Woodbine: Dreaming Of Drew A Dream Come True For Minshall And Co.

Dreaming of Drew, a two-year-old daughter of Speightster, chases her first added-money title in the $250,000 Princess Elizabeth Stakes, one of two ($100,000 Overskate) features on Saturday's 11-race card at Woodbine.

Eight starters are slated to go postward in the 75th renewal of the Princess Elizabeth, a 1 1/16-mile main track race for Canadian-bred 2-year-old fillies.

Trained by Barbara Minshall, who has 380 career victories, Dreaming of Drew arrives at Saturday's engagement off a fourth-place finish in the Natalma Stakes (G1T) on Sept. 20 at Woodbine.

“She's training well,” said Minshall. “I'll make a couple of little equipment changes on her. I know she likes the synthetic track here. I just hope she settles well for a two-turn race and I expect a pretty good effort from her.”

It was the second straight stakes appearance for the Hoolie Racing Stable chestnut who lost by a nose to Alda in the Catch a Glimpse Stakes (6 ½ furlongs on the turf) on Aug. 23.

Bred by WinStar Farm, Dreaming of Drew launched her career on June 13 in a 4 ½-furlong test over the Toronto oval Tapeta. Sent off at 5-1, she put in a determined stretch run to finish second, 2 ½ lengths behind the winner.

Next time out, the Ontario-bred broke her maiden via a six-length romp as the 7-5 choice.

Minshall, Canada's champion trainer in 1996, is confident her young star will be up for Saturday's test.

“She is [still learning]. She's a very big horse and she has a ton of ability. That goes without question. She just has to totally get it all together, but she's a horse with a bright future. Hopefully, we can finish this season off with her having a nice race in the Princess Elizabeth, and then give her a nice break.”

Bred and owned by Yvonne Schwabe, Bequia, a dark bay daughter of Vancouver (AUS), will make her stakes debut on Saturday. Bodacious Miss goes after her second win in as many starts, Curlin's Catch, a daughter of Curlin, finished second in her career bow, Dance With Destiny looks to improve off a sixth-place finish in her debut, El Bayern tries for her second straight added-money crown after winning the Muskoka Stakes on August 30, Emmeline, trained by John Mattine, will go for her first win in what is her third (stakes) start, and Victorian Queen Stakes champion Il Malocchio is set to go postward in her fourth career start.

Princess Elizabeth-winning fillies Nipissing (2012), Roan Inish (2009), Ginger Gold (2001), Dancethruthedawn (2000), Deputy Jane West (1992) and Par Excellence (1979) all went on to win the Woodbine Oaks the following year.

The Overskate Stakes has drawn 10 hopefuls. Set for 7 ½ furlongs on the Inner Turf, the Ontario Sired race for three-year-olds & up includes last year's Overskate champion Dixie's Gamble (6-1-0 from 12 starts), who will make his season's debut on Saturday for trainer Josie Carroll, 2020 Vice Regent Stakes winner Not So Quiet (5-0-1 from 11 starts), multiple stakes winner Red Cabernet and (8-3-2 from 30 starts), and multiple stakes placed Royal Laser (5-4-5 from 26 starts).

The Princess Elizabeth is slated as race nine and the Overskate goes as race eight. First post time is 1:10 p.m. Fans can watch and wager on all the action via HPIbet.com.

Speightstown, Constitution Headline WinStar Farm’s 2021 Stallion Roster; Tiznow Pensioned From Stud Duty

WinStar Farm has set 2021 stud fees for its 22-stallion roster, headed by Speightstown who will stand for $90,000 S&N and leading second-crop sire Constitution who will stand for $85,000 S&N.

WinStar will further bolster its roster for the upcoming breeding season by welcoming new stallions Improbable, Laoban, Tom's d'Etat, Global Campaign, and Promises Fulfilled. WinStar has also announced that considering the current circumstances facing the industry that fees for most of the stallions on its roster will be reduced.

“During these times we felt it appropriate to drop 75 percent of our fees,” said Elliott Walden, WinStar's president, CEO, and racing manager. “We gave two horses a bump—Speightstown, the co-leading sire this year with three Grade 1 winners and fourth general leading sire, and Constitution who has over-delivered at every point of his career. As always, our mission is to offer breeders stallions of the highest quality. We are excited about Laoban joining our roster and three very live horses in the Breeders' Cup Classic joining our roster for the 2021 breeding season.”

Added Liam O'Rourke, WinStar's director of bloodstock services, “We are offering breeders the opportunity to secure a limited number of seasons to Laoban, Outwork, and Improbable before the Breeders' Cup, with their prices subject to change based on their Breeders' Cup results.”

Improbable, City Zip's only four-time Grade 1 winner, has rattled off three consecutive Grade 1 scores in 2020 and is the early favorite for next month's $6-million Breeders' Cup Classic. He was a runaway winner of the Grade 1 Hollywood Gold Cup at Santa Anita, earning a 105 Beyer and then shipped to Saratoga and dominated the historic G1 Whitney Stakes, earning a 106 Beyer. Most recently, he romped by 4 1/2 lengths in the G1 Awesome Again Stakes at Santa Anita, defeating champion Maximum Security and earning a 108 Beyer.

Tom's d'Etat, by sire of sires Smart Strike, is also a top contender for the Breeders' Cup Classic for G M B Racing. He registered a brilliant 4 1/4-length victory in this year's G2 Stephen Foster Stakes, running a career-best 109 Beyer. Tom's d'Etat covered 1 1/8 miles in an eye-catching 1:47.30, geared down in the late stages. The final time came within a whisker of Victory Gallop's track and stakes record of 1:47.28 set in 1999.

The Al Stall trainee has recorded 10 triple-digit Beyers, including nine in a row in an illustrious career. Tom's d'Etat is out of the stakes-winning and multiple stakes-placed Giant's Causeway mare Julia Tuttle who is out of a full sister to Pacific Classic (G1) winner and leading sire Candy Ride (ARG).

Global Campaign, a son of two-time Horse of the Year Curlin, heads to the Breeders' Cup Classic following back-to-back graded stakes scores and is a winner in three of four starts in 2020 for WinStar Farm and Sagamore Farm. He emulated his sire by capturing the G1 Woodward Handicap in his most recent start, earning a career-best 104 Beyer for trainer Stanley Hough. The Woodward was his second straight graded win following a victory in the G3 Monmouth Cup Stakes in his prior outing.

Promises Fulfilled won five graded stakes at distances from six furlongs to 1 1/16 miles—winning the G1 H. Allen Jerkens Stakes, G2 Fountain of Youth Stakes, G2 John A. Nerud Stakes, G2 Phoenix Stakes, and G3 Amsterdam Stakes, competing exclusively in graded stakes company following his first two victories at two. In front in 15-of-17 starts no matter the distance, Promises Fulfilled competed in 15 graded stakes, including eight Grade 1s, banking $1,455,530 in a stellar career for trainer Dale Romans.

The upcoming breeding season—with the influx of Grade 1 winners embarking on their stallion careers at WinStar—will also mark a changing of the guard. Tiznow, a multiple champion on the racetrack and an influential stallion who has made an indelible mark on the breed, will be retired from stud duty. Still the only two-time winner of the Breeders' Cup Classic, Tiznow was a champion on the racetrack and in the breeding shed, siring numerous elite runners.

Known as “The Big Horse Sire,” Tiznow is the sire of 15 Grade 1 winners that have won many of the world's most prestigious events. He is the sire of Dubai World Cup winner Well Armed, G1 Travers Stakes winner Colonel John, and Breeders' Cup winners Folklore, winner of the 2005 Juvenile Fillies and Tourist, winner of the 2016 Mile. He has even made his mark as an emerging broodmare sire of 34 stakes winners, including multiple Grade 1 winner Tiz the Law.

Fees with an asterisk are good through Breeders' Cup and are subject to change pending results. For Tom's d'Etat and Global Campaign, fees will be announced after the Breeders' Cup.

Juveniles By Candy Ride, Uncaptured, Empire Maker, Share Fastest Quarter At OBS October Under Tack Show

A filly by Candy Ride, a gelding by Uncaptured and a colt by Empire Maker sped quarters in : 21 1/5 to share honors for the fastest work at the distance at the Under Tack Show for the 2-year-olds and Horses of Racing Age section of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's 2020 October Sale.

Hip No. 2, consigned by Top Line Sales LLC, Agent, is a 2-year-old bay filly by Candy Ride out of stakes placed Garnet Crystals, by Lion Heart, a half-sister to graded stakes winner Rerun.
Hip No. 35, a 2-year-old bay gelding by Uncaptured consigned by Ocala Stud, is out of stakes winner Shining Moment, by Yes It's True,
Hip No. 39, a 2-year-old bay colt by Empire Maker also consigned by Top Line, is a half-brother to graded stakes winner Majestic River out of graded stakes-placed stakes winner Tempus Fugit, by Alphabet Soup.

Hip No. 17, a 2-year-old bay colt by Kitten's Joy consigned by Top Line Sales LLC, Agent, turned in a quarter in :21 2/5. He's out of Magicalcarpetride, by Smart Strike, a half sister to grade one stakes winner Smooth Roller.

The fastest three-eighths by a 2-year-old was by Hip No. 44, a colt by Anchor Down consigned by Navas Equine, Agent, who stopped the timer in :33 2/5. He's a half brother to stakes placed Tale Twister out of Abounding Love, by Tale of the Cat.

Hip No. 56, Annette's Humor, a 4-year-old chestnut filly by Shackleford consigned by consigned by Top Line Sales LLC, Agent, breezed the day's fastest three eighths, clocked in :33 1/5. She's a half-sister to stakes winner Sweet Juana out of Whimsical Miss, by Distorted Humor.

Hip No. 50, a 2-year-old bay filly by Speightster consigned by Julie Davies LLC, Agent, worked the session's fastest eighth, stopping the timer in :10 1/5. She's out of Bern Legacy, by Bernstein, a daughter of graded stakes placed stakes winner Penny Marie.

Hip No. 58, Slashing, a 2-year-old colt by Nyquist consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent, broke his maiden impressively in maiden special weight company this past Wednesday at Gulfstream Park West, leading all the way and winning by 5-1/4 lengths. The bay colt is out of graded stakes placed Proud Pearl, by Proud Citizen, a full sister to champion Proud Spell.

Speightster Filly Fastest at OBS Under-Tack Show

A filly by Speightster turned in the fastest furlong work of Sunday’s under-tack show ahead of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s October Sale. The juvenile (hip 50), consigned by Julie Davies, covered the distance in :10 1/5. She is out of Bern Legacy (Bernstein), a half-sister to graded placed Centrique (Malibu Moon). A $55,000 Keeneland November purchase, the bay filly RNA’d for $70,000 at last year’s Fasig-Tipton October sale.

Three 2-year-olds shared the day’s fastest quarter-mile work: a filly by Candy Ride (Arg) (hip 2, :21 1/5) consigned by Top Line Sales; a gelding by Uncaptured (hip 35, :21 1/5) consigned by Ocala Stud; and a colt by Empire Maker (hip 39, :21 1/5) also consigned by Top Line Sales.

The 4-year-old filly, Annette’s Humor (Shackleford) (hip 56), turned in the day’s fastest three furlongs, covering the distance in :33 1/5. A colt by Anchor Down (hip 44) had the fastest three-furlong work (:33 2/5) by a 2-year-old.

Bradley Thoroughbreds’ Slashing (Nyquist) enters the October sale off a 5 1/4-length maiden score at Gulfstream Park West Oct. 7. The 2-year-old colt is consigned as hip 58 with de Meric Sales.

The October sale begins Tuesday at noon with an offering of 59 2-year-olds and horses of racing age followed by an offering of selected yearlings. The auction continues Wednesday with a session of open yearlings which begins at 10:30 a.m.
