Sombeyay Retired to Swifty Farms

MGSW Sombeyay (Into Mischief–Teroda, by Limehouse) has been retired to stand the 2022 breeding season at Swifty Farms in Seymour, IN. He will command a fee of $3,000 LFSN. A winner of the GIII Sanford S. sprinting at Saratoga as a juvenile and GIII Canadian Turf S. over a mile on the Gulfstream sod as a 4-year-old last term while racing for Todd Pletcher, the $230,000 KEESEP yearling was acquired last summer and had been running for Swifty Farms and Peter Miller since then. He retires with a career record of 19-4-7-0 and earnings of $482,316.

“Sombeyay is a very correct, well-balanced individual that will catch your eye every time you see him,” said Swifty Farms manager Jerri Harmon. “Couple all of that with dual-surface speed…that makes the prospect of his future as a sire just electrifying.”

Out of MSP Teroda, Sombeyay is a half to this year's GIII Florida Oaks winner Domain Expertise (Kitten's Joy).

He joins a roster that has already seen two new additions for 2022 in Sleepy Eyes Todd (Paddy O'Prado) and American Pastime (Tapizar).

Multiple Graded Winner Sombeyay Joins Swifty Farms Roster In Indiana

Multiple graded stakes winner Sombeyay has retired to stand at stud at Swifty Farms in Seymour, Ind. The half-brother to Grade 3 Florida Oaks winner Domain Expertise, will stand for $3,000 stands and nurses.

The son of Into Mischief and out of the Limehouse mare, Teroda, retires with earnings in excess of $480,000. This, after a three-year career that saw the precocious colt break his maiden his first time out at Gulfstream Park, winning by 6 1/4 lengths on the dirt for then owner Starlight Racing. He would then finish second in a listed stakes before taking the Grade 3 Sanford Stakes at Saratoga, beating eventual Longines Breeders' Cup Classic winner Knicks Go and eventual G1 Alfred G. Handicap winner Lexitonian.

At the age of four, Sombeyay hit a staggering 120 Equibase rating winning the G3 Canadian Turf Stakes at Gulfstream Park.

Sombeyay's first trainer, Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher liked what he saw from the colt while racing under him.

“He's won graded stakes on two different surfaces, and that's hard to do,” he told the media in 2020.

In mid-2020, Swifty Farms purchased the young stallion and continued racing him under trainer Peter Miller, hitting the board in four graded stakes.

The colt joins an already established stallion roster that has seen two enticing additions already this year with millionaire Sleepy Eyes Todd and multiple graded stakes placer American Pastime.

“It's very exciting to offer such a diverse group of stallions for 2022,” says Harmon. “Swifty Farms now offers stallions to meet the needs of almost any breeder.”

Sombeyay joins an already full roster at Swifty Farms that includes newcomers American Pastime (Tapizar, $1,500) and Sleepy Eyes Todd (Paddy O'Prado, $3,500) and established stallions Guys Reward (Grand Reward, $1,000), Isotherm (Lonhro, $1,500), Pass Rush (Crown Ambassador, $1,500), Pataky Kid (Rockport Harbor, $2,000), Ready's Image (More Than Ready, $2,000) and Unbridled Express (Unbridled's Song, private treaty).

D’Amato Finds Home In Turf Sprints For Gregorian Chant

Long regarded as a two-turn horse on grass, trainer Phil D'Amato's 5-year-old Gregorian Chant has found a home sprinting on turf at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif., as he rallied from last to take Saturday's Grade 3, $100,000 San Simeon Stakes by a neck while getting six furlongs on turf in 1:08.79 under Juan Hernandez—his second consecutive turf stakes win at the distance.

Unhurried early from his number two post position, Gregorian Chant was into the bridle, about four lengths off the lead while a joint fifth heading to the far turn as heavily favored Jolie Olimpica showed the way. Moving easily around the turn, Hernandez wheeled four-deep turning for home and in a thriller, outran Sombeyay and Flavien Prat late.

“He broke slow and I just let him get comfortable (on the backstretch) and then when we went into the stretch, Phil told me to get him rolling and that's what I did,” said Hernandez, who also orchestrated a 2 ¼-length win in the ungraded Clockers' Corner Stakes on Jan. 24. “It's exciting fighting with another horse, going head and head, you feel excited and you feel strong. You just want to win the race.”

Off at 7-2 in a field of six older horses, Gregorian Chant, who was bred in England, paid $9.80, $4.20 and $2.20.

“It took us awhile to figure out what he wanted to do,” said D'Amato. “This horse has found his home sprinting, no question. There's so much difference in him now, compared to him at three and four (years old). He' matured a lot and we will definitely keep him short.”

Ridden by Flavien Prat and trained by Peter Miller, Sombeyay was attentive to the pace, made the lead turning for home and couldn't hold the winner off while finishing 2 ½ lengths in front of Jolie Olimpica. Off at 4-1, Sombeyay paid $4.80 and $2.60.

Richard Mandella's Brazilian-bred mare Jolie Olimpica, who went to the front out of the gate under Mike Smith and was head and head into and around the turn, couldn't run with the top two late and paid $2.10 to show while off at even money.

Fractions on the race were 22.72, 45.52 and 57.32.

Veteran Hembree The Morning-Line Choice In Saturday’s Thunder Road

Fresh off a Grade 2 win sprinting and in the money in 26 out of 40 lifetime starts, Tom Kagele's 7-year-old Hembree heads a field of eight older horses going one mile on turf in Saturday's Grade 3, $100,000 Thunder Road Stakes at Santa Anita.

Claimed for $62,500 out of a one turn mile win two starts back on Nov. 19 at Churchill Downs, Hembree rallied for an authoritative three quarter length score going 6 ½ furlongs on turf in the Grade 2 Joe Hernandez Stakes here on Jan. 1. Trained by Peter Miller, Hembree, a two-time graded winner, is a full horse by Proud Citizen, out of the Langfuhr mare Knockatrina.

With lifetime earnings of $927,371, Hembree, who will be ridden back by Joel Rosario, is 40-8-10-8 overall, dating back to his first-out maiden win at Saratoga at age two in August of 2016.

Miller's “Avis Choice” is Sombeyay, who comes off a front-running 1 ¼ lengths allowance win on Jan. 15 as the 4-5 favorite under Flavien Prat, who appears to have opted for Border Town. Originally trained by Todd Pletcher, Sombeyay will be making his third start for Miller as he seeks his third graded stakes win. Owned by Swifty Farms, Inc., Sombeyay, a 5-year-old horse by Into Mischief, is 15-4-5-0 overall and will be ridden for the first time by Juan Hernandez.

Trained by Richard Mandella, Border Town comes off what appeared to be his best career race on Jan. 8, as he rallied from off the pace to take a one mile allowance by half a length under regular rider Prat. Owned by Ramona Bass and Perry Bass III, Border Town, a 5-year-old gelding by War Front, seeks his first graded stakes win in what will be his 12th start.

Trainer Dan Blacker's comebacking Hit the Road, who seeks his third consecutive win, lends further depth to the Thunder Road party. Idle since taking the restricted Oceanside Stakes at one mile on turf July 10 at Del Mar, Hit the Road was also a minor stakes winner going a mile on grass at Santa Anita in his third career start on Oct. 6, 2019. Owned by D K Racing, LLC and Radley Equine, Inc., Hit the Road, a 4-year-old colt by More Than Ready, would relish a fast pace to run at with regular rider Umberto Rispoli up.
