Coursetrack Set to Roll Out at Irish Tracks for 2024

Starting in 2024, all 26 Irish Racecourses will have live in-race timing information for all races broadcast on-screen and published online, the Horse Racing Ireland (HRI), Association of Irish Racecourses (AIR), Sports Information Services (SIS) and Racecourse Media Group (RMG) announced on Friday. The feature is part of the recently concluded media rights renewal between the organizations.

The system is operated by RMG's timing partners, Coursetrack. Runners will carry lightweight GPS trackers designed to fit within the saddlecloths and transmit data directly to a centralised operation at Racing TV's London studios. Coursetrack already is in operation at Leopardstown, Dundalk and Fairyhouse.

More transmitted data includes race clock, leader's speed, leader's time per furlong and distance to finish.

“Racecourses in Ireland enter a new media rights environment from January and it is imperative that we ensure there is as much information as possible for those who want to bet on the action on our tracks,” Suzanne Eade, CEO of HorseĀ  Racing Ireland, said. The rollout of timing data from Coursetrack will be a key element in that, and I warmly welcome today's announcement.”

Sectional time reports for each race will be published in the results section on RacingTV and other affiliated websites the day after racing.

“Pace is arguably the single most important factor of a horse race–horses generally run best when their energy is used optimally, which means regulating their effort as evenly as possible,” Ruby Walsh, former 12-time champion jockey and now RTE, ITV and Racing TV presenter and pundit, said. “Get the pace wrong and you'll usually get the result wrong. Sectional times are vital for my role as an analyst, especially in upgrading and downgrading a horse's performance depending on how the race and their individual race was run. And while watching a race, it's just vital to have the clock to back up what your eyes are telling you about the pace of a race.”

The Saudi Cup To Be World Pool Event

Sports Information Services (SIS) has entered into an agreement with the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) for six races on the US$31.5- million Saudi Cup race meeting hosted at King Abdulaziz Racecourse on Feb. 25 to become a HKJC World Pool event.

Established in 2019, The Saudi Cup race day has solidified itself on the global racing calendar with horses from 15 countries planning to participate this year. The feature race, the US$20-million G1 Saudi Cup, will showcase last year's top-two finishers in Emblem Road (Quality Road) and Country Grammar (Tonalist).

The HKJC will host the wagering pools on races three through eight on Saudi Cup Day, giving bettors access to the biggest international commingled pools in the world. SIS will coordinate the commercial arrangements with global pool operators. Historically, North America has been the largest participant in the Saudi Cup Day pools and this deal not only benefits that market with increased liquidity from Hong Kong, but attracts additional operators from France, the United Kingdom and Ireland, who join existing operators from Germany, Netherlands, Brazil, Peru and Panama.

“The Saudi Cup is a race that has already firmly established itself in the racing calendar and we are thrilled to have this meeting as part of the World Pool. We aim to include the best international racing events within the World Pool schedule, so it makes sense for the Saudi Cup to join the roster in 2023,” Sam Nati, HKJC's Head of Commingling, said.

The first race will be at 7:45 a.m. EST.

SIS Launching U.S. Subsidiary; Eyes Potential Growth Of Fixed Odds Wagering

United Kingdom-based Sports Information Services is launching a U.S. subsidiary, SIS Content Services Inc., showcasing the company's commitment to the U.S. and the opportunities available to digital and retail sportsbook operators and horse racing stakeholders.

SIS has been active in the market's pari-mutuel pool betting for a number of years, and offers a comprehensive range of products and services for sportsbook operators and racetracks.

For sportsbooks, SIS Content Services offers a full turnkey solution of real-time data and video feeds, trading services, and liability management on its portfolio of over 30,000 horse races, 38,000 greyhound races, and more than 100,000 competitive gaming (eSports) events. This international portfolio can add high-quality proven content to sportsbooks quickly and easily.

For racetracks, SIS offers fixed odds distribution of their racing content both domestically and globally to maximize revenue and attract new customers to the racing product. SIS is the most successful distributor of racing on a worldwide basis partnering with 118 racecourses in 16 countries.

SIS brings its expertise to the U.S. horse racing market as regulators, sportsbooks, racetracks, and horsemen's groups examine how fixed odds should be implemented as a sports betting product and as a complement to the current pari-mutuel system to grow the sport.

Richard Ames, CEO of SIS and president of SIS Content Services, said the launch played a significant part in the increased internationalization of the SIS business and comes at a time when the U.S. racing market faces unprecedented change and opportunity.

ā€œSIS will provide customers with access to the world's best horse racing content, 30 years of distribution experience, and turnkey technology with the capacity to generate new revenues both on and off-track,” Ames said. “Our offering comes with all the products and services required to satisfy stakeholders across the industry and will add significant value to their own proposition.

“When it comes to fixed odds wagering, there are obviously a number of regulatory hurdles to cross in the coming months,” Ames continued, “but there is a genuine opportunity for it to benefit both horseracing stakeholders and sportsbooks. The launch of SIS Content Services follows on the heels of a significant investment in Australia's RACELAB GLOBAL, and is further evidence of the commitment that SIS is making to racing as both a sport and a wagering offering.ā€

SIS Content Services will be led by Michele Fischer and will make a number of additional appointments in the coming months. Fischer brings a wealth of U.S. horse racing knowledge to the role and is a familiar face to many in the industry as an international racing consultant and former Sportech executive.

ā€œWe have seen an explosion in sports betting in regulated states in the last few years,” said Fischer. “The time is now for U.S. racing and all its stakeholders to be an active participant and reap the benefits of that growth as well.

“As SIS has demonstrated for decades in the UK and Ireland, and currently in Latin America, Africa, and Asia, it is extremely well-positioned to help operators and racetracks make the most of their racing content,” said Fischer. “I am excited to be leading SIS Content Services at a time when the opportunity for U.S. racing both domestically and internationally is greater than it has ever beenā€

RMG, SIS Extend Partnership

Racecourse Media Group and Sports Information Services have extended their partnership by a further three years. This partnership encompasses the distribution and transmission of audio-visual and data from British racecourses to licensed betting offices across the UK and Ireland.

Martin Stevenson, chief executive officer of RMG, said, “We are delighted to continue our partnership with SIS for a further three years. LBO revenue remains an extremely significant media rights income source for RMG's racecourses. This deal will further increase the value of LBO rights by invigorating betting turnover via first-rate production and presentation of horseracing for the LBO audience. We look forward to working with SIS on new and innovative ways in which the quality content from our racecourses can be produced and presented, including the introduction of in-play betting on racing in betting shops. This deal guarantees quality, core content for bookmakers in UK and Ireland until 2026, while ensuring there is minimal 'leakage' from the sport, in line with RMG's ethos of returning its profits to the sport. We are very grateful to all the parties who expressed an interest with a range of compelling offers.”

Richard Ames, chief executive of SIS, added, “SIS is very pleased to extend the relationship we hold with RMG and are confident that this agreement will continue to deliver excellent value for racecourses and bookmakers with a collaborative approach to growing the value of horseracing. Winning this extension in a competitive situation is testament to the good work and excellent relationship that has been fostered between the companies over the last three years. I look forward to RMG's premium racing content being the cornerstone of SIS' racing services for many years to come.”
