Speightstown Filly Romps to ‘Rising Star’ Honors in Fair Grounds Opener

Carribean Caper (f, 3, Speightstown–Checkupfromzneckup, by Dixie Union) kicked off Saturday's loaded GII Risen Star S. card with a 'TDN Rising Star' performance in the lid lifter at Fair Grounds.

The 3-1 chance broke sharply and forced the issue on the outside from second through an opening quarter in :22.24 over the “good” going. Always traveling like the winner, she poked her head in front approaching the quarter pole, and with a shake or two of the reins from Colby Hernandez, took off in a flash to win going away by a geared-down eight lengths over Famous Attraction (Into Mischief).

The four-time winner and stakes-placed Checkupfromzneckup was purchased by breeder WinStar Farm for $825,000 carrying Carribean Caper in utero at the 2017 KEENOV Sale. Her Into Mischief 2-year-old filly brought $600,000 from Stonestreet Stables as a Keeneland September yearling. She had a filly by Tapit in 2020 and was bred back to Quality Road.

Second dam Unbridled Lassie has a well-beaten third-place finish in the GI Coaching Club American Oaks on her resume.

This is the extended female family of Broodmare of the Year Weekend Surprise, dam of the legendary A.P. Indy and Classic winner Summer Squall. MG1SW and two-time highweight Wolfhound is also on Carribean Caper's page.

Ryan: Charlatan In ‘Beast Mode’ Ahead Of Saudi Cup

All eyes are soon to be fixated on American star Charlatan as he heads the market for next Saturday's (Feb. 20) $20 million Saudi Cup at King Abdulaziz Racetrack in greater Riyadh. The striking 4-year-old chestnut colt seeks to stake his claim as the top dirt horse in the world, while also taking home the $10 million first-place prize money. Standing in the Bob Baffert trainee's way will be Brad Cox-conditioned Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1) and Pegasus World Cup (G1) winner Knicks Go, as well as Champions Cup (G1) winner Chuwa Wizard, Al Maktoum Challenge Round 2 (G2) victor Military Law and battle-hardened American G2 winners Tacitus and Sleepy Eyes Todd.

Owned by the team of SF Racing, Starlight Racing, Madaket Stables, Stonestreet Stables, Frederick Hertrich III, John D. Fielding and Golconda Stables, Charlatan has been gingerly campaigned, to say the least, starting four times and crossing the wire first in all. He was disqualified from his six-length drubbing of the G1 Arkansas Derby last May for a medication violation, his third start, but returned seven months later to capture a salty Malibu Stakes (G1) renewal over four graded stakes winners.

Bred by Stonestreet and purchased by SF Bloodstock and Starlight for $700,000 at Keeneland's 2018 September Yearling Sale, the son of Speightstown and Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) third Authenticity has crossed the line ahead of his foes by an average 6.6 lengths per race and has been wowing onlookers in his preparation at Santa Anita Park in California.

“He's in beast mode right now,” said Tom Ryan, principal of SF Racing and SF Bloodstock. “He's happy and healthy. As Speightstowns often do, he's getting better with age. I personally believe he's an enormous talent (and) 2021 will hopefully be a career-defining year for him. Speed and versatility is what separates the good from the great horses and when you see him, you will understand why we reached for him as a yearling.

“This colt was raised on one of the world's finest nurseries, Stonestreet Farm, which in my estimation is one of the leading breeders of the modern era–a trend we're likely to see continue. He is without question the most spectacular of his breed, he moved with incredible efficiency and everything was effortless for him.”

Knicks Go is coming off one-sided performances in both the Breeders' Cup and Pegasus–two races in which he went to the lead and barely saw another horse. From a speed figure standpoint, the pair are quite close, as Knicks Go earned a 108 for his Pegasus win, compared to a 107 for Charlatan's Malibu–both eased up at the finish–and each earned Equibase Speed Figures of 115 for those efforts. The clash between two horses trying to lay claim to the same title is not lost on anyone, much less connections.

“Knicks Go is a sensational racehorse,” Ryan concluded. “He also seems to be improving with time. Two very fast animals with the ability to cruise through very fast fractions will make for a very interesting race.”

The post position draw, which will obviously prove crucial, takes place on site on Wednesday, Feb. 17.

Speightstown Colt Tops First Session Of Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Winter Mixed Sale

Fasig-Tipton's Kentucky Winter Mixed Sale kicked off Monday at the Newtown Paddocks in Lexington, Ky.

A colt by Grade 1 sire Speightstown (Hip 128) topped the session when sold mid-day for $165,000 to Calumet Farm from the consignment of Stuart Morris, agent (video). Speightstown is the sire of 2020 Grade/Group 1 winners Charlatan, Lady Speightspeare, Echo Town, and Mozu Superflare.

The chestnut colt is out of Royal Ancestry, dam of stakes placed winner More Royalty. Royal Ancestry is a full-sister to Grade 1 winner Awesome Humor, herself the dam of stakes winner Thetrashmanscoming. The immediate family includes Grade 1 winners Emcee and Constitution. Hip 128 was bred in Kentucky by Highclere Inc.

The session's top broodmare prospect came in the form of Shippy (Hip 166), who sold for $130,000 to St Elias Stables from the consignment of Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent. A 4-year-old stakes-winning and graded stakes-placed daughter of Midshipman, Shippy is from the immediate family of Grade/Group 1 winners Wild Rush, Hayil, and Shalaa. Shippy won twice in seven starts for owners Reeves Thoroughbred Racing, R. A. Hill Stable, and Joseph E. Besecker and trainer George Weaver, and earned $121,400.

Additional six-figure sales included two well-bred broodmare prospects:

  • American Dream (Hip 306), a 4-year-old winning daughter of American Pharoah purchased for $105,000 by Board Shorts Stables from the consignment of Bridie Harrison, agent for Peter E. Blum Thoroughbreds. A half-sister to graded stakes winner Dancing Solo, American Dream is out of a full sister to multiple Grade 1 winning millionaire Voodoo Dancer from the family of Grade 1 winner Pool Play.
  • Pakhet (Hip 62), a 5-year-old graded stakes placed winner by Cairo Price purchased for $100,000 by Peachtree Racing Stable from the consignment of Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent. Pakhet hails from the family of Group 1 winner Amadeus Wolf.

During the first session, 207 horses changed hands for a total of $3,956,300. The average was $19,113, up slightly from $18,718 during the first session in 2020. The median held steady at $8,000 compared to last year. The RNA rate was 21.5 percent, compared to 28.8% during the first session in 2020.

Session 1 results are available online. Session 2 will begin Tuesday at 10 a.m.

Speightstown Colt Tops Fasig-Tipton Winter Mixed Opener

A yearling colt by Speightstown (hip 128) brought the top price during Monday's opening session of the Fasig-Tipton Winter Mixed Sale when bringing a final bid of $165,000 from Calumet Farm. Consigned by Stuart Morris, the yearling was one of four offerings to bring six figures during the day.

In all, 207 horses sold Monday for a gross of $3,956,300. The average was $19,113 and the median was $8,000. The buy-back rate for the session was 21.6%.

“I thought the activity today was very encouraging,” said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning, Jr. “A lot of horses got moved at fair prices. It was a fairly consistent marketplace with no real surprises. There was significant demand for what were perceived to be the quality offerings and there was reasonable trade for the less expensive offerings. I'm not going to say it was crazy, but there was activity.”

The results remained fairly consistent with the opening session of the 2020 auction, which saw 180 head sell for $3,369,200 for an average of $18,718 and a median of $8,000. The buy-back rate for that session was 28.9%.

“I feel like it's a very fair market,” Morris said. “I don't know that I would call it robust or electric, but it's a very fair market. For what I walked up there with, I feel like my results were what they should have been. I got tough with a couple, but I've had several RNA's sold after the fact today, so I think it's a very healthy and fair market.”

Morris consigned Monday's session topper on behalf of his father Jeffry Morris's Highclere, which bred the yearling.

“He's a lovely colt with a lot of future in him,” Morris said. “He's a late April foal and had all of the right parts and pieces. He's very athletic with a good walk and great balance. He was good and correct, but he was definitely going to be a horse with a lot of improvement and growth in him because of his birthday. We were happy with the result and very flattered that an operation like Calumet bought him from us. We are wishing them the best of luck and we're hoping they can make him one of their stakes horses.”

The colt is out of Royal Ancestry (Distorted Humor), a full-sister to Grade I winner Awesome Humor and the dam of stakes-placed More Royalty (More Than Ready). Stuart Morris signed the ticket to acquire the then-11-year-old mare for $9,000 at the 2019 OBS Winter Mixed Sale.

“She was a beautiful mare with a great pedigree under her and some nice production,” Morris said of that purchase. “But she had had some production history issues around the time that we purchased her. We spoke to the folks taking care of her and felt that it was something we could manage and we got her bought for a fair price because of her production history. We got her home and she's just been an absolute star for us. She had this foal late last year and we didn't breed her back just because it was a late cover. She is back on the books this year and I believe she's going to go to Bolt d'Oro for my father.”

The Fasig-Tipton Winter Mixed Sale continues with what is expected to be a lively final session Tuesday.

“We've got a really nice group of horses to sell tomorrow,” Browning said Monday evening. “There are some high-quality offerings in the supplement and I think we'll have some fireworks tomorrow. And we'll have some really nice horses throughout the day.”

Bidding at Newtown Paddocks begins Tuesday at 10 a.m.
