Keeneland Adds Bank of America as Sponsor of Valley View, Art Auction Preview Brunch

Keeneland welcomed back Bank of America as the sponsor of the GIII Valley View S., which is set for Friday, Oct. 27, and the financial institution also becomes the presenting sponsor of the Preview Brunch that will precede the 11th Sporting Art Auction at Keeneland's Sales Pavilion on Saturday, Nov. 18, the organization said in a release Friday.

“Keeneland is delighted that Bank of America has joined our roster of corporate sponsors, who participate in a variety of events and activities here and play an important role in our success,” Keeneland Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Christa Marrillia said. “We thank Bank of America for their commitment to this community and the Thoroughbred industry and look forward to celebrating our new relationship.”

The Bank of America Preview Brunch begins at 10 a.m. and is for attendees of the Sporting Art Auction slated for noon.

Cross Gate Gallery Relocates to Old Vine

The Cross Gate Gallery, which has been based at 509 East Main Street in Lexington since the 1990s, will be relocating just a few blocks away to 431 Old Vine with an official grand opening set for Feb. 1. The gallery, which is best known for its equine-focused art collection, annually hosts the Sporting Art Auction at Keeneland.

“We have been in a wonderful building for over 25 years,” said Cross Gate Gallery owner Greg Ladd. “But we have a lot of artwork to show and simply need a more upscale exhibition space. We can't be more excited to welcome our clients and potential art buyers to the new Cross Gate Gallery very soon.”

Keeneland’s Sporting Art Auction Grosses $1.9 Million

The ninth annual Sporting Art Auction, a collaboration between Keeneland and Cross Gate Gallery of Lexington held Sunday afternoon at the Keeneland Sales Pavilion, grossed $1,908,015.

Topping the auction was Andre Pater's War and Peace, a pair of signed and dated pastels, sold for $115,000, including buyer premium.

The high-priced Pater pairing was among 192 quality lots representing fine sporting art, American paintings and sculpture by renowned artists cataloged.

Fishing on the Elkhorn, a signed oil by popular Kentucky artist Paul Sawyier, brought the second-highest price of $100,050.

Works by Kentucky native Henry Faulkner commanded four of the auction's top prices: Taormina, a signed oil, sold for $59,800; Midway, a signed oil, went for $57,500; Penthouse for Alice, an oil signed, inscribed and dated '74 verso, brought $46,000; and Ode to Edith Piaf, a signed oil, was purchased for $40,250.

Peggy Kaufmann's Holding Tight, a signed bronze dated 2018, brought $46,000.

Other notable works sold as part of the Sporting Art Auction were Henry Stull's The Inaugural Running of the Connaught Cup 1912, Old Woodbine, an oil signed and dated 1912, for $42,550;

Richard Stone Reeves' Affirmed, an oil signed, inscribed and dated '90, for $40,250; Claude Grosperrin's La Coupe d'Argent a Deauville, a signed oil, for $40,250; and a 19th century American copper and zinc Weathervane of Lexington, for $37,950.

All prices include buyer premium.

In keeping with its mission, Keeneland's portion of the auction proceeds will benefit its non-profit initiatives.

Andrew Wyeth’s ‘Over The Hill’ Brings Top Bid At Sporting Art Auction

Andrew Wyeth's Over the Hill, a watercolor painted by Wyeth in 1973 that remained in his personal collection until 2006, brought $109,250, including buyer premium, to headline Sunday's eighth annual Sporting Art Auction, a collaboration between Keeneland and Cross Gate Gallery of Lexington, Ky.,  held virtually on Sunday afternoon.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, bidding on this year's auction of 188 high-quality lots representing fine sporting art, American paintings and sculpture by renowned artists was conducted online and via phone.

Gross sales for the Sporting Art Auction totaled $1,625,945.

LeRoy Neiman's Satchmo, an oil portrait of famed jazz musician Louis Armstrong signed, dated '61 and inscribed 'Satch,' sold for the day's second-highest price of $103,500, including buyer premium.  Neiman and Armstrong often crossed paths during their careers and held a mutual respect and admiration for each other's talent.

Bringing the auction's third-highest price of $72,000, including buyer premium, was Henry Stull's Domino with Jockey Up, an oil portrait signed and dated 1900. This depiction of Domino, a famed sprinter and breed-shaping sire, was part of the recent Tales from the Turf: The Kentucky Horse, 1925-1950 exhibit at the Speed Art Museum in Louisville.

Other notable works sold as part of the Sporting Art Auction were Henry Faulkner's Clay House, an oil signed, dated '71 en verso with sticker reading 'The Henry Clay House' for $47,150; Edward Troye's Cattle in a Landscape, an oil signed and dated 1848, for $42,550; Troye's Mambrino Patchen, an oil portrait signed and dated September 23, 1868, for $40,250; Neiman's Ascot Jockey, an oil signed, dated '65 and inscribed en verso for $40,250; and Andre Pater's Caravan to Appleby Fair, a signed oil for $40,250. All prices include buyer premium.
