Cinco Charlie Sold To Stand At Leadem Farm In Texas

Grade 3 winner and promising young sire Cinco Charlie (Indian Charlie–Ten Halos, by Marquetry) has been purchased by Bob and Tyree Wolesensky's Leadem Farm and will relocate there for the 2022 breeding season after spending his first five seasons at Spendthrift Farm. Jay Goodwin orchestrated the deal.

“Texas racing is thriving and the breeding business is coming back,” said Goodwin. “Bob and Tyree approached me about finding a stallion that would fit Texas and I don't think we could have found a better one. Cinco Charlie was a brilliantly fast 2-year-old who won the Bashford Manor, was owned by Bill & Corinne Heiligbrodt and trained by Steve Asmussen, Texas Hall of Famers. This horse is Texas through and through.

“Cinco Charlie had the speed and precocity that Texas breeders want,” Goodwin continued. “Leadem Farm is an absolutely beautiful operation in the heart of Texas horse country and I'm sure that Cinco Charlie will have a long and successful career there. I want to thank Spendthrift Farm, particularly Eric Gustavson, Ned Toffey, Mark Toothaker and Bill Heiligbrodt for helping this transaction take place.”

Cinco Charlie won eight of his 18 career starts, for earnings of $608,920 with seven total stakes wins. He currently sits in the top 30 on the second-crop sire list and his top runners include the stakes-winning colt Huntsinger as well as Five Pics Please, who was second in the Grade 3 Sweet Life Stakes at Santa Anita earlier this year. Cinco Charlie's second crop includes the stakes-placed Serape and the impressive recent maiden winner Saint Charles.

Second Chances: Uncle Mo Filly Earns Spot in Frizette Off Strong Debut Third

In this continuing series, TDN's Senior Editor Steve Sherack catches up with the connections of promising maidens to keep on your radar.

After storming home with an eye-catching rally to finish a close third on debut at Saratoga, A Mo Reay (f, 2, Uncle Mo–Margaret Reay, by Pioneerof the Nile) will get her shot at the big leagues in Sunday's 'Win and You're In' GI Frizette S. at Belmont Park.

The My Racehorse Stable and Spendthrift Farm LLC colorbearer, off at 6-1 in her six-furlong unveiling for Todd Pletcher Aug. 29 (video), was under a ride and outsprinted in ninth through an opening quarter in :22.46. She finally started to get into the race nearing the quarter pole, but really had her work cut out for her as she was guided eight wide by Luis Saez at the top of the stretch.

The dark bay responded beautifully out in the clear while racing on her left lead down the center of the course, and, after finally switching over in deep stretch, came rocketing home in a field-best :12.60 to finish within a half-length of the highly regarded Gerrymander (Into Mischief). A Mo Reay earned a 71 Beyer Speed Figure for the effort.

“She made a really impressive move,” said Joe Mishak, MyRacehorse's Racing Operations Manager.

“It took her about three quarters of the race to figure out what the heck was going on. She took a lot of dirt. When the light bulb finally went on, it was really exciting to see her fly down the lane and finish up and just miss that score there.”

A Mo Reay has breezed three times since her debut at Pletcher's Saratoga base, including a four-furlong move in :49.51 (14/35) Sept. 26. She will stretch out to a one-turn mile for the Frizette.

“It's definitely a big jump up in class with a heavy and deserving favorite [Echo Zulu] in the race,” Mishak said. “All of us viewed it as a winning effort, considering how that first race unfolded and the way she finished up. Really, though, the determining factor was listening to Todd's confidence in the filly. He's been really complimentary of her progression since the summer and anytime you have Todd in your corner saying, 'I think we should give it a shot,' you certainly have to give it strong consideration.

He continued, “And at the end of the day, she's got more training under her belt now, gets the added distance, and there should be a fair amount of pace in there. With her running style, she can come flying down the lane again and hopefully that's good enough.”

Bred by T & G Farm of Kentucky LLC, A Mo Reay brought $400,000 as a Keeneland September yearling. She was produced by grassy GIII Miss Grillo S. runner-up Margaret Reay, a half-sister to SW Lezendary (Zensational). This is also the female family of GISW Wonder Lady Anne L (Real Quiet). A Mo Reay is bred similar to Uncle Mo's GISW and promising young stallion Outwork, who is out of an Empire Maker mare.

Previous standouts featured in 'Second Chances' include: GI Runhappy Santa Anita Derby winner Honor A. P. (Honor Code), GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint winner and Royal Ascot G2 Norfolk S. runner-up Golden Pal (Uncle Mo), MGISW and 'TDN Rising Star' Paradise Woods (Union Rags), GIII Las Virgenes S. heroine Moonlight d'Oro (Medaglia d'Oro), GII Los Alamitos Futurity winner and MGISP Spielberg (Union Rags), GSW Backyard Heaven (Tizway), and MSW and 'TDN Rising Star' Gidu (Ire) (Frankel {GB}).

Spendthrift Farm Announces 2022 Fees: Into Mischief At $250,000; Yaupon Enters Stud At $30,000

Spendthrift Farm has announced stud fees for its roster of 25 stallions set to stand at the Lexington-based farm for the upcoming 2022 breeding season, led again by North America's reigning two-time champion General Sire, Into Mischief who will stand for $250,000 S&N.

Spendthrift has added four new stallions for 2022 including recently retired Grade 1 winners Basin, Known Agenda and Yaupon, along with multi-millionaire By My Standards who remains in training through the end of the racing season.

“It is important to us that we continue to offer breeders both quality and value at all levels of the market, and we believe our 2022 stallion roster and fees reflect that,” said Ned Toffey, Spendthrift general manager. “We are very encouraged by a lot of positive indicators in the commercial yearling market, including strong sales numbers and high clearance rates. There has been good health at the sales, and breeders have had the chance to make money. Our aim is to provide opportunity for every breeder so that he or she can have confidence in being rewarded by the quality and value we offer.”

Yaupon, winner of last month's Forego S. (G1) at Saratoga, heads the new stallions with an introductory fee of $30,000 S&N. The Uncle Mo colt recently retired with earnings of $703,264. Known Agenda, this year's Florida Derby (G1) winner by Curlin, will stand for $10,000 S&N, and Basin, winner of the Hopeful S. (G1) at two, will stand for $7,500 S&N. A fee for By My Standards will be set upon retirement.

Popular second-season sire Authentic, the reigning Horse of the Year by Into Mischief, will stand for $70,000 S&N in 2022, down slightly from his introductory fee. Omaha Beach joins Yaupon at $30,000, also down slightly from the previous breeding season.

Bolt d'Oro, whose first yearlings have been well-received this summer to the tune of a $179,757 sales average, will see a slight increase in his fee to $20,000 S&N. Vino Rosso, the 2019 Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) hero and champion by Curlin, will also stand for $20,000 S&N, down slightly for his third season at stud.

Spendthrift's stallions under $20,000 are led by multiple Grade 1-winning millionaire Vekoma who will stand his second season at stud for a reduced fee of $17,500 S&N. Emerging sire Goldencents and champion Mitole both remain at $15,000 S&N, and Jimmy Creed and Lord Nelson both remain at $10,000 S&N.

Three stallions will participate in Spendthrift's “Safe Bet” program in 2022, including Cloud Computing ($5,000), Free Drop Billy ($5,000) and Mor Spirit ($5,000). All three will have their first respective 2-year-olds hitting the track, and the program ensures them siring a graded stakes winner in 2022 or no stud fee is owed for that respective stallion.

Spendthrift is planning for open houses to return, starting during the Fasig-Tipton October sale. Stallions are also available for inspection upon appointment from 1-3pm most days.
