Speightster Filly Impresses at Oaklawn

9th-Oaklawn, $84,000, Msw, 1-23, 3yo, f, 6f, 1:10.83, ft, 3 3/4 lengths.
HOT AND SULTRY (f, 3, Speightster–Hot Water, by Medaglia d'Oro) burst out of the gate at Oaklawn Sunday with her mind on running and never looked back, toying with the field for a facile 3 3/4-length score. The dark bay was sent as the 8-5 choice and kept a narrow advantage through :21.97 and :46.21 splits. She changed leads on cue coming off the turn, batted off her rivals, and drew clear in the stretch, easing up late as Little Mombo (Into Mischief), who had gotten within a head two furlongs from home, chased her to the wire. Her final time of 1:10.83 for the six furlongs was significantly faster than the earlier division on the card, won by Peace Peddler (Gun Runner) in a similar trip, by the identical margin, in a final time of 1:11.73. Hot and Sultry came into the race with the highest previous Beyer–77–in the field, earned in her Dec. 18, runner-up debut over track and trip. Peace Peddler had finished third to her in that joint debut. A half to Tracksmith (Street Sense), SW & GSP, $282,133; Hot and Sultry claims as her third dam 2001 champion 3-year-old filly and GISW Xtra Heat (Dixieland Heat). The winner's dam, Hot Water, has a 2-year-old colt by Runhappy that brought $7,000 at Keeneland September from Adco Farms and a yearling filly by Omaha Beach that hammered to The Elkstone Group for $160,000 at Keeneland November. She was bred back to War of Will. Sales History: $475,000 Ylg '20 KEESEP. Lifetime Record: 2-1-1-0, $67,200. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.

The first of two strong-looking groups of sophomore fillies line up here in Hot Springs. Brad Cox-trained second timer Firewolves (Practical Joke) gets the tepid morning-line nod coming off a runner-up outing over track and trip Dec. 3 that earned her a 75 Beyer Speed Figure. The $140,000 Keeneland September yearling is half to MGSP Tap for Luck (Tapit) and to the dam of GSW/GISP Jeltrin (Tapizar).

Peace Peddler (Gun Runner) set a solid pace in her unveiling Dec. 18 before finishing third behind a pair of pricey foes. A $200,000 KEESEP pick-up, she is out of Canadian champion older mare and MGSW Embur's Song (Unbrided's Song) from the family of Classic winner Exaggerator (Curlin).

Xtreme Gem (Tapit), a daughter of GISW juvenile Gomo (Uncle Mo), also makes her second start. The $475,000 FTFMAR RNA and $625,000 Fasig Midlantic seller (:10 1/5) was fourth after taking some money in an off-the-turfer at Keeneland in October (re-opposing Madelyn's Magic {Hard Spun} was second that day). Among the noteworthy newcomers signed on is Courtlandt Farm's $500,0000 FTKSEL purchase Campaigning (Nyquist). The Steve Asmussen pupil is half to GSP Aurelia Garland (Constitution) out of a daughter of 2002 GII Alcibiades S. winner Westerly Breeze (Gone West).

Speightster Relocated To Northern Dawn Stables In Ontario For 2022

Speightster, a leading second-crop sire, has been purchased by Jay and Christine Hayden's Saintsbury Farms to stand at Northern Dawn Stables Inc., Hillsburgh, Ontario, Canada, in a deal brokered by Chad Schumer of Schumer Bloodstock. He will stand for C$6,500.

The son of Speightstown ended 2021 as a top-five North American second-crop sire by prize money thanks to the earners of almost $4.3 million and within the top-two by winners (71).

In terms of Ontario, Speightster ranks as the second-leading sire overall and the leading stallion by number of winners.

“Canadian breeders will surely take note of the tremendous opportunity Speightster affords,” said Chad Schumer. “He is among the leading second crop sires, behind only Not This Time, Nyquist, Frosted and Runhappy, and ahead of Laoban, Upstart, Outwork, Protonico, Brody's Cause and Mshawish among others.

“He immediately steps in as the second-ranked stallion in Ontario with bigger things to come from such as stakes winners Aubrieta, Dreaming of Drew and Tough To Tame, second in the Grade 3 Iroquois at Churchill Downs and a Kentucky Derby contender.”

Speightster has already made an impact in Canada as the sire of Aubrieta, winner of the Glorious Song Stakes at Woodbine, and Dreaming Of Drew, winner of the Princess Elizabeth Stakes at Woodbine.

In two crops of racing age, he is also the sire of stakes winners Door Buster, Tantrum and That Kenney Kid as well as the Grade 3-placed Tough To Tame.

Speightster's racing career was one of brilliance, with a seven-length debut win at Keeneland, backed up with a 3 1/2-length victory over Grade 2 winner Joking in his next start in a Belmont Park allowance.

He remained undefeated in his third start when capturing the G3 Dwyer Stakes at Belmont Park over Grade 1 winner Texas Red.

A son of leading sire Speightstown, Speightster's family is one of Canadian royalty; out of the Danzig mare Dance Swiftly, he is a grandson of Canadian champion Classy 'N Smart, also the dam of Grade 1 winner and leading sire Smart Strike as well as Canadian Horse of the Year and Hall of Famer Dance Smartly (dam of Canadian champion Dancethruthedawn).

Chad Schumer added: “In terms of pedigree, all one can say is wow, by leading sire and sire of sires Speightstown and out of a Danzig half-sister to Smart Strike.”

Speightster will stand alongside Reload at Northern Dawn Stables Inc.

Speightster Relocating to Ontario

Speightster (Speightstown–Dance Swiftly, by Danzig) has been purchased by Jay and Christine Hayden's Saintsbury Farms to stand the 2022 season at Northern Dawn Stables Inc., Hillsburgh, Ontario, Canada in a deal brokered by Chad Schumer of Schumer Bloodstock. A top-five second-crop sire in 2021 with progeny earnings approaching $4.3 million, the 'TDN Rising Star' previously stood at WinStar Farm. He will command a fee of C$6,500 this term.

“Canadian breeders will surely take note of the tremendous opportunity Speightster affords,” said Chad Schumer. “He is among the leading second-crop sires, behind only Not This Time, Nyquist, Frosted and Runhappy, and ahead of Laoban, Upstart, Outwork, Protonico, Brody's Cause and Mshawish among others.

“He immediately steps in as the second-ranked stallion in Ontario with bigger things to come from such as [Canadian] stakes winners Aubrieta and Dreaming of Drew and Tough To Tame, second in the GIII Iroquois at Churchill Downs and a Kentucky Derby contender.”

Speightster won the first three starts of his four-race career, capped by a clear victory in the 2015 GIII Dwyer S. His extremely strong pedigree will be particularly familiar to Canadian breeders, as his dam is a full-sister to Canadian Horse of the Year Dance Smartly from an extremely deep Sam-Son family of Canadian champions and Classic winners like Classy 'n Smart,  Dancethruthedawn, Scatter the Gold, Say the Word, Hello Seattle and El Tormenta, top sire and GISW Smart Strike, et al.

“In terms of pedigree, all one can say is 'Wow,'” Schumer added. “By leading sire and sire of sires Speightstown and out of a Danzig half-sister to Smart Strike.”
