Nate Newby: ‘A Better Day-To-Day Product’ Is Key To Santa Anita’s Success

Santa Anita's new general manager Nate Newby spoke to the Los Angeles Times this week about his vision for the Arcadia, Calif. track. The long-time racing executive has been with Santa Anita for approximately 20 years, and is committed to improving the Southern California racing product.

A regular at handicapping tournaments over the years, Newby plans to use the handle and field size statistics to measure success in this new role. The track's groundbreaking safety initiatives will continue to be a primary focus, as well.

“Southern California and Santa Anita have over the years been the gold standard of racing,” Newby told latimes.com. “We have the quality, we have the best horses in the world and that shows in the premier events — the Triple Crown races and Breeders' Cup. Putting on a better day-to-day product for our horse players is key. My top priorities, 1 and 1a, are continuing our safety initiatives, making sure we're safe for both horses and riders.”

2020 At Del Mar: Team Steps Up To Face Huge Challenges

So just up ahead – after this Sunday in fact – Del Mar will wipe its sanitized hands clean of racing in 2020. In a way, the word that fits best for that is “Amen.” But in another way, what an amazingly amazing year it has been.

Like the rest of the country and most of the rest of the world, the COVID-19 thing has turned things anywhere from sideways to upside down in California horse racing. But despite shutdowns, lockdowns, purple tiers and “no you can'ts” raining down, the state – for the most part – kept on racing. And it's a darn good thing it did.

There's a simple economic formula at work in that regard: California has more than 5,000 Thoroughbred racehorses in its midst – big, strong, fast athletes that are pleasing to the eye — and totally needy. They need to be exercised, groomed, bathed, fed and pampered every day if they are to live and stay healthy. Those things can only happen to them and for them if there is racing.

If racing takes place and wagering follows, portions of the betting build purses. When owners win purse monies, they in turn can pay their trainers, who next are able to pay their grooms/exercise riders/hot walkers, all of whom do the day-in-day-out things necessary to care for their horses.

Initially, the virus threatened that whole chain of well-being. But racing being an outdoor sport, racing officials rising to the occasion, those directly involved with the horses willing to do whatever it took to continue on, the public responding positively to live athletic events – all of those circumstances allowed for the sport to carry on.

But it wasn't easy.

In Southern California, Santa Anita in Los Angeles County went to the mat first with the virus and all its ripples and – after taking some body blows – fought back and found a way. Then it came Del Mar's turn.

Del Mar was up to the challenge by calling on its most valuable resource – the team that calls Del Mar their workplace and their home-away-from-home. Dozens and dozens of them stepped up, putting egos in their back pocket and replacing them with “let's get it done” attitudes.

First up, there had to be a plan. Two of the track's stars – senior VP for operations and administration Ann Hall and director of risk management Kim Jacobson – took that one on. Two months worth of figuring, asking, calculating, phoning, cajoling, writing, rewriting, late nights and lots of sweat later the plan was down – 10 pages worth, single spaced.

Officially called the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club COVID-19 Operational Plan, the document covered it all – from the moment the first horse set foot on the grounds to the time when the last horse trailer went out the gate. It spoke directly to what every person and animal was to be about; every when, where, why and how. Backstretch, frontside, racetrack, paddock, jockeys' room, starting gate, quarantines, cleanings, food, health screenings, masks, wrist bands – and more. Just about every activity that could or would happen at the racetrack was scrutinized and presented. A guiding light in the report was the insightful aid provided by Del Mar's partners at Scripps Health, led by their chief medical officer, Dr. Ghazala Sharieff, and her expert medical team.

After setting it up, Hall and Jacobson got to live it and make it real.

“Just amazing to see how this has all gone,” Hall says. “Normally around here we plan events well ahead, then make them happen. But with this, every day was something new, something we had to react to. You had to hold on tight and be ready for anything. Lots of anxiety out there; lots of stress. But you deal with it; you have to.”

Jacobson helped present the plan to the San Diego Health and Human Services Agency.

“They came out and liked what we'd set up to start,” she said. “They indicated before the meet that it looked like we were ready. Then after we got up and running, they came back and went over it again with us, step by step. Again, we got a green light.”

Then once the racing got rolling, there were Del Mar staff members filling extra roles, tackling the flare ups as they rose up. Some folks had two, three, sometimes as many as a half dozen different jobs and roles that they had to fill.

The track's ace credentials manager, Mark Bullock, had to wear four or five different hats at different times. His take: “It was really interesting to do someone else's job and find out what it was all about.”

Ryan Frear, who normally has a nice 9-5 office gig dealing with marketing and sponsors, suddenly found himself at the Stable Gate checking in backside workers from 4 a.m. to noon. “Certainly, it was very different,” he says. “My sleep schedule, well…. But I knew we needed help and I was willing to do that anyway I could. And it's allowed me to see up close how the backside of the track really works. I think it's going to help me be better at my 'real' job.”

Sue Walls, DMTC's VP for facilities, was yet another changing out chapeaus. She was the one who had to work with the track's janitorial staff and its leader, Shayla Ward, to make sure every inch of the track was cleaned repeatedly throughout both meetings. She earned the title “The Queen of Clean” for calling the shots not only on what was to be cleaned, but also what soaps, hand sanitizers and bleaches were to be gotten and used and where they were to be located.

“I got to know our janitorial staff real well,” she states. “They're a terrific bunch and they work very hard. I also got to fill the role of providing food and snacks to the jockeys, the valets and the racing staff in the jockeys' room every racing day. I love those guys. They're just great people to work with.”

She and Bullock combined to obtain and laminate more than a thousand safety signs that were posted all around the facility to call attention to needed things in the time of virus. If you had any doubts about what you should do in most any circumstance, the signs showed the way.

Regardless of the fact that it raced 25% fewer days in the summer of 2020 than it had the year before, wagering increased to $466 million compared to $431 million in 2019. Its daily average handle rose from $12 million last year to more than $17 million in 2020.

The fall session is running in a similar pattern. The racing is the best in the country right now; it is also the safest, and handle is up a remarkable 25% as the meet heads toward the finish.

It has not been easy. Lots of blood, sweat and tears have flowed. Del Mar dearly misses its fans; the joy of cheer and shouts and claps as they are coming down the stretch is a void that is all but impossible to fill. But Del Mar carries on; it helps to keep the sport alive and going forward in Southern California.

It has, in the end, followed the wise advice offered on safety signs that sit on the walls of all of its restrooms: “Keep Calm and Wash Your Hands.”

Smooth Like Strait, Field Pass Face Off In Sunday’s Grade 2 Twilight Derby

Cannon Thoroughbreds homebred Smooth Like Strait returns to Southern California and will try to stretch his speed to a mile and one eighth on turf as he heads a field of nine sophomores in Sunday's Grade 2, $200,000 Twilight Derby at Santa Anita.

A resounding 2 ½ length winner of the Grade 2 La Jolla Handicap two starts back, Smooth Like Strait, who is trained by Michael McCarthy, finished fourth as the 6-5 favorite in a Grade 2 stakes at Churchill Downs on Sept. 5 and will likely vie for favoritism with midwestern invader Field Pass, who he faced on Sept. 5.

A two-time Grade 3 winner in Kentucky, trainer Mike Maker's Field Pass was a close third in the same race Smooth Like Strait was favored in Sept. 5 and he's won four out of his seven starts this year.

C R K Stable's Express Train, who showed much promise at age two, will be trying turf for the first time on Sunday in what will be his third start of the year for John Shirreffs and rates a big chance in what appears to be a wide open Twilight Derby.

SMOOTH LIKE STRAIT

A Kentucky-bred colt by Midnight Lute, he made the lead turning for home in the Grade 2 American Turf on Sept. 5 at Churchill Downs, but tired late to be beaten four lengths. A gutty one mile minor turf stakes winner three starts back at Churchill Downs on May 23, he's won two out of his last three starts and was also a winner of the Grade 3 Cecile B. DeMille Stakes six starts back on Dec. 1, 2019. Smooth Like Strait is four for nine lifetime with earnings of $277,823 and he'll be reunited with Umberto Rispoli, who pointed him to victory in the La Jolla Handicap as the 4-5 favorite.

FIELD PASS

Owner: Three Diamonds Farm Trainer: Mike Maker

A Grade 3 winner going a mile and one eighth on synthetic Polytrack at Turfway Park on March 14, he notched his second Grade 3 win over a “good” turf three starts back at Keeneland on July 12. Most recently third, beaten 1 ¾ lengths in the Grade 2 American Turf Stakes at Churchill Downs Sept. 5, a race in which he rallied to wrest command from Smooth Like Strait in mid-stretch, he was a gate to wire winner of an ungraded stakes going 1 1/8 miles on turf four starts back on June 20 at Churchill. Field Pass, who defeated Smooth Like Strait by 2 ¼ lengths on Sept. 5, has demonstrated ample versatility and the ability to get the Twilight Derby distance. With an overall mark of 13-5-2-2, he's the leading money earner in the field with $472,610 and he'll no doubt vie for favoritism when ridden for the first time by Drayden Van Dyke.

EXPRESS TRAIN

A $500,000 Keeneland September Yearling Sale purchase, this colt by Union Rags broke his maiden going one mile on dirt in his second start by 14 ¼ lengths and in his final start at age two, was a well beaten fourth at 5-2 in the Grade 1 American Pharoah Stakes at a mile and one sixteenth on Sept. 27, 2019. An impressive two length winner of a 6 ½ furlong allowance on Aug. 23, a race in which he overcame a stumble at the start, he flattened out a bit late when second, beaten three quarters of a length as the 4-5 favorite in a one mile allowance here Sept. 26. In what will be his third start off a long layoff, Express Train should be a tighter horse on Sunday as he tries turf for the first time in his sixth career start with regular rider Mike Smith aloft.

Former Jockey, Media Specialist Ken Church Dies At Age 90 After Contracting COVID-19

Ken Church, a prominent national rider from the 1940s to the 1960s who then transitioned to racetrack Media work in Southern California, died this morning at a hospital in Reno, Nevada, his daughter, Debbie Anderson, reported. He was 90.

Anderson said her father had suffered a case of pneumonia a week ago at the retirement home where he lived in Reno and was moved to a local hospital. The cause of death was listed as the result of him contracting COVID-19.

Church, who was born in Windsor, Ontario, Canada on March 24, 1930, came to the racetrack as a teenager at Woodbine in Toronto, then began riding in the U.S. shortly thereafter. He rode in Florida, New Jersey, Illinois and Kentucky before finished his career in California. He rode in more than 14,000 races and had more than 2,000 winners.

Among the top horses he partnered with were Crafty Admiral, Oil Capitol, Old Hat, Bornastar, Native Diver, Mr. Consistency and Viking Spirit. He was the leading rider at Arlington Park and Washington Park in Chicago and a solid force wherever he competed.

When he retired from racing in 1967, he used his racing knowledge, good looks and personable ways to easily transition into a Media role for the three Southern California tracks, doing television and radio work along with speaking engagements as a racing goodwill ambassador for Del Mar, Santa Anita and Hollywood Park.

He and his late wife Nancy finally settled in Olivenhain near Del Mar and he confined his Media roles to the seaside track, working there from the 1970s through the 1990s. He was extremely popular among San Diego Media representatives who loved his ready laugh and his many racetrack tales. He retired from that role in the late '90s and moved to Reno to be near old friends.

Among his involvements with racing promotions was his participation in Del Mar's unique “Rocking Chair Derby,” the Thoroughbred version of baseball's Old Timers Game. Retired riders came back for a day to ride in a special race and the event, organized by Del Mar director of publicity Dan Smith, proved hugely popular with racing fans during its run from 1973 to 1978. Church rode in those races and won the 1974 version much to the delight of his fellow riders.

He is survived by his married daughters Debbie Anderson of Encinitas, CA, and Laurie Kurluk of Phoenix, AZ, as well as a son, Michael. Additionally, he is survived by nine grandchildren.

The family has indicated that his preference was that there be no services. They have said he will be cremated and his ashes will be combined with those of his wife of 63 years, Nancy, and that they will be scattered together at some point in the future.
