‘She’s Going To Be A Knockout Yearling’: First Foal Is A Filly For Spendthrift Farm’s Coal Front

Spendthrift Farm's Coal Front, the five-time graded winner and earner of over $1.8 million, sired his first reported foal on Jan. 26 when a filly was born at Shade Tree Farm in Ocala, Fla.

“This is a good foal. Nice, big, strong filly with a lot of leg, good shoulder and hip. I like her best of the three foals the mare's had,” said Bert Pilcher, owner of Shade Tree Farm. “She was quickly up and quickly nursed, everything was perfect. If I owned the stallion, I'd sure be happy about this foal. I think she's going to be a knockout yearling.”

Bred by Tracy Pinchin & Kenneth D'Oyen, the flashy bay filly is out of the Wildcat Heir mare Defying Gravity, an 11-time winner on the track who hails from the immediate family of multiple graded stakes winner and sire Too Much Bling.

An earner of $1,825,280, Coal Front captured graded stakes at five different distances – from six furlongs to 1 1/16 miles on dirt – and at five different racetracks. After a dominant maiden win on debut at Keeneland and allowance victory over eventual Grade 1 winner Patternrecognition at Belmont in his second start, the striking dark bay colt stayed undefeated with a victory in the 6 1/2-furlong Grade 2 Amsterdam Stakes at Saratoga. He closed out his 3-year-old season with a win in the six-furlong G3 Gallant Bob Stakes at Parx, earning a 107 Beyer – one of the fastest of the year by a sophomore.

Coal Front won the seven-furlong G3 Mr. Prospector Stakes at Gulfstream as a 4-year-old and carried his top form into his 5-year-old season, winning the 1 1/16-mile, $500,000 G3 Razorback Stakes at Oaklawn and $1.5-million G2 Godolphin Mile at Meydan.

A $575,000 2-year-old purchase, Coal Front was victorious in eight of 13 lifetime starts before retiring to Spendthrift, where he is set to stand his second season for a fee of $5,000 S&N.

Coal Front Sires First Foal

Spendthrift Farm's Coal Front (Stay Thirsty–Miner's Secret, by Mineshaft) sired his first reported foal Jan. 26 when a filly was born at Shade Tree Farm in Ocala, FL. Bred by Tracy Pinchin & Kenneth D'Oyen, the flashy bay filly is out of the Wildcat Heir mare Defying Gravity.

Mary Holthaus Voted Winner Of Eclipse 50 Contest; Secretariat Fan-Favorite

Mary Holthaus first became a fan of Thoroughbred racing while watching Secretariat uncork his legendary form during his sweep of the 1973 Triple Crown. Forty-eight years later, Holthaus and Big Red were linked again as the former was selected as the winner of the NTRA Eclipse 50 Contest, which asked fans to choose their top 10 favorite Eclipse Awards champions, along with their favorite champion jockey and trainer, from the past 50 years.

Holthaus, who resides in Easton, Maryland, was randomly selected from the participants who submitted a ballot. The longtime racing fan won a trip for two to Lexington, Ky., to spend a day at the races at Keeneland Race Course, tour the Four Roses Bourbon Distillery and visit historic Spendthrift Farm, home of 2020 Horse of the Year Authentic.

“I am still shocked that I won this contest,” said Holthaus, who owns shares in four horses through MyRacehorse.com. “I became interested in racing in 1973 due to Secretariat. In fact, due to Secretariat, my life would change forever. I have been to Kentucky two times before, once to see Secretariat when he was alive and one time to attend the Derby and visit the horse farms in Lexington.

“I am very thrilled to go to Spendthrift Farm and see the top stallion in the country along with all their other wonderful horses.”

Holthaus was announced as the Eclipse 50 contest winner during the 50th annual Eclipse Awards ceremony, which was presented virtually on January 28 by Spendthrift Farm. Later in the broadcast, it was revealed – fittingly – that Secretariat himself had been voted the No. 1 all-time Eclipse Awards champion.

Secretariat was followed in the balloting by 1977 Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew in second. Champion Zenyatta was third with 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah fourth and two-time Horse of the Year Cigar fifth. Affirmed, winner of the 1978 Triple Crown, was sixth in the rankings followed by Hall of Famers John Henry, Ruffian, Forego, and Spectacular Bid completing the top 10.

Hall of Famer Bob Baffert was voted the all-time favorite Eclipse Award-winning trainer with Laffit Pincay, Jr. selected as the top Eclipse Award-winning jockey.

The Eclipse 50 ballot consisted of 10 horses, one jockey and one trainer from each of the past five decades selected by a panel consisting of media, racing historians and others.

2020 Eclipse Awards: Authentic Voted Horse Of The Year In A Landslide

Kentucky Derby and Breeders' Cup Classic winner Authentic was named Horse of the Year for 2020 in the 50th annual Eclipse Awards hosted by Spendthrift Farm on Thursday evening but held virtually with no live audience because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

A 2017 foal sired by Into Mischief out of Flawless, by Mr. Greeley, Authentic was bred in Kentucky by Peter E. Blum Thoroughbreds, Inc., owned by Spendthrift Farm LLC, MyRaceHorse Stable, Madaket Stables LLC and Starlight Racing, and trained by Bob Baffert. After a maiden victory in his career debut as a 2-year-old in 2019, Authentic won five of seven starts in 2021, including three Grade 1 stakes: the TVG.com Haskell Stakes, Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve, and Longines Breeders' Cup Classic.

He also won the G3 Sham Stakes and G2 San Felipe Stakes at his home base at Santa Anita Park. Authentic's lone defeats came in the G1 Santa Anita Derby and G1 Preakness (to 3-year-old filly champion Swiss Skydiver.

Authentic got 224 first-place votes for Horse of the Year, with Monomoy Girl receiving seven, Swiss Skydiver six and Vekoma one.

Authentic was retired to Spendthrift, where he will stand alongside his sire.

This voting established the top three finalists in each division, whose names were released on Jan. 16, 2021.

The tallies below represent only first-place votes from members of the consolidated voting entities, NTRA, Daily Racing Form, and National Turf Writers And Broadcasters.
