Notable US-Breds in Japan: July 24, 2021

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this weekend running at Hakodate and Niigata Racecourses:

Saturday, July 24, 2021
1st-HAK, ¥9,680,000 ($88k), Maiden, 2yo, 1800mT
FIFTY CHEVY (c, 2, Tapit–Stopchargingmaria, by Tale of the Cat), a debut fourth going this distance at Tokyo June 13 (video, gate 2), attracted a final bid of $825K last fall at Keeneland September from Yuji Hasegawa, the same owner who gave $1.5 million for Vanishing Point, a full-brother to two-time Eclipse Award winner Unique Bella, at the same auction 12 months prior. Winner of the 2014 GI CCA Oaks and GI Alabama S. for owner Mike Repole, Stopchargingmaria was a $3.15-million buyback at that year's FTKNOV sale before being purchased privately by Louise and Kiki Courtelis' Town and Country Farms. Upset winner of the 2015 GI Breeders' Cup Distaff, the mare remained in training through her 5-year-old season and was knocked down to Three Chimneys for $2.8 million at FTKNOV in 2016. She was most recently acquired by Whisper Hill Farm for $4.4 million with this foal in utero at the 2018 FTKNOV sale. Three-year-old filly Stillchargingmaria (Pioneerof the Nile), a $1.9-million graduate of FTKNOV and her dam's first produce, won her maiden at Lone Star Park this past April. B-Three Chimneys Farm LLC & Whisper Hill Farm LLC (KY)

5th-HAK, ¥13,400,000 ($122k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1700m
POISON ARROW (c, 2, Arrogate–Crosswinds, by Storm Cat) fetched $750K at last year's Keeneland September sale, making him the most expensive of 41 of the late stallion (by Unbridled's Song)'s first-crop yearlings to sell (from 59 through the ring) in 2020. The Mar. 31 foal is a half-brother to $725K KEESEP grad Current (Curlin), a Grade III winner on turf as a juvenile, and to Weep No More (Mineshaft), who upset the 2016 GI Central Bank Ashland S. The chestnut's granddam is Juddmonte's Flute (Seattle Slew), winner of the 2001 GI Kentucky Oaks and GI Alabama S. and subsequently the dam of Filimbi (Mizzen Mast), a Grade III winner and four times placed in Grade I company on the grass. “We were really happy when he was so well accepted,” Hinkle Farms' Henry Hinkle told the TDN's Brian DiDonato after the colt's sale. “We got a lot of compliments on him. He's one of the nicest colts we've ever brought up here to sell.” Filimbi is also responsible for a member of Arrogate's first crop, the 2-year-old colt Calloway Peak, who is in training at Saratoga. B-Hinkle Farms (KY)

6th-NII, ¥13,400,000 ($122k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1200m
FUJIN SHOJO (f, 2, Speightstown–Big Raven {Ire}, by Fastnet Rock {Aus}), a $235K KEESEP acquisition, is sadly the lone produce of her dam, a daughter of GSW Devil By Design (Medaglia d'Oro), who produced GISW Competitionofideas to the cover of Speightstown in 2015. The progeny of the WinStar stallion have long been coveted in Japan, as he is the sire to date of 33 winners from 37 starters, including GISW mare Mozu Superflare; Matera Sky, a Group 3 winner at home, runner-up in the 2019 G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen and twice an unlucky loser of the Saudi Sprint; and three additional black-type winners. B-John D Gunther Eurowest Bloodstock & Tony Chedraoui (KY)

Charlatan Retired to Hill ‘n’ Dale

Multiple Grade I-winning 'TDN Rising Star' Charlatan (Speightstown) has been retired from racing and will take up stud duty at Hill 'n' Dale at Xalapa, Hill 'n' Dale announced Thursday.

Bred by Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings LLC, the imposing chestnut, out of GI Breeders' Cup Distaff-placed Authenticity (Quiet American), sold as the second-highest priced colt for his sire at the 2018 Keeneland September Yearling Sale at $700,000. Purchased by SF Bloodstock/Starlight West, the colt raced for owners SF Racing LLC, Starlight Racing, Madaket Stables LLC, Stonestreet Stables LLC, Frederick Hertrich, III, John D. Fielding and Golconda Stables.

Charlatan showed his brilliance on debut when running away to a 5 3/4-length victory, earning his 'Rising Star status'. He later romped in the GI Arkansas Derby and GI Runhappy Malibu S. before suffering his lone defeat when running second in the Saudi Cup in his final start. He retires with a record of 5-4-1-0 and earnings of $4,047,200; his four wins were by a combined 26 1/2 lengths.

“Horses with Charlatan's immense ability combined with superior pedigree, conformation, depth of female family and star-quality appeal are a very rare commodity,” said John G. Sikura, President of Hill 'n' Dale. “He is one of the most talented horses I have seen run who combines world class sprinter/miler speed with the ability to carry it around two turns. He is a striking individual who should impart size, substance, balance, and brilliance to his foals. It is an honor to have Charlatan set the standard of excellence as the first stallion whose career we launch here at Hill 'n' Dale at Xalapa.”

“We're very proud of everything Charlatan accomplished in his brief but brilliant career: He's one of the most perfect physical specimens to come to stud in recent times and there's no doubt he will be supported accordingly. On behalf of the SF racing partners we wish John and the team at Hill 'n' Dale the very best,” said managing partner Tom Ryan.

A stud fee will be announced at a later time. Charlatan will arrive at Hill 'n' Dale at Xalapa this Friday, June 25 at 11:30 a.m. Any members of the press wishing to attend should call the Hill 'n' Dale office at 859-255-8290.

Speightstown Colt Graduates in Tremont for Red-Hot Wesley

Overbore benefitted from a key scratch in the morning and a pace duel in the afternoon to graduate and become his 23-year-old sire's 123rd stakes winner in this longstanding event. Third by a half-length behind Baytown Frosty (Frosted) after a rough start at even-money at Keeneland Apr. 18, the dark bay second by a nose on the Churchill turf May 21. He inherited the favorite's role when big-figure debut romper Little Drama (Dramedy) was withdrawn, and he was bothered at the start before moving up to sit third behind runaway leaders Baytown Frosty and Trust Our Journey. He brushed with Kavod when that one tried to force his way out for clear sailing, and kept on steadily over the top to prevail.

“He broke better than the first time I rode him,” said Joel Rosario, who was aboard for Overbore's first start but not his second. “It looked like those two horses were going to keep the speed going. I was setting up in the perfect spot. When I said go, he was there for me. He kept going from there.”

The Wesley Ward barn is hitting at better than 40% at the meet, and also took Thursday's Astoria S. with the dominant Happy Soul (Runhappy).

“When you get winners, it's a good spot to be in,” said former rider David Flores, who is serving as Ward's New York-based assistant. “Wesley and I have known each other almost 30 years. When he was riding, I was riding on the West Coast. We go back to since we were kids. It's a great friendship.”

The winner has a yearling half-sister by More Than Ready. His dam, who races exclusively on synthetic and turf at Woodbine but was effective going both short and long, most recently visited Yoshida (Jpn). Speightstown was also represented by a juvenile winner in the Churchill Downs opener Friday.

Speightstown Firster Overcomes Wide Trip at Churchill

6th-Churchill Downs, $100,000, Msw, 5-23, 3yo/up, f/m, 5 1/2fT, 1:04.51, fm, neck.
TOWN AVENGER (f, 3, Speightstown–Unavenged, by Empire Maker) was crunched into 7-2 at post time from a morning line of 12-1 and was up in the shadow of the post for a good-looking victory at first asking. Settled behind midfield, but trapped out wide after departing the 10 hole, the $380,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase looped rivals four deep on the turn and carried a full head of steam into the lane despite the significant ground loss. The dark bay began to zero in on pacesetting Dynamite Gift (Justin Phillip) entering the final furlong and needed every inch of that final 220 yards before scraping in best. A $50,000 Keeneland September yearling turned $110,000 Keeneland April breezer, Town Avenger's dam won five of her 16 career starts on the competitive Japan Racing Association circuit, graduating over 2000 meters in soft turf at first asking before adding four wins on the dirt at distances from a mile to 2100 meters while earning better than $861,000. Repatriated and bred to Distorted Humor in early 2015, Unavenged–a half-sister to GSW Naughty New Yorker (Quiet American) and SW & MGSP Pupil (Unbridled)–was led out unsold on a bid of $400,000 at that year's Keeneland November sale. Town Avenger is kin to the 2-year-old colt Into Mission (Into Mission) and Unavenged was most recently served by Bolt d'Oro. Sales history: $380,000 Ylg '19 KEESEP. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $57,488.
