First Foal Is A Colt For Indiana Stallion Shagaf

The first foal by Grade 3 Gotham Stakes winner Shagaf (Bernardini) is a colt out of Rain On Sunday.

Shagaf, owned by Shadwell Farms, is standing his second season at Indiana Stallion Station in Anderson, Ind.

Rain On Sunday (Eddington – Equal Reign, by Equality) is a maiden mare owned by Kenneth Elliot.

“The filly is nicely put together and has quite the personality,” said Joyce Baker, owner of Indiana Stallion Station, which stands five stallions participating in the lucrative Indiana Thoroughbred Breed Development Program. “We're excited for her breeder and look forward to her future.”

Indiana-sired horses will be running for more than $3.65 million in purses in 40 total stakes at Indiana Grand Racing and Casino in Shelbyville in 2021 alone. Throughout the 120-day race meet at the track, overnights, including Indiana-sired and Indiana-bred races will see a purse total of more than $9.3 million.

Shagaf stands at Indiana Stallion Station at a fee of $2,500.

“We are grateful to Shadwell Farm for allowing us the chance to stand their regal stallion,” said Baker. “We're looking forward to seeing more of his offspring this season and soon on the track.”

Revved Up Retired To River Oaks Farms In Oklahoma

Revved Up, a multiple graded stakes-placed son of Candy Ride, has been retired to stand his first season at stud at Lori and Francisco Bravo's River Oaks Farms in Sulphur, Okla. He will stand for a fee of $2,000 as property of the Revved Up Partnership.

Bred by the renowned Phipps Stable, Revved Up is by one of North America's top stallions and sire of sires in Candy Ride and out of Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies winner and champion Storm Flag Flying. A five-time winner with earnings of more than $370,000, Revved Up finished second in the Grade 3 Arlington Handicap and third in the G3 River City Handicap.

Revved Up ran for the Phipps Stable and trainer Shug McGaughey for much of his career, and then was sold for $350,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July Horses of Racing Age in 2018 and finished his racing in the barn of trainer Mark Casse.

“We are very excited about having him,” said Francisco Bravo. “He's a really well-bred horse. Candy Ride is a tremendous stallion and so are many of his sons, and the race record and pedigree of Storm Flag Flying speaks for itself. Revved Up had most of his success going long on the turf, but when you look at his bloodlines he should be a versatile stallion and we think he's going to generate a lot of interest among Oklahoma breeders.”

River Oaks also stands Atreides, Caleb's Posse, Excaper and Wilburn.

Toast To Vino Rosso: Colt Out Of War Relic Brings ‘A Lot Of Leg, A Lot Of Quality’

Throughout the breeding season, the Paulick Report will be sharing photos of foals from the first crop of Spendthrift Farm's Breeders' Cup Classic winner Vino Rosso in the “Toast to Vino Rosso” series.

Over the past few weeks, we've seen just how well Vino Rosso has stamped his first foals, and we've got another fine example here.

This time around, we visit a colt out of the winning Pulpit mare War Relic, bred in Kentucky by Elm Tree Farm.

The dam is a half-sister to Grade 2 winner Rush Bay, and the extended family features names including Grade 2 winner Itsaknockout and Grade 3 winner Chorwon.

Jody Huckabay of Elm Tree Farm said his operation has bought in to Vino Rosso with both fists.

“We are extremely excited about him,” Huckabay said. “We've got two of them on the ground and I've got three more coming. We just couldn't be any more pleased with what we've got so far. We've bought a couple more seasons in the horse due to what we've seen. I just think he's got a real big shot, as far as what we're seeing on the ground here so far; a lot of leg, a lot of quality. Just a lot of positive things.”

While the cross worked well on paper, Huckabay said it was the physical matchup between Vino Rosso and War Relic that sold him on the mating.

“Anymore, you certainly have to have some stretch,” he said. “You have to have some leg on these horses to get the leg in the commercial arena, and he certainly is throwing that. More than that, he's just throwing a lot of quality in these foals, in their head and their eye. The two that we have are very intelligent. They're just smart foals, which we also like.”

Vino Rosso, a 6-year-old son of Curlin, stands at Spendthrift Farm for an advertised fee of $25,000.

Vino Rosso won won six of 15 starts and earned $4,803,125 on the racetrack. In addition to his signature Breeders' Cup Classic score, the stallion picked up victories in the Grade 1 Gold Cup at Santa Anita Stakes, and the G2 Wood Memorial Stakes.

Stakes Winner Gidu, Son Of Frankel, To Enter Stud In Argentina

Gidu, a multiple stakes-winning son of Frankel, will begin his stallion career at Haras Gran Mueñca in Argentina for the 2021 Southern Hemisphere breeding season, the South American publication Turf Diario reports.

The Irish-bred 6-year-old retires with four wins in 21 starts for earnings of $305,457. From the second crop of highly-touted European champion Frankel, he was a $457,683 purchase by Zayat Stables from the 2016 Arqana Deauville August Yearling Sale.

After breaking his maiden as a juvenile, Gidu finished second in the Grade 3 Dania Beach Stakes, then earned a pair of non-graded stakes wins in the Columbia Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs and the Paradise Creek Stakes at Belmont Park. He was sent to the prestigious Royal Ascot meeting after those wins, where he finished sixth in the G1 Commonwealth Cup.

Though he consistently competed in stakes races throughout the rest of his career, Gidu's only remaining earned black type came at the beginning of his 2020 campaign, when he finished second in the G3 Tropical Turf Stakes at Gulfstream Park.

Per documents released as part of the Zayat Stables bankruptcy filings, Gidu was sold privately for $100,000 in the spring of 2020 as part of the operation's liquidation of assets. He raced twice for new owner Santa Escolastica Stable, both out-of-the-money efforts in Saratoga, to end his career.

Bred in Ireland by Ecurie Des Monceaux, Gidu is out of the winning Unbridled's Song mare Manerbe, who is also the dam of Grade 3 winner Marbre Rose and French stakes winner Aviatress.

Gidu hails from the family of Grade 1 winners Zoftig, Zaftig, and Zo Impressive, Grade 2 winner Souper Tapit, Grade 3 winner Verve's Tale, and classic-placed Tale of Verve.
