Quality Road, Candy Ride Lead Lane’s End 2021 Stallion Roster

Lane's End in Versailles, Ky., has released the advertised fees for its 2021 stallion roster, led by top commercial sire Quality Road.

Like many of the major Kentucky stallion operations, Lane's End has decreased its stud fees nearly across the board to account for the uncertain economy both inside and outside the Thoroughbred industry.

The 2021 roster is led by elite commercial sire Quality Road, who will stand for $150,000. The 14-year-old son of Elusive Quality's runners have been led this year by Grade 2 winners Dunbar Road and Captain Scotty, along with Grade 3 winner Bellafina and Belmont Stakes runner-up Dr Post.

Quality Road's yearlings have posted an average sale price of $354,947 in 2020.

Veteran sire Candy Ride joins Quality Road at the top of this year's Lane's End roster, standing for $75,000.

A 21-year-old son of Ride the Rails, Candy Ride has seen his banner carried this year by multiple Grade 1 winner Vekoma, Grade 2 winner Rideforthecause, and multiple Grade 1-placed Ollie's Candy.

Lane's End will add three rookie stallions to its roster in 2021, along with hot sire Daredevil, who returns stateside from Turkey.

Game Winner, the champion 2-year-old of 2018, will stand for an initial fee of $30,000. The 4-year-old Candy Ride colt went undefeated during his juvenile season, capped off by an Eclipse-clinching victory in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Churchill Downs.

Honor A. P. will enter stud for a fee of $15,000. A 3-year-old from the first crop of fellow Lane's End resident Honor Code, Honor A. P.'s on-track career was highlighted by a victory in the G1 Santa Anita Derby.

Rounding out the trio of newcomers is Grade 1 winner Gift Box, who will stand for $10,000. The 7-year-old Twirling Candy horse retired with earnings in excess of $1.1 million, with wins in the G1 Santa Anita Handicap, and two editions of the G2 San Antonio Stakes.

Daredevil joins the Lane's End roster in 2021 after standing the previous season in Turkey. The 8-year-old More Than Ready horse has been represented this year by Preakness Stakes winner Swiss Skydiver and Kentucky Oaks winner Shedaresthedevil, and the two star fillies filled out the Oaks exacta. Daredevil will stand for $25,000 as property of the Turkish Jockey Club.

Daredevil Returns From Turkey To Stand At Lane’s End In 2021

Leading second-crop sire Daredevil will relocate to Lane's End Farm for the 2021 breeding season.

The sire of 3-year-old sensations Swiss Skydiver and Shedaresthedevil, Daredevil is the #3 North American-based, second-crop sire behind only American Pharoah and Constitution with just over half as many starters.

Daredevil is the only first-crop sire to ever sire an individual winner of the Kentucky Oaks and the Preakness Stakes in the same year. Swiss Skydiver is only the sixth filly to win the second leg of the Triple Crown in its 145 years and only the second since Nellie Morse in 1924.

Shedaresthedevil was her sire's first classic winner in 2020 and led home the exacta for her sire in the most prestigious three-year-old fillies race of the year. These two Grade 1 winners from just 74 starters in 2020 represent 2.78 percent Grade 1 winners to starters, a staggering percentage at the elite level. This places Daredevil behind only Galileo worldwide at 3.6 percent and ahead of North American based super-sires War Front (1.5 percent), Speightstown (1.35 percent), More than Ready (1.27 percent), Tapit (.83 percent) and Into Mischief (.77 percent) in 2020.

Daredevil will stand at Lane's End as property of the Jockey Club of Turkey.

“We are extremely honored that the Jockey Club of Turkey is entrusting us with the continuation of Daredevils stallion career in America” said Bill Farish. “What he has accomplished is nothing short of remarkable. I would like to personally thank Murat Sancal for his ongoing efforts, the board members of the TJK, and especially the president Mr. Serdal Adali. This is the beginning of a very fruitful relationship with them and we are very grateful.”

Daredevil is in quarantine in preparation for his departure to Kentucky. He will arrive at Lane's End near the end of November and be available for inspection shortly after. Daredevil will stand for $25,000 in 2021.

Caravaggio Moves From Ireland To Ashford Stud For 2021

Scat Daddy's Royal Ascot superstar Caravaggio has been relocated from Coolmore's headquarters in Ireland to our American base at Ashford Stud.

“Ever since he retired to stud, Caravaggio has been supported by top American-based breeders such as David Anderson, Peter Berglar, John Gunther, Hunter Valley Farm, Runnymede Farm, Fred Hertrich, Mike Ryan, e5 Racing & Merriebelle Stables,” said Ashford's director of sales Charlie O'Connor, who co-bred the crack sprinter with his father-in-law's Windmill Manor Farms.

“This support carried into the sales ring in both the U.S. and Europe with several of his highest-priced yearlings being bought by American-based owners including Peter Brant's White Birch Farm, Wesley Ward, Ben McElroy, Susan Moulton, DJ Stables, Mike Akers and Meah/Lloyd for Calvin Nguyen. These included a $400,000 filly and a $300,000 colt sold by Gainesway at Keeneland.”

“A multiple Group 1 winner, Caravaggio is an outstanding physical and was a fantastic racehorse going unbeaten in his first six starts which included Royal Ascot wins at both two and three. His pedigree holds major appeal for breeders here being a son of Scat Daddy, one of the most successful stallions we've ever stood at Ashford, and out of a stakes winner on dirt by Holy Bull. His half-sister My Jen was a good racemare too winning a Grade 2 on the main track at Belmont for Eddie Kenneally. All in all, we thought it made a lot of sense to bring him over.”

Caravaggio stood his first two seasons at €35,000 increasing to €40,000 in 2020. He will stand at $25,000 for 2021 and is available for inspection at Ashford.
