Speed Boat Beach Prevails In Cecil B. Demille

Stretching out on the grass for the first time, Pegram, Watson and Weitman's Speed Boat Beach (Bayern) gave the Bob Baffert barn a rare graded stakes victory on turf in Sunday's GIII Cecil B. DeMille S. at Del Mar.

Off at 17-10 after touching 6-5 late in the wagering, Speed Boat Beach showed good early speed, but Game Time (Not This Time) speared through at the fence to take up the running into the first turn. Speed Boat Beach settled nicely for this first go at a route of ground and was content to track from second through fractions of :22.82 and a more controlled :47.30 to the half-mile point. Held together into the final three furlongs by Flavien Prat, Speed Boat Beach was asked to quicken past the five-sixteenths and was narrowly in front at the head of the lane. Game Time counterpunched gamely down inside and refused to go down without a fight, but Speed Boat was always doing the better work and went on to an ultimately comfortable victory.

“He broke well and I thought I was going to be on the lead,” said winning jockey Flavien Prat. “But Umberto [Rispoli on Game Time] wanted to go, so we were fine running second. My horse was relaxed and that's what I wanted. When it came time, he went about his business. Two turns, no problem today. Good race for him.”

The $12,000 OBSOCT yearling turned $200,000 OBS April breezer defeated stablemate Hejazi (Bernardini), this year's $3.55-million Fasig-Tipton Midlantic topper, on his 5 1/2-furlong debut over this main track Sept. 10, earning a towering 104 Beyer Speed Figure, and earned his way into the Nov. 4. GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint with a 1 1/4-length success in the Speakeasy S. at Santa Anita Oct. 2. Drawn awkwardly in 11 at Keeneland, he argued a fast early pace, but gave way through the lane to finish 10 1/2 lengths behind Mischief Magic (Ire) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}).

Pedigree Notes:

Speed Boat Beach is the fourth graded winner for GI Breeders' Cup Classic hero Bayern, who stood his first year in South Korea in 2022, having previously served mares at Hill 'n' Dale Farm. One of his 11 stakes winners is KRA Classic and Busan Owners Cup hero Raon the Fighter (Kor).

Speed Boat Beach is out of a daughter of MSW & MGSP Amie's Dini and the female family also includes MSW/GSP Kid Kate (Lemon Drop Kid). Sophia Mia is the dam of a 2-year-old filly by Distorted Humor and a weanling filly by Volatile. She was bought back on a bid of $390,000 in foal to Army Mule at this year's Fasig-Tipton November Sale.

Dams of BC Contenders Among First FTKNOV Supplements

The dams of four Grade I winners, including a pair of 2-year-olds that will be among the favorites for the juvenile dirt races at the upcoming Breeders' Cup meeting at Keeneland, are among the initial supplemental entries to The November Sale to be held at Fasig-Tipton's Newtown Paddocks Sunday, Nov. 6.

Trophy Girl (Warrior's Reward) will be offered by Denali Stud as hip 302. The 9-year-old mare, selling in foal to dual Eclipse Award winner Essential Quality, is the dam of Blazing Sevens (Good Magic), third behind recent GI Claiborne Breeders' Futurity S. hero Forte (Violence) in the GI Hopeful S. in September and most recently the impressive winner of the GI Champagne S. at Aqueduct to secure his spot in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Nov. 5.

Next into the ring will be hip 303, the Paramount Sales-consigned Special Treat (Candy Ride {Arg}). Descending from the Phipps female family of Grade I winners Imagining (Giant's Causeway), Rhythm (Mr. Prospector), Girolamo (A.P. Indy) and Super Saver (Maria's Mon), among others, the 10-year-old was recently represented by Chocolate Gelato (Practical Joke), who earned a spot in the field for the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies courtesy of her victory in the GI Frizette S. at the Big A. Special Treat is offered in foal to GI Met Mile winner Silver State (Hard Spun).

Speed Boat Beach (Bayern) earned a ticket to the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint when taking out the Oct. 2 Speakeasy S. at Santa Anita, and his dam Sophia Mia (Pioneerof the Nile) is cataloged as hip 312 to The November Sale. Consigned by Stuart Morris, agent for Caperlane Farm, the 7-year-old Sophia Mia is carrying to promising first-crop sire Army Mule.

Among the other supplements are:

  • Sheza Smoke Show (hip 300), the dam of GISW 'TDN Rising Star' Princess Noor (Not This Time) in foal to Tapit from the Taylor Made Sales draft;
  • Wait For Nairobi (hip 301), a half-sister to GISW Tell A Kelly pregnant to Constitution and offered by Hartwell Farm;
  • Byrama (GB) (hip 309), dam of GISW Known Agenda (Curlin) and carrying a full-sibling; Lane's End consigns;
  • Duchess of Sussex (hip 310), from the immediate family of GI Cotillion S. romper Society (Gun Runner) and in foal to GI Santa Anita Derby winner Rock Your World, son of Gun Runner's sire Candy Ride (Arg) from Baldwin Bloodstock

Also included in the first intake of supplemental entries are weanlings by Army Mule, Complexity and Kantharos.

The newest additions are available online and will also be included in the Equineline catalogue app. Print versions of these and any further supplemental entries will be available on the sales grounds at sale time.

Bayern Colt Secures His Spot for Juvenile Turf Sprint

Pegram, Watson and Weitman's Speed Boat Beach (Bayern), owner of a gaudy 104 Beyer Speed Figure for his Sept. 10 debut score on the Del Mar dirt over $3.55-million stablemate Hejazi (Bernardini) after blazing a furlong in a bullet :9.3 at OBSMAR, took to the turf with aplomb in Sunday's Speakeasy S. at Santa Anita, earning an automatic berth into the starting gate for the Nov. 4 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint.

Backed like a lock at 2-5 making a rare dirt-to-turf move for Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, the dark bay locked on to even speedier Helladic (Kantharos) early after a slightly awkward break, pounced on that one at the head of the lane and inched clear from him by 1 1/4 lengths, stopping the clock in :55.25. These same connections took the GII Zenyatta S. one race earlier with Midnight Memories (Mastery), and the GI Awesome Again S. on Saturday with Defunded (Dialed In).

Speed Boat Beach is the lone foal to race out of his dam, a daughter of SW & MGSP Amie's Dini (Bandini). The further female family includes MSW Kid Kate (Lemon Drop Kid) and Frank's Honor (Honor Code), an impressive five-length maiden winner at Churchill Downs Oct. 1. Sophia Mia s the dam of a yearling Distorted Humor filly, a weanling filly by Violence and was bred to Army Mule this season.
