Bishops Bay Skips Over Heels and On To ‘Rising Star’-dom at the Fair Grounds

Bishops Bay (c, 3, Uncle Mo–Catch My Drift, {SW & GISP, $280,540}, by Pioneerof the Nile) posted a noteworthy 97 Beyer Speed Figure on debut Feb. 18 at the Fair Grounds, defeating next-out 'Rising Star' First Mission (Street Sense) in the process and showed his own 'TDN Rising Star'-worthy determination Sunday at the venue in his first trip at two-turns.

Breaking in line with First Defender (Quality Road) and keen to go with that one, the Triple Crown-nominated bay was forced to take back when that early leader crossed over in front of him and wound up clipping heels going into the first turn. In an excellent display of athleticism to stay on his feet, he overcame the early trouble to recover and return to applying pressure from two wide in that leader. The colts locked horns around the far turn and Bishops Bay eventually got the best of that one inside the furlong grounds. Inching away from that challenge, he had to fend off a second from stablemate Demolition Duke (Good Magic) as that one loomed large in the late stages. Rising to meet yet another question, he gamely provided an answer and held off the charge by a neck on the line.

The year younger half-brother to 2021 $825,000 KEENOV procurement Strava (Into Mischief), MSP, $282,340 hails from the female family of GSP Mindy Sue (Pleasantly Perfect), who herself produced MSP Malibu Max (Malibu Moon). Bishops Bay commanded a handsome tag of $450,000 at KEESEP from the BSW/Crow Colts Group back in 2021. Dam Catch My Drift hit the board in the GI Beldame S., and as a broodmare has also produced a 2-year-old colt by Constitution as well as a yearling filly by Improbable. She's due to Not This Time for 2023.

Into Mischief’s Root Cause Overcomes Traffic to Earn ‘Rising Star’ Nod

Root Cause (f, 3, Into Mischief–Vertical Vision {MSW, $202,979), by Pollard's Vision), second at Saratoga Aug. 14 last season in a 1 1/16-mile turf maiden which yielded SP Towhead (Malibu Moon), SP Beauitfulnavigator (Ire) (Expert Eye {GB}), and SP Forever Dixie (Quality Road), made it look effortless here en route to 'TDN Rising Star'-dom at 1-5 favoritism in her 2023 bow over Gulfstream Park grass.

Breaking well but in no hurry to challenge the eager early speed, Root Cause stalked from the two path in third through the first bend. Midway up the backstretch, the eye-catching bay found herself locked in traffic as Tawaret (Pioneerof the Nile) rushed up the rail to claim an opening and the field was closing ranks around her for the run through the far turn. Shuffled back to fifth as 1:13.80 flashed across the board, Irad Ortiz opted for the overland route, and was full of horse when they arrived at the head of the stretch. Unleashing a wicked turn of foot, Root Cause put 2 1/2 lengths on her rivals with a motionless rider in the irons and won as easily as she pleased to claim her diploma over Settling Storm (Tonalist).

A half to Vertical Oak (Giant Oak), MGSW, $773,095–herself dam of 'TDN Rising Star' SP Giant Mischief (Into Mischief)–the victress is her sire's 37th runner to get the TDN stamp of approval. Half-brother Payne (Paynter), SP, $437,870 was a six-time winner in his own right. Thus far the most recent to the races, Root Cause has a 2-year-old half-sister Mitole Vision (Mitole) as well as a yearling half-sister by Authentic. Vertical Vision visited Caravaggio for 2023.

Ten Share Furlong Bullet at OBS

Ten juveniles shared the furlong bullet time of :9 4/5 during Tuesday's first session of the under-tack show for the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's March 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale. Raul Reyes's Kings Equine sent out eight juveniles to work at OBS Tuesday, including three who hit that bullet mark.

“Personally, I thought the conditions were great,” Reyes said. “My horses breezed very well. I can say nothing but nice things about the way the track was today. I think it was very fair.”

Leading the Kings Equine workers Tuesday were colts by Hard Spun (hip 16, video) and Arrogate (hip 24, video), and a filly by Liam's Map (hip 130, video).

The Hard Spun colt, out of a half-sister to multiple Grade I winner Paradise Woods (Union Rags), is being consigned by Kings Equine on behalf of breeder Spendthrift Farm. The colt RNA'd for $190,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale.

“We knew he was a nice horse,” Reyes said of the juvenile. “Spendthrift had a big opinion of him [in September]. They didn't sell him and they decided to give me an opportunity to sell him at the 2-year-old sale. He has matured and gotten stronger since then. He really showed up today.”

Reyes made a timely purchase when he acquired the son of Arrogate out of graded-placed Sensitively (Street Sense) for $50,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton July sale.

“When I bought the horse, Arrogate was really cold,” Reyes said of his purchase last summer. “He hardly had any winners. Two weeks after I bought him, he had a bunch of winners. It was good timing. It's not like I'm a genius or anything. I liked Arrogate, I saw one that was affordable and I bought him.”

Reyes added of the juvenile, “He's very quick and he's very athletic.”

Scott and Evan Dilworth purchased the daughter of Liam's Map out of stakes-placed Tiger Silk (Aus) (All American {Aus}) for $130,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale.

“I can say nothing but nice things about her,” Reyes said of the filly. “She breezed very well, but we knew she was always pretty fast. So it was no surprise.”

The Gladwells' Top Line Sales sent out a pair of fillies to work Tuesday's bullet time: a daughter of Munnings (hip 122, video) and a daughter of City of Light (hip 123, video).

Also represented by a pair of bullet workers Tuesday was GOP Racing Stable Corp., which sent out a filly by Twirling Candy (hip 44, video) and a filly by Khozan (hip 149, video).

A colt by Bernardini (hip 54) worked in :9 4/5 for McKathan Bros. Sales, while a colt by Omaha Beach (hip 161) went in :9 4/5 for Eddie Woods and a son of Mitole (hip 143) hit the :9 4/5 mark for Dynasty Thoroughbreds.

Tuesday's session of the under-tack show began at 8 a.m. with temperatures in the mid-50s and ended just short of 3 p.m. with temperatures in the upper 60s.

Working in the final set of the day, just past 1:30 p.m., a filly by Mo Town (hip 2) turned in the day's fastest quarter-mile work of :20 4/5 for consignor Tom McCrocklin, who purchased her for $3,500 at last year's OBS October sale.

The under-tack show continues through Friday with sessions beginning at 8 a.m. daily. The March sale will be held next Monday through Wednesday. Bidding commences each day at 11 a.m.

For Spirit of Makena’s Connections, Patience Is a Virtue Rewarded In San Carlos

For owner/breeder Bruce Chandler, patience was a virtue rewarded when his eye-catching Spirit of Makena captured the GIII San Carlos S. in just his four career start.

A head shy from perfection in his spaced-out career, Spirit of Makena debuted late in his 4-year-old season; not seen until an Aug. 5 maiden special at Del Mar last season. He was hounded every step of the way on his step up to allowance optional company Sept. 11 in his first trip at the mile and just couldn't hold off Holden the Lute (Midnight Lute) on the wire. Gone until Feb. 11 this year, he outdueled GSP Anarchist (Distorted Humor) in a six-panel optional claimer dash at Santa Anita to return to the winner's enclosure as his prep for this graded contest.

Taken off the front as Forbidden Kingdom was allowed to set his own pace, Spirit of Makena was never far behind and content to track off the rail to avoid hooking into a speed duel. Urged along by Joe Bravo as the pair rolled into the turn, he hit the lead by the three-sixteenths and left Forbidden Kingdom in his wake to pull clear under steady handling by 1 1/2 lengths. Forbidden Kingdom kept open ground on the rest of the field as Get Her Number rolled in from the back to close out the trifecta.

“Coming out of the last race he won, he came out of it great and he's been training great,” said conditioner George Papaprodromou, who notched his second stakes win of the meet. “He was doing great leading into this race and we tried.  Obviously, it was a tough spot [but] we gave it a shot. He ran huge and what can I say? He's a nice horse.”

Pedigree Notes:

Spirit of Makena becomes the 94th stakes winne/50th graded winner for his leading sire Ghostzapper. The Ghostzapper cross over Gilded Time is also responsible for MGISW Shaman Ghost.

The most accomplished runner from his three-time winning dam, Spirit of Makena has a 3-year-old unraced half-sister by Merit Man. He hails from the extended female family of 10-time victor and Canadian staple GSP Spigot (Plugged Nickel).
