Weatherbys Releases 2021 Return of Mares

The Weatherbys Return of Mares, through Oct. 20, was published on Thursday. A total of 12,920 live foals were registered so far in The General Stud Book. In 2020 the number was 12,778 and in 2019 13,443 were registered. Of the 12,920 foals, 4,282 (+1%) are registered with the GB suffix and 8,638 (+1%) in Ireland. In 2020 those numbers were 4,236 (GB) and 8,542 (Ire), while two years ago the number of registered foals stood at 4,655 (GB) and 8,788 (Ire).

Currently there are 22,720 broodmares at stud, an increase of 358 from 2020's 22,362. There were 22,919 broodmares in 2019. Of these 22,720 broodmares, 2,949 were not covered, a higher number than 2,667 in 2020 and 2,927 in 2019. Among those not covered, the mares were split with 1,293 (GB) and 1,656 in Ireland. There were also 6,016 no returns and 355 mares were barren.

In Britain, the number of stallions increased by 10 from 149 in 2020 to 159. In Ireland, the number of stallions declined by one from 232 in 2020. National Hunt stallions dominated by number of mares bred with Sea The Stars (Ire)'s Affinisea (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire) on top with 324. Close behind him was Order of St George (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) at 312 and Maxios (GB) (Monsun {Ger}) at 309. Rounding out the top four was Crystal Ocean (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) at 302. The busiest Flat stallion in 2021 was Mehmas (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), who sired a record 56 first-crop 2-year-old winners. The Tally-Ho resident, who made a bright start to his stud career, covered 292 mares.

Gone Astray Moves To Pleasant Acres Stallions In Florida

Pleasant Acres Stallions is excited to announce the arrival of Gone Astray (Dixie Union / Illicit, by Mr. Prospector) to their successful stallion breeding facilities. His fee for 2022 is $2,500.

Gone Astray is a multiple graded stakes winner of $1,125,162 by Dixie Union, out of the Mr. Prospector mare Illicit. He won the Grade 2 Pennsylvania Derby, the G2 Ohio Derby, and the G3 Salvatore Mile. He was seven times stakes-placed and averaged up to $87,595 per start during his career.

Gone Astray entered into stud in 2012 and from there, he proved his dominance in the industry as a prolific and consistent producer. As of Oct. 27, he has accumulated $12,784,589 in progeny earnings with an average of $49,361 per start. Out of 259 runners, he has 175 winners that include 10 black type winners, 19 black type placed, and two graded stakes winners. Consistently on the leading Florida sire lists, Gone Astray was the number-three first-crop sire (2015), number-two second crop sire (2016), the number-three third crop sire (2017) 4th crop sire (2018), number-four fifth crop sire (2019), and number-three sixth crop sire (2020).

As a stallion, Gone Astray has been extremely well received and has proven success with his progeny. Some of his prominent runners to date include:

Three Rules (Gone Astray / Joy Rules, by Full Mandate) won five out of six races as a 2-year-old – four black type. He won the 2017 G3 Carry Back Stakes at Gulfstream Park, placed second in the 2017 G2 Swale Stakes, and was third in the 2017 G2 Xpressbet Fountain of Youth Stakes. Career earnings: $971,825.
Noble Drama (Gone Astray / Queen Drama, by Burning Roma) won the 2018 FTBOA Silver Charm Florida Sire Stakes (black type), the 2018 FTBOA Florida Sire Wildcat Heir Stakes (black type), the 2020 Sunshine Millions Classic Stakes (black type), and the 2020 Benny The Bull Stakes (black type). Career earnings to date: $742,837.
Starship Bonita (Gone Astray / Happy Honeymoon, by Honour and Glory) won the 2017 FTBOA Florida Sire Susan's Girl Stakes (black type), the 2018 Sheer Drama Stakes (black type), and the 2021 Sheer Drama Stakes (black type) just last month. Career earnings to date: $577,237.
Shifty She (Gone Astray / Perilous Hope, by Strong Hope) won the 2021 Powder Break Stakes (black type), the 2021 Ginger Punch Stakes (black type), and the 2021 G3 Noble Damsel Stakes. Career earnings to date: $317,395.

Gone Astray joins stallions Amira's Prince, Bellavia, Breaking Lucky, Bucchero, Curlin's Honor, Gunnevera, Handsome Mike, Leinster, Long On Value, Neolithic, No Never No More, Ride On Curlin, and Sweetontheladies, at the 220-acre farm located just northwest of Ocala. Pleasant Acres Stallions has received many accolades for excellence, including 2017 Florida Freshman Sire of the Year for Poseidon's Warrior, 2017 DRF Florida-bred Beyer Award, 2009 Florida Breeder of the Year, 2009 Florida Broodmare of the Year, Breeder of the 2009 Florida Horse of the Year, and was ranked third in the nation for leading breeders in 2009 by average earnings per starter with 10 or more starters.

Incoming Claiborne Stallion Performer Dies Of Ruptured Stomach

Claiborne Farm announced Monday that multiple graded stakes winner Performer has passed away at age five.

He was sent to the clinic Friday night, and died early Saturday morning from a ruptured stomach.

The son of Speightstown, from the family of champions Storm Flag Flying and Personal Ensign, was slated to begin his first year at stud in 2022 at the historic Claiborne Farm.

Bred by the Phipps Stable, Performer was never off the board in nine starts and earned over $420,000 racing in the colors of the Phipps and Claiborne Farm. He won the Grade 3 Discovery Stakes at age three, and took the G3 Fred W. Hooper Stakes at age five.

He will be buried in the Marchmont cemetery at Claiborne Farm.

Tacitus To Stand At Taylor Made Stallions Upon Retirement

Multiple graded stakes winner Tacitus, an earner of more than $3.7 million and a son of perennial leading sire Tapit out of champion older female and five-time Grade 1 winner Close Hatches, will stand stud duty at Taylor Made Stallions at the conclusion of his racing career, the farm announced today.

Owned in partnership by Don Alberto, Juddmonte Farms, and Taylor Made Stallions, Tacitus will stand for a fee of $10,000 S&N; a breeding right program will also be offered.

A Juddmonte Farms homebred trained by Bill Mott, Tacitus is a three-time graded stakes winner who has banked $3,767,350, while recording six triple-digit Beyer Speed Figures. Tacitus came out running as a juvenile and broke his maiden in his second career start at two. From that point forward, Tacitus competed exclusively in graded stakes races for the next three years.

“I knew he had to be a champion when I first jumped on him,” jockey Jose Ortiz told US Racing. “I love everything about him. He's got a great stride, and he's very athletic.”

In 2019, Tacitus enjoyed a spectacular sophomore season, winning the $400,000 Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby in his 3-year-old debut, stopping the clock in the stakes-record time of 1:41.90 for the 1 1/16 miles, just .15 off the track record. Tacitus overcame a troubled trip in winning the $750,000 G2 Wood Memorial Stakes —the same race his sire won—in just his fourth career start.

In racking up impressive back-to-back graded victories in Derby preps at two different tracks, Tacitus vaulted to the top of the leaderboard for the Kentucky Derby. A game third in the Kentucky Derby, defeating Grade 1 winners Improbable, Game Winner, and War of Will, Tacitus remained one of the top 3-year-olds of his generation, finishing second in the Belmont Stakes and the G1 Travers Stakes (G1).

In 2020 at age four, Tacitus proved an ultra-impressive winner of the 1 1/4-mile G2 Suburban Stakes at Belmont Park, overpowering his rivals for an 8 3/4-length victory under a hand ride. His final time for the 1 1/4 miles was a lively 1:59.51.

By a three-time champion sire, Tacitus is produced from Juddmonte's 2014 champion older female Close Hatches, one of the leading fillies of her generation and a direct descendant of 1982 Broodmare of the Year Best in Show. Also trained by Mott, Close Hatches, in her championship season in 2014, recorded successive Grade 1 victories in the Apple Blossom Handicap, the Ogden Phipps Handicap, and the Personal Ensign Stakes en route to career earnings of $2,707,300. Her additional Grade 1 wins came in the 2013 G1 Mother Goose Stakes and that year's G1 Cotillion Stakes.
