50th Annual Eclipse Awards To Be Presented Virtually, Program Will Air Live On Jan. 28

The National Thoroughbred Racing Association, National Turf Writers and Broadcasters and Daily Racing Form announced today that the 50th Annual Eclipse Awards, presented by Spendthrift Farm, will air live on TVG and Racetrack Television Network on Thursday, Jan. 28, beginning at 8 p.m. ET., and also streamed on other outlets and platforms.

This year's ceremony will be a virtual telecast. NBC Sports' Kenny Rice will anchor the program from Lexington, and will be joined by many fellow Eclipse Awards' masters of ceremonies and presenters from the past 20 years. Britney Eurton and Jeannine Edwards will present from historic Spendthrift Farm, home to some of racing's greatest champions. Acacia Courtney and Gabby Gaudet will present from Gulfstream Park in Florida; Gary Stevens and Daily Racing Form National Correspondent Jay Privman from Santa Anita Park in California, and Kenny Mayne from EPSN Studios.

In addition to TVG and RTN, the Eclipse Awards ceremony will be shown live on the following outlets: NTRA.com; America's Best Racing Facebook page and Twitter feed; XBTV Facebook page; DRF.com; Bloodhorse.com; ThoroughbredDailyNews.com; Equibase.com; Breeders' Cup Facebook page and YouTube channel; MyRacehorse Facebook page and YouTube channel; and TOBA.org.

In addition to honoring the 17 winners in the horse and human categories, Thomas Goldsmith will receive the Eclipse Award as the 2020 Horseplayer of the Year. Members of the media will be honored for outstanding coverage in six categories.

In keeping with the 50th anniversary theme, results from the NTRA Eclipse 50 Contest, a vote by fans of their 10 favorite Eclipse Award-champion horses and their favorite champion trainer and jockey from the past 50 years, will also be revealed throughout the show.

The Eclipse Awards are conducted by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA), National Turf Writers and Broadcasters (NTWAB), and Daily Racing Form. The Eclipse Awards ceremony is produced by the NTRA.

The Eclipse Awards are sponsored by Spendthrift Farm, Roberts Communications, Four Roses Bourbon, Daily Racing Form, Breeders' Cup, FanDuel Group, The Stronach Group, TVG, Dean Dorton, Stonestreet Farm, Keeneland, Racetrack Television Network, Jackson Family Wines, Florida HBPA, Runhappy, Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital, Hallway Feeds and the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association.

The Eclipse Awards are named after the great 18th-century racehorse and foundation sire Eclipse, who began racing at age five and was undefeated in 18 starts, including eight walkovers. Eclipse sired the winners of 344 races, including three Epsom Derbies.

Juddmonte Reveals 2021 U.S. Mating Plans

Eclipse champion Close Hatches (First Defence), dam of multiple graded stakes winner Tacitus (Tapit), will be visiting WinStar Farm stallion Constitution this year, highlighting a list of high-profile U.S.-based mares whose 2021 mating plans were released Monday by Juddmonte Farm. The 11-year-old mare, who has a yearling filly by Constitution's sire Tapit and was bred to that Gainesway stallion last year, is one of several Juddmonte mares expected to be bred to Constitution this year. The list also includes 2012 Canadian 2-year-old filly champion and GI Darley Alcibiades S. winner Spring in the Air (Spring at Last).

“We are breeding quite a few mares to Constitution,” Juddmonte's Leif Aaron said. “His early results speak for themselves and he is able to get a Classic-type of horse which is what we are after. He is capable of siring graded-stakes caliber horses at a very impressive frequency. He seems to fit nicely with many of our mares for a variety of reasons.”

Juddmonte Farm has eight mares booked to Into Mischief in 2021.

“He is such a strong influence of speed and determination and he matches well with our Classic mares,” Aaron said of the Spendthrift stallion.

Among the Juddmonte mares visiting Into Mischief this year are four-time Grade I winner Emollient (Empire Maker)–who was repatraited to the U.S. after producing foals by the farm's English superstar Frankel (GB) the last three years–and Hachita (Gone West), dam of Grade I winner Announce (GB) (Selkirk).

Of what he expects from progeny of Into Mischief, Aaron said, “Without sounding like a broken record, it really is their speed, soundness and determination that makes his offspring so successful. He really stamps his offspring. When an Into Mischief walks out of the barn, you usually have a pretty good idea of who the sire is.”

Juddmonte has been represented by a trio of homebred 'TDN Rising Stars' from the barn of trainer Brad Cox in the last few months, two of whom–Mandaloun and Prate–are by Into Mischief.

“Those two colts reinforce that Into Mischief is a sire that is consistently getting winners,” Aaron said.

Mandaloun, tabbed a 'TDN Rising Star' following a debut win at Keeneland in October, was third as the beaten favorite in the Jan. 16 GIII Lecomte S. in his sophomore debut.

“Mandaloun is scheduled to make his next start in the [Feb. 13 GII] Risen Star S.,” Aaron said. “He is still a little green, so we are going to add blinkers for his next start in hopes of getting him to focus a little more.”

Prate was named a 'TDN Rising Star' following a debut win at Fair Grounds Dec. 19. The gray colt worked four furlongs in :50.00 (52/133) in New Orleans Sunday.

“We are taking our time with Prate and trying to find the right spot for him,” Aaron said. “Both colts are doing great.”

Shoppers at the recent Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale nearly had a chance to buy into the families of both 'Rising Stars,' with Prate's half-sister by Kantharos catalogued as hip 106 and a half-sister by Arrogate to Mandaloun's dam Brooch (Empire Maker) catalogued as hip 207, but both were withdrawn from the auction.

“Both of those short yearlings that were entered are fillies and their relatives made it an easy decision for us to hold on to them for now,” Aaron said. “At the moment we are going to let them grow up a little and reevaluate from there.”

Juddmonte's trio of 'Rising Stars' is completed by the filly Sun Path (Munnings) and her sire will also be covering Juddmonte mares in 2021.

“Munnings is a horse that has done it the hard way and continued to grind his way to the top,” Aaron said. “With Sun Path, we were a little disappointed in her last race, [fourth in the Jan. 16 Silverbulletday S.], but everyone has a bad day now and then. We will wait for Brad's advice on how she is doing and where to go with her next.”

Among the other Juddmonte matings announced Monday, Soothing Touch (Touch Gold), dam of Emollient, will visit Curlin and Grade I winner Antonoe (First Defence) will visit Speightstown. Multiple Grade I winner Paulassilverlining (Ghostzapper) and Rising Tornado (Storm Cat), dam of Close Hatches, will both be bred to Tapit.

First Foal by Sprint Champion Mitole A ‘Good-Sized Colt With A Nice Hip’

The first reported foal by Spendthrift Farm's Mitole, 2019 Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) hero and Champion Sprinter in North America, is a colt that was born at Ballyrankin Stud in Lexington.

“He's a very attractive, good-sized colt with a nice hip and a lot of quality. I'm very pleased with him,” said Sally Lockhart of Ballyrankin Stud.

Bred by Jeff Ganje, the dark bay colt is out of the Mineshaft mare Kiss Mine, a multiple graded stakes-placed performer that earned nearly half a million dollars on the racetrack.

Mitole was the only male to win four Grade One races on dirt in 2019, including the aforementioned Breeders' Cup Sprint-G1, the prestigious Met Mile-G1, Churchill Downs S.-G1 on Kentucky Derby day and Saratoga's Forego-G1 – breaking a 40-year stakes record in the latter, en route to becoming a Horse of the Year finalist and runaway winner of Champion Sprinter honors.

Campaigned by Bill and Corinne Heiligbrodt, Mitole retired to Spendthrift with earnings of $3,104,910 and covered 230 mares in his first season at stud, making him the second most popular freshman sire in 2020. He is set to stand his second season this year for a fee of $15,000 S&N.

Champion Mitole’s First Foal is a Colt

Spendthrift Farm's Mitole (Eskendereya-Indian Miss, by Indian Charlie) was represented by his first foal when a colt was born at Ballyrankin Stud near Lexington. The colt, bred by Jeff Ganje and out of Kiss Mine (Mineshaft), was reported as born Jan. 23. Kiss Mine captured six black-type wins and was multiple graded placed during her racing campaign.

“He's a very attractive, good-sized colt with a nice hip and a lot of quality,” said Sally Lockhart of Ballyrankin Stud. “I'm very pleased with him.”

Mitole was named Eclipse champion sprinter for 2019 during a season that netted four Grade I victories, including the Breeders' Cup Sprint, the Met Mile, the Forego S., and the Churchill Downs S. The earner of over $3.1 million raced in the colors of Bill and Corinne Heiligbrodt before retiring to Spendthrift for the 2020 season. He covered 230 mares last year, the second-highest number for a freshman of 2020 behind only his studmate Vino Rosso (Curlin), who was also recently represented by his first foal.

Mitole will stand the 2021 breeding season for $15,000, stands and nurses terms.
