Twitter Roundup: Industry Reacts To Breeders’ Cup Screw-Up

Modern Games' victory in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf was met with loud boos and social media derision, a circumstance that had little to do with the horse or his racing connections (Godolphin, Charlie Appleby, and William Buick).

The issue was that the 2-year-old colt was running as a non-wagering interest, for purse money only, since he had been prematurely scratched by the Breeders' Cup veterinary team due to a starting gate incident.

More details on that scratch and the California Horse Racing Board's reasoning is available here.

Some of the best Twitter reactions to the incident and Modern Games' subsequent victory are below:

Youth Collaboration Group to Promote Careers in Racing

The Youth Collaboration Group, for young people with an interest in horseracing and marketing, was launched by the British Horseracing Authority on Thursday. Headed by Careers In Racing, the careers marketing arm of the BHA, the Youth Collaboration Group will give young people the chance to contribute their views and ideas about marketing initiatives and content used to promote careers within the industry. The group is open to anyone between 14 and 21 years of age with a keen interest in marketing, graphic design, social media, video content, events and communications. To apply to join the Youth Collaboration Group, please visit www.careersinracing.com.

Zoe Elliott, Head of Careers Marketing and Recruitment at the BHA, said, “It's important for us at Careers In Racing to make sure that whatever we produce–be that a careers video or careers event–is relevant to the audience it is aimed at.

“We want to build a team of young people who really understand what we are trying to achieve, and who can give us some honest feedback, and co-create some of our initiatives.  At the same time, we want to support them in developing work-ready skills to enhance their CVs.

“This is a really exciting opportunity, and we can't wait to get started. Youth Collaboration Group is our working title for this initiative so the very first activity they be asked to give feedback on is the creation of a name and logo for their group. We hope that lots of young people get in touch to be involved.”

Trainer Jamie Osborne Calls For Action Over ‘Abhorrent’ Social Media Threats Against His Daughter

Social media-savvy trainer and former jumps rider Jamie Osborne made a splash on Twitter Wednesday evening when he posted a screenshot of a disturbing message sent to his daughter, 19-year-old apprentice jockey Saffie Osborne. The trainer called for punishment and platform bans of the perpetrator, and said the incident has been referred to police, according to racingpost.com.

“I know jockeys get messages all the time, and I don't know what proportion of them get reported, but I think there comes a point where enough is enough,” Osborne told racingpost.com. “I know Saffie has been getting them. But the nature and the tone of this one was, in my mind, a step too far, and I don't see why jockeys should have to put up with this on a regular basis without there seemingly being any call for action.”

Multiple social media users stepped up to support Osborne, including leading trainer Mark Johnston, who is also pursuing police action with a similar abusive message sent to jockey Joe Fanning.

Issues with cyber bulling caused the British Horseracing Authority to join with other sports in a social media blackout during the first weekend of May, and a spokesperson for the BHA told racingpost.com: “Everyone at the BHA was appalled to learn of the abuse received by Saffie Osborne. The BHA has been in touch with Saffie and her family to offer our support and it has been heartening to see the racing community uniting to condemn this abhorrent behavior.”

BHA to Support Social Media Boycott

In conjunction with the sporting community, the British Horseracing Authority–as well as the Racecourse Association, Horsemen's Group, The Jockey Club and Professional Jockeys Association–will take part in a social media boycott beginning 9p.m. on Friday through 11:59 p.m. Monday, May 3. The action highlights the unchecked social media abuse and racism targeting sporting participants and was initially launched by English football's governing bodies last Saturday, with numerous other sport governing bodies, sponsors, partners, broadcasters and media outlets joining in.

“I am grateful to everyone in the sport who takes part in this boycott to help spread this clear message of solidarity to social media companies and say that enough is enough, and change is needed,” said Julie Harrington, chief executive of the BHA.

All racecourses with meetings this weekend have been informed of the planned support for the boycott, as well as the bodies representing the sport's participants.

The Professional Jockeys Association has co-funded a short film, “The Fall”, which will address social media abuse and its effect on mental health. The film is in post-production and will be released later this year.

PJA Chief Executive Paul Struthers said, “Our members receive vile abuse on a daily basis. We are sick and tired of it and the lack of action by social media companies. We and our members stand shoulder to shoulder with other sports in sending a united message that online hate and discriminatory abuse is totally unacceptable and needs to be eliminated.”
