Speightstown Colt Soars To Debut Win At Meydan

FALCON OF ARABIA (c, 3, Speightstown–Lawn Party {SP-US}, by Medaglia d'Oro) made a winning debut over the main track on Friday. The colt led pillar-to-post and coasted home to win by 1 1/4 lengths. He was pressed by Auto Bahn (Arg) (Asiatic Boy {Arg}) the entire way around. It was 10 1/4 lengths back to the third-place horse, King Of Luck (GB) (New Bay {GB}). “He has to be nice to do that first time,” said O'Shea of the Falcon Racing Team-owned colt. “He has a nice temperament, a good pedigree and he was very professional. He was getting a weight pull from the top horse [Auto Bahn] but he'd had a run and we hadn't.” After selling twice as a yearling, the chestnut was offered by Top Line Sales at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale and caught the eye of trainer Bhupat Seemar after breezing an eight of a mile in :10 3/5. Falcon Of Arabia is a half-brother to Stellar Agent (More Than Ready), who was third in both the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf and the GII Miss Grillo S., as well as the stakes-winning Anaconda (Pioneerof The Nile). His dam was covered by Epicenter last spring. Second dam Fiery Pursuit (Carson City) won the GII Louisville Breeders' Cup S., while third dam Engaging (Private Account) was a half-sister to the outstanding Eclipse Champion Juvenile Filly Flanders (Seeking The Gold), who would go on to produced Eclipse Champion 3-Year-Old Filly Surfside to the cover of Seattle Slew. Friday Insights: Mendelssohn Filly Steps To The Rostrum For Oaklawn Debut

1st-OP, $115K, Msw, 3yo, f, 1 1/16m, 1:30 p.m. ET.
Under the baton of Ken McPeek, MIDSUMMER MARCH (Mendelssohn) debuts for Walking L Thoroughbreds. The dark bay initially sold to Sycamore Hall for $280,000 at the 2021 Keeneland November Sale before hammering down for $425,000 during the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select Sale, which was the highest priced yearling for her sire in 2022.

Bred by David Fennelly's Mountmellick Farm, the filly is out of GIII Torrey Pines S. winner Munny Spunt (Munnings), who sold for $340,000 at Fasig-Tipton Winter Mixed Sale in foal to Justify, subsequently died but not before foaling a colt named Just Munny. Midsummer March's dam is a half-sister to MGSW Blues Street and GSP Beale Street, both by Street Cry (Ire).

Also set for her first start is Cypress Creek Equine's Off the Lam (Curlin). Trained by Fausto Gutierrez, the homebred is out Argentinian multiple group stakes winning mare Sarasota (Arg) (Luhuk), who is responsible for GII Honeymoon H. heroine Sarah's Secret (Leroidesanimaux {Brz}) and GI Carter H. victor Salutos Amigos (Salute the Sarge). With the same Hard Spun-Speightstown cross as GI Breeders' Cup Sprint champ Aloha West, firster Refuel makes his inaugural trip to the post for Repole and St. Elias. A $550,000 Keeneland September buy, the chestnut was the second-highest priced Hard Spun yearling in 2022.

The Todd Pletcher trainee is out of SW Quick Flip who went to Spendthrift Farm for $230,000 at the 2017 Keeneland November Sale. At the time, she was carrying GSW/GISP Following Sea (Runhappy), who incidently was third to Aloha West at the Breeders' Cup.

The dam of GSP Gimmick (Into Mischief), Quick Flip is a half-sister to MGSP/SW Qahira (Cairo Prince) and MGSP/MSW Factor It In (The Factor). TJCIS PPS

First Foal Arrives By Gainesway’s GISW Olympiad

GISW Olympiad (Speightstown) has his first foal–a filly–who arrived Jan. 18, Gainesway Farm said in a Thursday release.

Out of the mare, Sophie Sophie (Unbridled's Song), a half-sister to GISW and millionaire Seattle Smooth (Quiet American), the filly was bred by Dr. Oscar Benavides and born at his Montesacro Farm.

“I am very happy with my filly,” said Dr. Benavides. “She looks racy and has great conformation as we expected being by Olympiad.”

Olympiad, a five-time graded stakes winner, posted eight wins in 13 career starts for earnings of $3,027,560 for trainer Bill Mott and owners Grandview Equine, Cheyenne Stables and LNJ Foxwoods.

Winner of the 2022 GI Jockey Club Gold Cup S., Olympiad also delivered a track-record setting performance over 1 1/16 miles in the GIII Mineshaft S. and added wins in the GII New Orleans Classic S., GII Stephen Foster S., GII Alysheba S.

In the GI Breeders' Cup Classic, Olympiad rallied down the Keeneland stretch to finish second behind Horse of the Year Flightline (Tapit). He earned triple-digit Beyer Speed Figures on eight occasions with victories from seven furlongs to 1 1/4 miles.

Olympiad stands for $35,000 LFSN.

Sunday Insights: Pair Of Pletcher Firsters Do Battle On The Gulfstream Grass

Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher has a pair of newly-minted 3-year-old fillies heading to the post for their debuts over the turf in the Sunday finale in Hallandale.

First, EL MEGEETH (Constitution) makes her first start for Shadwell Stable. Bred by Three Chimneys, the $750,000 Keeneland September purchase is out of Amour d'Ete (Tiznow), who Borges Torrealba Holdings acquired as the third topper at the same sale back in 2013 for $1.75 million. Her most notable produce is GI Preakness S. champ Early Voting (Gun Runner).

Second dam and Canadian 2-year-old champion Silken Cat (Storm Cat) also produced Amour d'Ete's full-sister, MGSW Irap, plus recently deceased sire of sires Speightstown (Gone West) and the dam of G1 Al Maktoum Challenge Round 3 victor Capezzano (Bernardini).

Drawn to the extreme outside is the other half of Pletcher's uncoupled entry–Lady Madonna (War Front). A $675,000 Fasig-Tipton Select Yearling Sale buy for Robert and Lawana Low, the SF Bloodstock bred filly is out of GI Central Bank Ashland S. heroine Rosalind (Broken Vow). She had a 2-year-old colt by Twirling Candy sell to Willie Browne for $200,000 at the Keeneland September Sale and sent to Ireland, and a yearling filly by Tapit go for $450,000 to Sycamore Hall Thoroughbreds at Keeneland's November Sale.
