Flash Sale a ‘Sweet’ Success for Fox Hill

Sweet Tea (Into Mischief–Ava Pie, by Distorted Humor), the sole offering from Fasig-Tipton Digital's Fox Hill Flash Sale, was purchased for $320,000 by Vicente Perez. The 4-year-old filly, a maiden winner in four starts for Fox Hill and Larry Jones, was consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent for the late Rick Porter's operation.

Sweet Tea, a $300,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase in 2019, is a full-sister to two-time stakes winner and multiple graded-placed Sound Machine and is also a half-sister to SW & GSP Forever Liesl (Mineshaft). The filly's dual Grade III-winning second dam Lakenheath (Colonial Affair) is responsible for SW/MGSP The Truth or Else (Yes It's True), GSW Decorated Soldier (Proud Citizen) and the SP Fighter Wing (Empire Maker), whose daughter Glass Ceiling (Constitution) won this year's GIII Barbara Fritchie S. and is entered for Saturday's GIII Distaff S. at Aqueduct.

Sweet Tea is bred on the exact same cross as Into Mischief's Grade I winners Life Is Good and Practical Joke and on the cross over Forty Niner-line dams that is responsible for the likes of MGISW Goldencents.

“The Fox Hill Flash Sale was a tremendous success, demonstrating the strength and versatility of Fasig-Tipton Digital,” said Leif Aaron, Fasig-Tipton Director of Digital Sales. “It was a win for all parties, as the purchaser–who actually bred the filly–is thrilled to have Sweet Tea back in his broodmare band.  We are very appreciative of longtime Fasig-Tipton supporter Fox Hill Farm entrusting the sale of such a quality filly with our new digital platform.”

Ten unique bidders battled for the popular broodmare prospect, with more than 150 bids placed during the 50-hour bidding window.

The next Fasig-Tipton Digital Sale is slated for Apr. 21-26. Nominations for that auction are open through Apr. 14.

Ce Ce Punches Her Ticket To Breeders’ Cup At Del Mar With Princess Rooney Victory

At Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla, a spot in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at Del Mar was up for grabs in the seven-furlong Grade 2 Princess Rooney Stakes. Facing a field that included Bed of Roses Stakes winner Estilo Talentoso and Ouija Board Distaff winner Laura's Light, Ce Ce earned another spot in a Breeders' Cup gate with her 3 1/4-length victory in the Princess Rooney.

At the break, Laura's Light stumbled while the rest of the field got away clean, with Pacific Gale quickest to the lead. Under rider Victor Espinoza, who had won the Smile Sprint just half an hour earlier, Ce Ce stalked the early pace in fourth, content to wait for the final turn to put in her move, while Thissmytime and Pacific Gale briefly battled for the lead, Sound Machine just behind them. Romero Maragh powered Pacific Gale to the lead as they neared the final turn, with Sound Machine making her move just behind them.

Ce Ce and Estilo Talentoso went wide on the final turn as they geared up for their stretch runs, narrowing the gap between them, Sound Machine, and Pacific Gale. They went into the stretch four-wide, but Ce Ce was fastest in the stretch, splitting horses to take an easy lead over Estilo Talentoso and Sound Machine. The winning margin was 3 1/4 lengths with Ce Ce finishing the seven furlongs in 1:21.94. Hallawallah, Pacific Gale, Laura's Light, Heiressall, and Thissmytime rounded out the field.

The G2 Princess Rooney Stakes is a Win and You're In race for the 2021 Breeders' Cup at Del Mar in Del Mar, Calif. Winners receive a free and guaranteed spot in the starting gate for the corresponding Breeders' Cup race.

Victor Espinoza was thrilled with his mount's performance. “She's pretty impressive. She loves this track, it's a little different than what she's been running at,” Espinoza said. “Today, she ran her race. They were rolling, the ones in front of me. I know they're going to get tired turning for home, so I just gave her enough time to split the horses.”

Trainer Michael McCarthy watched the race at Los Alamitos Race Track in Cypress, Calif., happy with the show she put on in the stretch. “I thought we were in a good spot. I was hoping to have a bit of a target to run at. I told Victor not to get in a hurry and not rush her out of there and ride her where she was comfortable. We were hoping for a nice stalking trip, and that we did. Around the turn, it looked like we had plenty of run. It was just a matter of trying to get outside and finding our best stride, and we did that today.”

Ce Ce paid $7.40, $3.40, and $2.60. Second-place Estilo Talentoso paid $2.60 and $2.20. Sound Machine paid $5.00 to show.

With this win, Ce Ce earns another chance at a Breeders' Cup win after finishing fifth in last year's Breeders' Cup Distaff at Keeneland. Sired by Elusive Quality out of the Belong To Me mare Miss Houdini, Ce Ce was bred in Kentucky by owner Bo Hirsch. The Princess Rooney is Ce Ce's second win in three starts in 2021 and her sixth career victory in 13 starts and $1,113,100 in total winnings.

Sound Machine Should ‘Be Able To Sustain A Longer Run’ In Saturday’s Hurricane Bertie

If e Five Racing Thoroughbreds' Sound Machine can notch her first graded-stakes success in Saturday's $100,000 Hurricane Bertie (G3) at Gulfstream Park, it will be music to trainer Saffie Joseph Jr.'s ears.

The Hurricane Bertie, a 6 ½-furlong sprint for fillies and mares, headlines a 12-race program that will also include the $75,000 Melody of Colors and the $75,000 Texas Glitter.

Sound Machine has had her moments during her 11-race career, but the multiple graded stakes-placed 4-year-old filly has also hit a few sour notes, including an off-the-board performance behind Pacific Gale in the Jan. 23 Inside Information (G2) at Gulfstream.

The daughter of Into Mischief tuned up for another encounter with the John Kimmel-trained Pacific Gale Sunday with a sharp half-mile workout in 47.05 seconds while working in company with Collaborate, a brilliant maiden winner who is being pointed to the March 27 Curlin Florida Derby (G1) presented by Hill 'n' Dale Farm at Xalapa.

“She had a good work with Collaborate the other day. Going into this race we think we have a chance,” trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. said. “Obviously, John Kimmel's horse will be the favorite. We're hoping to get her to run a big race. We'd like to get a graded-stakes win out of her. This looks like a good opportunity to get it done.”

Sound Machine is winless in seven starts since capturing the 6 ½-furlong Glitter Woman by 6 ½ lengths in January 2020, but she produced a graded-stakes finish in the Miss Preakness (G3) at Pimlico, where she rallied to third, beaten 1 ½ lengths, after getting bumped at the start. The Florida-bred filly followed up her disappointing effort in the Inside Information with a third-place finish in an optional claiming allowance.

“She's going to have to run the best race of her life, but we feel she can improve,” Joseph said. “She always seems to have a short run in her, and you have to time it well. We did a minor throat procedure after her last start. We hope that helps. If it does help her, I think she'll be able to sustain a longer run.”

Tyler Gaffalione has the return call on the $500,000 yearling purchase.

Tobey Morton's Pacific Gale had gone winless in 17 starts before breaking through with a two-length victory in the Inside Information. During the dry spell, the daughter of Flat Out, was stakes-placed eight times and graded stakes-placed on five occasions, including a second-place finish in the 2019 Hurricane Bertie.

In the Inside Information, the 6-year-old veteran stakes performer made a three-wide rally into the stretch and drew off to score by 2 ¾ lengths.

Junior Alvarado has the mount aboard Pacific Gale.

Saguaro Row, also a 6-year-old veteran stakes mare, is scheduled to make her first start for Greenville Stable and trainer Kent Sweezey in the Hurricane Bertie. The daughter of Union Rags is coming off a third-place finish in the Jan 20 Interborough at Aqueduct.

Paco Lopez has the call.

Magic Cap Stables' Slam Dunk, a Shug McGaughey-trained optional claiming allowance winner at Gulfstream last time out; Lowwood Farm LLC and trainer Fernando Abreu's Royal Meghan, a winner of back-to-back optional claiming allowances; Arindel's Sonar, who defeated Sound Machine in her most recent start; Paradise Farm Corp.'s Cory Gal, who finished second behind Sonar in her last start; and trainer Patrick Biancone and D P Racing LLC's Reluctant Bride, a two-time winner last year who is scheduled to make her 2021 debut; round out the field.
