Forza Di Oro Gives Speightstown Back-To-Back Winners of the Discovery

Forza Di Oro (Speightstown) took full advantage of an ideal run through the race and sprinted home fastest of all to give his sire a second consecutive victory in the GIII Discovery S., following on the success of Phipps Stable’s Performer 12 months ago.

Very alertly into stride for Junior Alvarado, the Don Alberto homebred fell into the perfect spot, as Monday Morning Qb (Imagining) set a strong pace from longshot Ralston (Tapiture) to his outside. Attachment Rate (Hard Spun) did it toughest three wide punching the breeze, while Shared Sense (Street Sense) was content to monitor things from last. Shuffled back a spot racing into the final three furlongs, though still traveling very much like a winner, Forza Di Oro went on the attack when Ralston drifted out a path in upper stretch and, despite racing on his incorrect lead into the final eighth of a mile, came away to a convincing victory. Monday Morning Qb was not disgraced in second, while Shared Sense was forced to cover a bit of ground on the turn and came home a one-paced third.

A maiden winner at second asking going Belmont’s one-turn 8 1/2-furlong trip last Oct. 26, Forza Di Oro beat just one home as an 11-2 chance in the GII Remsen S. Dec. 7 and went missing. He belied odds of 10-1 to score by a neck in his Oct. 9 allowance comebacker in Elmont and though he had his fair share of backers Saturday, was the fourth choice in the field of five.

Don Alberto Corporation acquired Forza Di Oro’s SW & GSP dam for $410,000 in foal to Tapit at Keeneland November in 2013, and the colt she was carrying at the time became Silver Dust, a three-time graded winner of over $885,000. Filare l’Oro is a half-sister to multiple Korean champion Cheongdam Dokki (To Honor and Server) as well as MGSW Gouldings Green (Charismatic), and the further female family includes MGISW Stop Traffic (Cure the Blues), the dam of GISW and ‘TDN Rising Star’ Cross Traffic (Unbridled’s Song) and MSW Thirteen Arrows (Indian Charlie). Filare l’Oro is the dam of a 2-year-old colt by the late Empire Maker and most recently returned to Speightstown, who is now the sire of 119 worldwide black-type winners and 58 graded/group winners. Forza Di Oro is the 21st SW and 9th GSW produced by a daughter of Hard Spun.

Echo Town Retired to Ashford

Grade I winner Echo Town (Speightstown–Letgomyecho, by Menifee) has been retired from racing and will stand for a fee of $10,000 at Coolmore’s Ashford Stud.

“We are delighted that Echo Town will be coming to Ashford,” said Ashford’s Director of Sales Charlie O’Connor. “He’s a very good-looking horse and Speightstown is making an impression as a sire of sires. As one of the best sprinters of his generation we think Echo Town offers a similar profile to our own Munnings who continues to go from strength to strength.”

Echo Town broke his maiden first out at Fair Grounds for Steve Asmussen, earning ‘TDN Rising Star’ status in the process. Two more convincing wins followed at Oaklawn Park and Churchill Downs before he was second in the GI Woody Stephens S. at Belmont. Next time out in the GI H. Allen Jerkens S. at Saratoga, he turned the tables on Woody Stephens victor No Parole (Violence) with a convincing 3 1/2-length score (video).

“We are extremely excited for Echo Town to stand at Coolmore America,” said co-owner Michael Levinson of L&N Racing. “He has been a star on the racetrack, and we’re confident Coolmore will give him every opportunity to succeed as a stallion. We look forward to seeing his foals hit the ground in 2022.”

A son of GII Forward Gal S. winner Letgomyecho, Echo Town is a half-brother to GSW J Boys Echo (Mineshaft) and GSP placed Unbridled Outlaw (Unbridled’s Song).

Echo Town is already at Ashford and available for inspection by appointment.

Speightstown’s Astute Stays Undefeated for Mandella in Desi Arnaz

Astute debuted Oct. 12 on the Santa Anita lawn, going 5 1/2 furlongs and getting a neck win after leading throughout. The $425,000 Keeneland September yearling graduate skipped a few conditions to move straight to black-type company in the Desi Arnaz S. In addition to the jump in company, she was also switching over to the main track and upping the distance by a furlong.

Just like in her maiden, Astute went to the front, but this time she got headed by Private Mission (Into Mischief) to her inside after a :22.21 quarter and the foe had a head on her as the battle unfolded through the half in :45.30. Astute won the war, shaking clear with ease coming off the turn and simply drawing away, taking command with authority to win by 7 1/2 lengths.

“The owners and the manager–Alex Solis, Jr.–told me before I ever saw her that she’s special and it’s kind of held true,” said Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella. “She got a little sick on me in the summer and I had to give her a month off, so that’s why she’s a little late [starting her career]. I only put her in the maiden turf [debut win] because I knew she could do turf and I was afraid a dirt race the next day wouldn’t fill. I expected she’d run well today, but maybe not this well. We’ll think about the [GI] Starlet [S., Dec. 5 at Los Alamitos].”

Baffert-Trained Private Mission Likely Favorite In Desi Arnaz

Charles Chu, a highly successful businessman from Massachusetts who manufactures global positioning systems (GPS), watched his wife Susan have great fun dabbling in the racing game a few years back. So he thought he'd give it a try, too. The first horse he bought was named Drefrong and all he did was win the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Sprint in 2016.

Since then the Chus, who originally hail from Taiwan and who race under the name Baoma Corporation, have gone in with both feet and by all reports are loving it. They now run their own breeding operation and have had fine success with that, too. But they also continue to buy and race horses, like a filly named Private Mission who'll carry their colors Saturday in the featured Desi Arnaz Stakes at Del Mar near San Diego, Calif.

Private Mission was a $750,000 yearling purchase in 2019 who got off on the right foot with a win in her initial start at Santa Anita on October 12 for trainer Bob Baffert. That was a 6 1/2-furlong straight maiden test with Drayden Van Dyke up. For the Arnaz, the daughter of Into Mischief has been made the 9-5 morning line favorite and will have Van Dyke in the boot once again.

The Chus have entered another well-bred and high-priced ($700,000) runner in the Desi Arnaz – Varda, a first-out winner who then was stakes-placed behind star Princess Noor at Santa Anita most recently in the Chandelier Stakes on September 26. She, too, runs out of the Bob Baffert barn and the daughter of Distorted Humor will go postward at 6-1 in the morning line with Abel Cedillo riding.

The pair of bay fillies will take on six rivals in the sixth edition of the stakes, named for the band leader, actor and huge racing fan-owner-breeder who most famously teamed with his wife, Lucille Ball, to give us one of early television's most popular shows – “I Love Lucy.”

Saturday's nine-race card is off and running at 12:30 p.m. Pacific. The Arnaz goes as the 8th race on the program with an approximate off time of 4 p.m.
