Friday’s Speakeasy At Santa Anita To Offer Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint Slot

An impressive first-out winner on dirt, Richard Mandella's Forbidden Kingdom merits top billing on grass in Friday's $100,000 Speakeasy Stakes at Santa Anita which has attracted a field of seven juveniles, including three fillies.  To be contested at five furlongs on turf, the Speakeasy is a Breeders' Cup “Win & You're In” Challenge Race qualifier to the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint Nov. 5 at Del Mar.

A chestnut colt by American Pharoah, out of the Five Star Day mare Just Louise, Forbidden Kingdom was purchased for $300,000 out of the 2020 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Selected Yearlings Showcase Sale and is owned by MyRacehorse and Spendthrift Farm, LLC.  With a solid 79 Beyer Speed Figure in-hand, Forbidden Kingdom will hope to act on turf as well with Juan Hernandez back in the saddle.

A Chicago mainstay, jockey E.T. Baird will be back aboard the speedy One Timer, who is trained by Larry Rivelli and will be making his Southern California debut.  A Kentucky-bred gelding by Trappe Shot, One Timer comes off a pair of impressive sprint wins over synthetic surfaces.  A first-out 12 ½ length open maiden winner going five furlongs at Arlington Park June 26, One Timer, who is owned by Richard Raven and Patricia's Hope, LLC, then sped to a 3 ¾ length score in an ungraded stakes going 5 ½ furlongs at Woodbine July 31.

With five Arlington Park works over synthetic since winning in Canada, One Timer, who has registered Beyer Speed figs of 80 in both of his starts, can be expected to handle turf and if so, rates a big chance in a race that could set him up for Breeders' Cup stardom.

Owner Gary Barber's Time to Party, a chestnut gelding by Kantharos, comes off a 1 ½ length maiden win going five furlongs on turf as the 3-5 favorite on Sept. 2 and figures to attract ample pari-mutuel attention.  Trained by Peter Miller, Time to Party has shown plenty of speed in two starts, his first a narrow second place finish under the same conditions Aug. 1.

With Flavien Prat back aboard, Time to Party, who was purchased for a modest $72,000 at the 2020 Ocala Breeders' Sale Company Winter Mixed Sale, is based at San Luis Rey Downs and will hope to step forward for his high percentage connections on Friday.

Of the three fillies entered, Wesley Ward's turf stakes winning Miss Alacrity rates the best chance in what will be her third start.  A New York-bred by Munnings, she was a 10 length first-out winner versus statebreds going five furlongs on dirt at Belmont Park May 20 and came back at even money to drill open fillies going five furlongs on turf in an ungraded stakes Aug. 1 at Monmouth Park.  She'll be ridden by John Velazquez, who was aboard for the maiden win.

The remaining fillies are the Bob Hess, Jr. conditioned Blame It On Rose, a maiden $32,000 claiming winner two starts back who then took a first condition allowance going six furlongs on dirt Aug. 28 at Del Mar and Rock the Belles, a $2,000 supplemental entrant.  Trained by Luis Mendez, Rock the Belles was an impressive first-out maiden $150,000 claiming winner versus fillies Aug. 14 and was then well beaten in the Grade I Del Mar Debutante Sept. 5.

Speakeasy Score Gives Amanzi Yimpilo Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint Berth

Forwardly placed throughout, eastern-based filly Amanzi Yimpilo rallied under Luis Saez to take Saturday's $100,000 Speakeasy Stakes at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif., by a head, defeating seven males in the process while earning a ticket to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint Nov. 6 at Keeneland.  Trained by Wesley Ward, Amanzi Yimpilo took blinkers off in what was her third start and got 5 1/2 furlongs on turf in 1:02.77.

A first-out maiden turf sprint winner June 10 at Gulfstream Park, Amanzi Yimpoli, who fetched $300,000 as a Keeneland September yearling, was most recently third in an ungraded stakes going 5 1/2 furlongs on turf at Saratoga on Aug. 19.

“She was pretty nervous behind the gate, we had a little trouble, but I knew she was ready,” said Saez, who was aboard for the first time today.  “I could feel the power.  She just broke very well and sat in a great spot which was the spot I was (hoping) to be in.  When we came down the stretch, she fought.  She was a fighter and we got there.  I had a feeling we would get it.”

Off as 5-2 second choice in a field of nine that included one other filly, Amanzi Yimpilo paid $7.20, $3.80 and $3.00.

“We worked her a half mile on the dirt and we went wide, we weren't really trying to set the track afire,” said Blake Heap, assistant to Ward regarding Amanzi Yimpilo's lone workout at Santa Anita on Sept. 19.  “We wanted to do something to get a feel of the situation here and get a little air.  It worked out well.  It's onto the Breeders' Cup we hope!”

Wyfire, in his first try on turf, ran a huge second under Flavien Prat, finishing a half length in front of Windy City Red.  Off at 7-2, Wyfire paid $4.20 and $3.40.

Ridden by Jose Valdivia, Jr., Windy City Red was off at 16-1 and paid $5.40 to show while outfinishing 2-1 favorite Commander Khai by a neck.

Fractions on the race were 21.89, 44.66 and 56.51.

The Speakeasy Stakes is a Breeders' Cup “Win & You're In” Challenge Race qualifier, with the winner earning a fees paid berth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint Nov. 6 at Keeneland.

Juvenile Turf Sprinters Contest ‘Win And You’re In’ Speakeasy

Trainer Wesley Ward, regarded as one of the nation's top trainers of 2-year-olds, will take on the boys with his talented Irish-bred filly Amanzi Yimpilo in Saturday's $100,000 Speakeasy Stakes at Santa Anita.  The Speakeasy, to be contested at 5 1/2 furlongs on turf, has attracted a wide open field of nine, with one additional filly, the Peter Miller-trained Feathers, set to compete.

A first-out maiden special weight winner at Gulfstream Park June 10, Amanzi Yimpilo was subsequently a close third in an ungraded stakes at Saratoga Aug. 19 and she'll be ridden by eastern-based Luis Saez for the first time in the Speakeasy.

Miller's Wyfire, a rousing 3 1/2-length maiden winner going 5 1/2 furlongs on dirt Aug. 16 and the Richard Baltas-trained Commander Khai, an impressive gate to wire maiden winner on turf Sept. 4, also rate huge chances on Saturday.

The Speakeasy is a Breeders' Cup “Win & You're In” Challenge Race qualifier, with the winner earning a fees-paid berth into the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint at Keeneland on Nov. 6.

AMANZI YIMPILO
Owner:  Susan Moulton, Marc Detampel & CJ Thoroughbreds
Trainer:  Wesley Ward

A $300,000 Keeneland September yearling, this daughter of the Scat Daddy stallion No Nay Never, was off at 3-5 in her five furlong turf debut on June 10 and she breezed to a 2 ½ length win.  Subsequently third, beaten 3 ½ lengths over a soft turf at Saratoga Aug. 19, she worked a half mile at Keeneland in 49.20 on Sept. 5 and another half here on Sept. 19 in 49.40.  With Ward's eyes fixed on the Breeders' Cup at Keeneland Nov. 6, look for a big effort.

WYFIRE
Owner:  Gary Barber
Trainer:  Peter Miller

Purchased privately by Barber following his big maiden win on dirt Aug. 16, Miller immediately made plans to run on turf in the Speakeasy and secured the services of top jock Flavien Prat.  A Kentucky-bred colt by the Smart Strike stallion Dominus, Wyfire appears poised for a huge effort in what will be his third career start and first try on grass.

COMMANDER KHAI
Owner:  Calvin Nguyen
Trainer:  Richard Baltas

Quick from the gate, this Kentucky-bred colt by Twirling Candy showed the way in his five-furlong turf debut on Aug. 14, tiring a bit late to finish second by a half length.  Off at even money and ridden for the first time by Umberto Rispoli, he rocketed clear of his competition and never looked back in a 3 ¼ length maiden score going five furlongs on turf Sept. 4.  If he runs back to his last race, Commander Khai should be plenty tough in the Speakeasy.

Santa Anita Releases Fall Stakes Schedule, Including Seven ‘Win And You’re In’ Events

Santa Anita's 2020 Autumn Meeting will kick into high gear on opening day, Saturday, Sept. 19, with the Grade III, $100,000 Chillingworth Stakes for fillies and mares at 6 ½ furlongs and will offer fans and horsemen a total of 24 stakes over 18 racing days, through closing day, Oct. 25.

(Most recently run as the Grade III LA Woman Stakes, the Chillingworth has been renamed in honor of the late Sherwood Chillingworth, a longtime Director of the Oak Tree Racing Association who was held in the highest regard throughout North American racing).

Customarily high on the Autumn Meet stakes agenda is a series of Breeders' Cup “Win and You're In” Challenge Races, which provides the winners of each race an automatic fees-paid berth in the Breeders' Cup World Championships at Keeneland on Nov. 6 & 7.

In addition to the Grade III Chillingworth on Sept. 19, the $100,000 Speakeasy Stakes, for 2-year-olds at 5 ½ furlongs on turf, is the first of seven “Win and You're In” events, with the Speakeasy serving as a prep for the Grade II Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint.

On Saturday, Sept. 26, four “Win and You're In” stakes, the Grade I, $300,000 Rodeo Drive, a prep for the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf; the Grade I, $300,000 American Pharoah, for 2-year-olds prepping for the Grade I Breeders' Cup Juvenile; the Grade I, $300,000 Awesome Again, for 3-year-olds an up prepping for the Grade I Breeders' Cup Classic, and the Grade II, $200,000 Chandelier Stakes for 2-year-old fillies prepping for the Grade I Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, will all be offered on what promises to be a blockbuster afternoon that will include a total of six stakes.

The remaining two Breeders' Cup “Win and You're In” stakes, the Grade II, $200,000 Zenyatta, a pivotal steppingstone to the Grade I Breeders' Cup Distaff, and the Grade II, $200,000 Santa Anita Sprint Championship, which preps 3-year-olds and up for the Grade I Breeders' Cup Sprint, will both be offered on Sunday, Sept. 27.

The always-popular Grade II, $200,000 Eddie D Stakes, named in honor of one of racing's all-time great jockeys, retired Hall of Famer Eddie Delahoussaye, is for 3-year-olds and up at 5 ½ furlongs on turf and will be run Friday, Sept. 25.
