Quality Road Colt Tops OBS Spring Sale’s Second Session

Hip No. 381, a son of Quality Road consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent, went to Speedway Stables, LLC, for $1.5 million to top the second session of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's 2021 Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training.

The bay colt, who breezed an eighth in :10 flat at Tuesday's Under Tack session, is a half brother to stakes placed Coffee Crush out of graded stakes winner Wasted Tears, by Najran.

Hip No. 463, a daughter of Arrogate consigned by Mayberry Farm, Agent, was sold to Katsumi Yoshida for $1 million. The gray or roan filly, whose eighth in :10 flat was co-fastest at the distance at Wednesday's under tack session, is out of graded stakes winner Amen Hallelujah by Montbrook, a daughter of stakes winner Sara's Success.

Mike Talla, West Point Thoroughbreds, L.E.B., Agent, paid $750,000 for Hip No. 490, a son of Arrogate consigned by Wavertree Stables, Inc. (Ciaran Dunne), Agent. The gray or roan colt, who breezed an eighth in a co-fastest :10 flat on Wednesday, is a half brother to millionaire grade one stakes winner Heart to Heart out of Ask the Question, by Silver Deputy.

Hip No. 605, a son of Union Rags consigned by Top Line Sales LLC, Agent, went to Repole Stable, Inc. for $750,000. The dark bay or brown colt, who worked a quarter on Wednesday in :20 4/5, is a half brother to stakes placed Champagne Humor out of Champagne Ice, by Roman Ruler, a full sister to Belmont Stakes winner Ruler On Ice.

Hip No. 594, a daughter of Curlin consigned by Wavertree Stables, Inc. (Ciaran Dunne), Agent, was sold to Norman W. Casse for $600,000. The chestnut filly, who worked a co-fastest eighth in :10 flat on Wednesday, is a half sister to stakes winner Checkered Past out of Catch the Flag, by A.P. Indy, a daughter of champion Catch the Ring.

Hip No. 512, a daughter of Maclean's Music consigned by Paul Sharp, Agent, was purchased for $575,000 by Red Baron's Barn & Rancho Temescal. The chestnut filly, whose eighth in :10 flat was Wednesday's co-fastest, is out of Beautified, by Congrats, a daughter of graded stakes winner Makeup Artist.

Hip No. 365, a daughter of Into Mischief consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent, was sold to Mike Ryan, Agent, for $500,000. The bay filly, who breezed an eighth in :10 flat on Tuesday, is out of Versailles Song, by Unbridled's Song, a daughter of grade one stakes winner Versailles Treaty.

Donato Lanni, Agent for Frank Fletcher Racing, paid $490,000 for Hip No. 530, a son of Runhappy consigned by Wavertree Stables, Inc. (Ciaran Dunne), Agent. The dark bay or brown colt, a half brother to graded stakes placed Hardworkcleanlivin out of Bible Belt, by Pulpit, breezed an eighth in a co-fastest :10 flat on Wednesday.

Hip No. 394, a daughter of Upstart consigned by Tom McCrocklin, Agent, was purchased by Spendthrift Farm LLC / Myracehorse.com for $450,000. The dark bay or brown filly, who turned in an Under Tack quarter in :20 4/5 last Tuesday, is out of Who'sbeeninmybed, by The Daddy, a half sister to graded stakes winner Mr. Bowling.

For the day, 181 horses brought a total of $21,056,500 compared with 158 selling for a total of $15,990,000 at last year's second session. The average price was $116,334, up 15% compared to $101,203 in 2021 while the median price was $47,000, compared with $55,000 a year ago. The buyback percentage was 18.5 percent; it was 19 percent last year.

The Spring Sale continues Thursday at 10:30 a.m. Hip No's 609 – 912 will be offered for sale.

American Pharoah Colt Tops Final Session Of Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearling Showcase

The Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearlings Showcase concluded its two-day run in Lexington, Ky. on Thursday with another solid session of sales, led by a seven-figure colt from the third crop of last year's champion first-crop sire American Pharoah.

Speedway Stables purchased the session-topper for $1.25 million from the consignment of Denali Stud, agent.

Offered as Hip 400, the American Pharoah colt is out of the stakes winning Victory Gallop mare Swingit, whose first five starters are all winners, including multiple Grade 1-placed millionaire Neolithic (Harlan's Holiday). This colt is also a half-sibling to Travel Column (Frosted), who broke her maiden impressively on debut at Churchill Downs on Kentucky Oaks day. The session-topper hails from the immediate family of champions Housemaster and Carnuaba.

Hip 400 was bred in Kentucky by Mr. & Mrs. Bayne Welker Jr.

The second-highest price on the day was $800,000 paid for Hip 501, a colt by Into Mischief, last year's champion sire, current leading sire, and sire of Kentucky Derby winner Authentic.

That colt was purchased by Donato Lanni, agent for SF/Starlight/Madaket from the consignment of Indian Creek, agent. Hip 501 is the first foal out of Blind Copy, a full-sister to juvenile stakes winner Lucky Folie, from the immediate family of Grade 1 winners Golden Pheasant and Henley's Joy. Hip 501 was bred in Kentucky by Fifth Avenue Bloodstock.

The sale's overall most expensive offering came during the first session, when Hip 232, a filly by Quality Road out of Irish One Thousand Guineas winner Marvellous sold to Robbie Medina, agent for Joseph Allen, for $1,500,000.

Marvellous, a daughter of Galileo who has already produced a stakes winner in Fort Myers, is out of Group 2 winner You'resothrilling, a full-sister to European Horse of the Year and successful sire Giant's Causeway. Marvellous is a full-sister to Group 1 winners Gleneagles and Happily, as well as to group stakes winners Taj Mahal and Coolmore. The session-topper was bred in Kentucky by Orpendale, Chelston and Wynatt.

The top filly was consigned by Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency, agent.

“One of the greatest compliments you can have is when someone entrusts you with something of value,” said Fasig-Tipton president Boyd Browning on the success of the sale despite the uncertainty brought to the industry by the COVID-19 pandemic. Our commitment to those men and women was that we were going to do everything we possibly could to create the most viable marketplace under the circumstances… I think we did that.

Overall, 348 yearlings changed hands for $61,765,000. The average was $177,486 and the median was $120,000.

“The 'death' of the marketplace has been greatly exaggerated,” Browning said. “There is activity, there is a viable market. It's selective, and it continues to be selective, but there is viability and there is hope.”

In what has been a volatile auction season due to the cancellations and rescheduled sales tied to COVID-19, not to mention the death of senior account executive Dennis Lynch in May, Browning saluted his team for keeping steady in uncharted waters.

“If anybody could have imagined six months ago; no Gulfstream sale, no July yearling sale, no Saratoga sale, no New York-bred sale, that we'd be sitting here having sold over $60 million in horses over the last two days, I think most people would have called B.S. on us,” he said. “They stayed in the buggy with us. There were a lot of days where people would say, 'What are we gonna do?' Hell, I don't know. We're going to continue to try to find the answers and we're going to continue to do the right thing every day. We'll make a decision, we'll try to put our heart and soul in it, and we'll continue to try to do the best that we can. I think, across the board, our team did that.”

Strong Returns, Seven-Figure Sale Topper For Fifth Consecutive Year at Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-Year-Olds In Training Sale

The Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale conducted another strong session on Tuesday to close the 2020 edition of the sale. For the fifth consecutive year, a seven-figure juvenile topped the Timonium, Md., sale.

The sale-topper came during Monday's session, when Hip 118, a colt by record-breaking champion freshman sire Uncle Mo sold for $1.1 million to Donato Lanni, agent for Michael Lund Petersen. The dark bay or brown colt was consigned by Pike Racing, agent. Hip 118 worked an eighth in :10-flat during last week's under tack show. The Virginia-bred 2-year-old is a half-brother to Grade 2 winner Azar out of a winning Mineshaft half-sister to multiple graded stakes winner Woodlander.

A colt by Candy Ride topped the sale's Tuesday session when sold for $875,000 to Gary Young, agent. Offered as Hip 443 by Ciaran Dunne's Wavertree Stables, the bay colt worked an eighth in :10 1/5 seconds during the under tack show. The session-topper is out of the winning Giant's Causeway mare Causara, a daughter of graded stakes winner Lady Belsara.

The sale's top-priced filly sold early during the first session, when a daughter of leading sire Into Mischief sold to Lauren Carlisle, agent for $500,000. Offered as Hip 4 by Hoby and Layna Kight, the bay filly worked a quarter in :21 3/5 seconds during the under tack show. The top filly is out of the graded stakes placed Dixie Chatter mare Global Hottie, from the immediate family of Horse of the Year Alysheba.

Hip 451, a daughter of last year's leading first-crop sire American Pharoah, was the highest-priced filly of Tuesday's session. The dark bay or brown filly was purchased for $325,000 by Speedway Stable from the consignment of Kirkwood Stables, agent for Midway Gallop LLC (video). The New York-bred filly worked a quarter in :22-flat during last week's under tack show. Hip 451 is out of a half-sister to Grade 1 winner and stakes producer Awesome Humor and to Surf Club, dam of Grade 1 winner Emcee and Baffled, who produced current leading second-crop sire Constitution.

Overall, 303 horses sold for a total of $23,572,500, good for an average of $77,797 and a median of $40,000. The sale marked the first time online bidding was available at a Fasig-Tipton auction; more than 50 horses received online bids, and approximately 15 were sold online.
