 6-year-old son of Friesan Fire, went unbeaten in three career starts, highlighted by a victory in the Grade 1 Carter Handicap. His first foals are weanlings of 2020.

Army Mule is out of the stakes-winning Crafty Prospector mare Crafty Toast, whose runners also include stakes-placed Platinum Steel and Special Ruth. His second dam is Grade 2 winner Give a Toast, his third dam is Grade 2 winner Salud, and his extended family includes multiple Grade 1 winner Our Native.

Grade 2 Winner Air Strike To Stand At Ohio’s Duncan Farms In 2021

Grade 2 winner Air Strike (Street Sense-Omnitap by Tapit) has been acquired by Daryl and Sally Duncan and will enter stud at their Duncan Farms in Warsaw, Ohio in 2021.

Raced in partnership by Sol Kumin's Madaket Stables, Slam Dunk Racing and Michael Nentwig, Air Strike won the Grade 2 Triple Bend at Santa Anita (seven furlongs on the dirt), defeating the likes of multiple-graded stakes winners Cistron and American Anthem. He also twice finished fourth in the G1 Bing Crosby at Del Mar and the G1 Forego at Saratoga; the latter behind champion Mitole. He retired with career earnings of $338,810.

“We were looking to add a true dirt-sprint pedigree with some depth on the dam side, and we found it in Air Strike,” said Daryl Duncan.

That depth comes from his first dam, Omnitap by Tapit, who is a half-sister to three black type performers including multiple stakes winner Classify (by Unbridled's Song), stakes winner and multiple stakes placed Simplify (by Pulpit), and Grade 2-placed Seeker (by Hard Spun). Those stakes performers are all out of Air Strike's second dam, Classic Olympio (by Olympio), who won four stakes races and was multiple graded stakes-placed, all in dirt sprints.

Air Strike joins Duncan Farms' other graded stakes-winning stallions, Corfu (Grade 2 winner by Malibu Moon), and Fort Larned (three-time Grade 1 winner, Breeders' Cup Classic winner, and earner of over $4 million). He will stand his first season for $2,000 Live Foal.

Calumet Farm’s 2021 Stallion Roster Features Newcomer Bravazo

Calumet Farm in Lexington, Ky., has released the advertised fees for its 2021 stallion roster, including newcomer Bravazo.

Bravazo, a son of leading sire Awesome Again, will stand for $6,000 LFSN with discounts given for multiple mare packages and quality mares. A homebred runner for Calumet Farm, the D. Wayne Lukas trainee was an honest racehorse who danced every dance.

Bravazo accumulated over $2 million in career earnings. At two, he was second in the Grade 1 Claiborne Breeders' Futurity Stakes. Early in his 3-year-old season he won the G2 Risen Star Stakes, which propelled him into the Triple Crown, where he finished a close second in the Preakness Stakes, only beaten a half-length by Justify, the eventual Triple Crown Winner and Horse of the Year.

Bravazo continued his 3-year-old summer campaign with a second-place finish in the G1 Betfair.com Haskell Invitational Stakes followed by a third in the G1 Runhappy Travers Stakes. Bravazo went on to run for a third place finish in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile and a second in the G1 Clark Handicap.

“Bravazo was an iron horse on the track,” said Calumet Farm's Eddie Kane. “He was a fierce competitor with great resolve and determination. I'm confident he will establish this toughness in his progeny.”

Bravazo joins the Calumet roster headlined by perennial leading turf sire English Channel, a six time Grade 1 winner and Breeders' Cup Turf champion.

English Channel continues to experience great success as a sire with proven runners on both the turf and dirt. In 2020, English Channel is the #1 turf sire by earnings with eight individual black type winners, five graded stakes winners and one Grade 1 winner in Channel Maker.

Ransom the Moon, the only Grade 1-winning sprinting son of Malibu Moon to go to stud, offers breeders with a dirt-speed option on an incredible sire line and is off to a strong stud career having covered 162 mares in his first two years at stud.

After breeding 298 and 221 mares through their first three years at stud respectively, G1 Travers Stakes winner Keen Ice (Curlin) and Brazilian Triple Crown winner Bal a Bali (Put It Back) will have first-crop 2-year-olds in 2021.

Oxbow continues to show great potential, with his biggest and best crops yet to come. He has bred bigger and better crops each year at stud, with next year's 3-year-old crop coming from 153 bred and his following crop coming from 187 bred. Hot Rod Charlie, a 2-year-old son of Oxbow, most recently finished second in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile.

“Our roster features a wide variety of bloodlines possessing soundness, quality conformation, and a propensity to winning classic two-turn races on both dirt and turf,” said Calumet's Bryna Reeves. “We are focused not only on building long-term relationships with breeders but also sharing in the commercial and racing success of our stallions. I am certain we will have something to fit the needs of almost any breeder.”
