Houston Racing Festival Highlights 2023 Sam Houston Stakes Schedule

Live racing returns to Sam Houston Race Park Friday, Jan. 6, 2023 with several changes planned for its 43-day Thoroughbred meet. The Thoroughbred meet will feature afternoon racing on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 1:00 p.m. CST. Holiday Monday racing, also at 1:00 p.m., will take place on Martin Luther King Day and President's Day.

The Houston Racing Festival highlights the stakes schedule and will be contested Saturday, Jan. 28 with a 1:00 p.m. first post. The 2023 edition will offer five stakes races, anchored by the $300,000 GIII Houston Ladies Classic S. and the $200,000 GIII John B. Connally Turf S. The $100,000 Bob Bork Texas Turf Mile S., $100,000 Bara Lass S. and $100,000 Groovy S. will be included on the undercard.

“The new schedule and start times present an opportunity to engage with our loyal simulcast guests and attract new fans with daytime racing,” said Frank Hopf, Sam Houston Race Park's Assistant General Manager. “Moving our stakes races and promotions to the afternoons will provide new opportunities for everyone.”

Great Lady M Highlights Los Al Summer Stakes Schedule

Three stakes–including a graded event–worth a combined $425,000 highlight the Los Angeles County Fair meet at Los Alamitos. The 10-day season is scheduled to begin Friday, June 24 and continue through Sunday, July 10. Racing will be conducted Friday-Sunday opening weekend (June 24-26) and the final week (July 8-10) and Friday-Monday (July 1-4) the middle week. The July 4 program is a special holiday card and will include a handicapping contest with two berths in the 2023 NTRA National Handicapping Championship in Las Vegas on the line. Post time will be 1 p.m. each day.

The richest event on the calendar is the $200,000 GII Great Lady M. S. for fillies and mares at six furlongs. Captured by champion Gamine (Into Mischief) in 2021, the Great Lady M. will be offered Monday, July 4. The $125,000 Los Alamitos Derby for 3-year-olds will be run Saturday, July 9. The other stakes on the schedule is the $100,000 Bertrando for 3-year-olds and up bred or sired in California at one mile Saturday, June 25.

NYRA Announces 2021-22 Aqueduct Winter Meet Stakes Schedule

The New York Racing Association has released the 2021-22 Aqueduct winter stakes schedule, which includes 46 stakes races on offer worth nearly $6 million in purses. The 56-day Aqueduct winter meet begins Thursday, Dec. 9 and runs through Sunday, Mar. 27. Live racing will generally be conducted Thursday through Sunday through the end of February with a holiday break set for Dec. 20-29 and the addition of a special Presidents' Day card Monday, Feb. 21. March will then feature a Friday-Sunday schedule of live racing through the conclusion of the winter meet.

As previously announced, and in accordance with New York City requirements, fans seeking to enter Aqueduct must demonstrate proof of COVID-19 vaccination. Aqueduct will re-open to the public Thursday, Nov. 11, Opening Day of the 18-day 2021 Aqueduct fall meet, which runs through Sunday, Dec. 5. Admission to Aqueduct, which will be open to the public on live race days only, is free of charge. The gates will open daily at 11 a.m. First post during the Aqueduct fall and winter meets is 12:30 p.m.

Laurel’s Spring Meet Features Seven Stakes Worth $750,000

Laurel Park will offer seven stakes worth $750,000 in purses, including automatic qualifiers for the Preakness Stakes (G1) and Black-Eyed Susan (G2), Saturday, April 17 as part of its upcoming spring meet.

The 19-day spring meet opens Thursday, April 1 and runs through Sunday, May 2, serving as a bridge between Laurel's ongoing winter meet, which began Jan. 1, and the Preakness Meet at historic Pimlico Race Course.

Racing will be conducted Thursday through Sunday during the spring meet, with the exception of Easter Sunday, April 4. Post time will be 12:40 p.m. with a special 12:15 p.m. post on Kentucky Derby day, Saturday, May 1.

Co-headlining the stakes program are the $125,000 Federico Tesio for 3-year-olds going 1 1/8 miles and the $125,000 Weber City Miss for 3-year-old fillies at about 1 1/16 miles. The Tesio serves as a 'Win and In' qualifier for Triple Crown-nominated horses to the Middle Jewel of the Triple Crown, the 146th Preakness May 15, and the Weber City Miss is a 'Win and In' event for the 97th Black-Eyed Susan May 14.

Last year's Tesio winner, Wertheimer and Frere's homebred Happy Saver, went on to win the Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) against older horses in his subsequent start to complete a perfect 4-0 sophomore campaign.

Sprinters 3 and up will go six furlongs in the $100,000 Primonetta for females and seven furlongs in the $100,000 Frank Y. Whiteley. Laurel's world-class turf course is scheduled to host its first stakes of the season – the $100,000 Dahlia for fillies and mares 3 and older and $100,000 Henry S. Clark for 3-year-olds and up, both going one mile, and the $100,000 King T. Leatherbury for 3-year-olds and up sprinting five furlongs.

Live racing returns to Laurel Park with an eight-race program Friday, March 5. The winter meet runs Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through Sunday, March 28.
