Dark Angel’s Chardy Party Makes the Grade in Soaring Softly

Stonestreet Stables has enjoyed a good bit of success over the last few years sourcing fillies from Europe and placing them with Wesley Ward, such as MG1SW and two-time Royal Ascot heroine Campanelle (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}); GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint S. winner Twilight Gleaming (Ire) (National Defense {GB}); and SW Ruthin (GB) (Ribchester {Ire}). The latest success story from their European venture is Chardy Party (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), who took her record to two-for-two Saturday in Belmont's GIII Soaring Softly S.

Rallying from well back to take her debut going 5 1/2 furlongs at Keeneland Apr. 27, the 110,000gns TATOCT acquisition was dispatched as the 2-1 favorite under Irad Ortiz, Jr. Breaking sharply from the far outside post, the gray perched two-wide in fifth as 42-1 shot Champagne Poetry (Carpe Diem) clicked off opening splits of :22.88 and :46.38 with GSW Sail By (Astern {Aus}) breathing down her neck. Chardy Party ranged up three wide turning for home, drawing alongside Sail By as Champagne Poetry called it a day. Those two battled down the lane with Chardy Party edging clear in late stretch to win by a half-length. Breeze Easy (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}) charged up on the outside late to nail Sail By on the wire for the place spot.

“We worked her two works ago and had her in front of Duke of Hazzard (Fr) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), who ran second in the Seek Again the other day,” Ward said. “She kind of floundered when she was in front. In last week's work. We put her behind and she worked really well. When she made the lead today, she was gawking around a little bit. I think she's one of those that wants to come from behind.”

He added, “She ran really well today. Certainly, a mile looks like something she would be able to handle. We'll sit down with the Stonestreet crew and Ben McElroy and come up with a plan for her.”

“She broke much better,” said Ortiz, who was aboard for both starts. “Last time she missed the break and still came home like that the last 100 yards. Today, she was outside. Last time she was in the one hole. She did break good and put me in a great position. I was able to take care of it. I didn't have to send her just to take the hole. After that, I bided my time and asked her to run. I knew she was going to be there for me, so I waited as long as I could. Turning for home, I saw the other horse to the inside [Sail By] and said, 'I've got to go.'”

Pedigree Notes:
Chardy Party is the 48th graded winner and 85th black-type scorer for her sire Dark Angel. The winner is the sole produce out of her dam Spiritual Lady, who was a stakes winner in Ireland.

Deep Field of 13 Clashes in Soaring Softly

A tough-to-separate baker's dozen of 3-year-old turf fillies will face off in Saturday's seven-furlong GIII Soaring Softly S. at Belmont, with many promising runners looking poised to jump into the division's upper echelon.

Three horses, each from powerhouse barns, figure to vie for favoritism, and Chad Brown's Haughty (Empire Maker) was given the slight nod on the morning line at 5-2. Disqualified out of an impressive, 3 1/4-length first-out score debuting over a mile on the local turf Sept. 17, the $310,000 OBS April buy had no problem breaking her maiden for real by four lengths next out at Keeneland and overcame a wide post to finish a close third when last seen in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf Nov. 5 at Del Mar.

Waterville Lake Stables' New York-bred Derrynane (Quality Road) looms a big chance. A heavily-bet debut victress last July at Saratoga, the homebred annexed the Woodbine Cares S. two starts later Sept. 19 before running a sneaky-good, late-closing fourth against males in the GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint. Returning in the Limestone S. Apr. 15 at Keeneland, the bay was flying late and just missed by a neck to wire-to-wire Wesley Ward runner Ruthin (GB) (Ribchester {Ire}). The Soaring Softly will be Derrynane's first try beyond 5 1/2 furlongs.

Ward will send out third choice Chardy Party (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) for Stonestreet Stables. Making her belated bow as a 9-5 favorite against 11 rivals Apr. 27 at Keeneland, the gray broke a bit slowly from the rail before uncorking a monster closing kick despite racing greenly, rallying from 10 lengths back in the final three-sixteenths to get up by an improbable half-length.

Other intriguing runners include Breeze Easy (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}), who makes her 3-year-old and North American debut for Christophe Clement after placing in multiple stakes in Great Britain last fall, Sail By (Astern {Aus}), who returns to the site of her 12-1 GII Miss Grillo S. upset in October, and Ouraika (Fr) (Zelzal {Fr}), who Graham Motion shipped west to capture the GIII Sweet Life S. two back at Santa Anita Feb. 12.

Another New Graded Winner for Into Mischief at Belmont

Bye Bye (Into Mischief) did it tough from her widest gate in a field of 11 for Saturday's GIII Soaring Softly S. at Belmont Park, but overcame a fair bit of ground loss to remain unbeaten in two turf starts while giving her all-conquering sire his second new graded winner on the afternoon.

Away alertly, the $140,000 Keeneland September yearling raced five or six off the inside as longshot Lexinator (Fed Biz) set the early pace from 'TDN Rising Star' Star Devine (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}). Eric Cancel allowed Bye Bye to improve while deep around the sweeping turn, forcing the hand of Jose Lezcano, who allowed Star Devine to stride into the lead perhaps a bit sooner than he may have liked fully three furlongs from the wire. Bye Bye confronted Star Devine in upper stretch, and although the latter boxed on gamely, Bye Bye had her number and scraped home best of all. Invincible Gal (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) ran on for second ahead of Candace O (Declaration of War) in third.

“I was concerned [about the outside],” said winning trainer Christophe Clement. “I'm a firm believer in saving ground, but there's only so much we can do. She was wide all the way, but she was good enough to overcome it. Eric [Cancel] did the best he could.”

As for what the future may hold, the Frenchman added: “We might try to make her a miler but not too much further than that. I'll need to think about it a little bit. Let's enjoy the moment and go on from there.”

Bye Bye debut in a six-furlong maiden over the Gulfstream main track Feb. 7, weakening to finish sixth after showing some early pace. The word was out when switching to a five-furlong turf test in Hallandale Mar. 21, as the bay validated 19-10 favoritism with a widening 2 3/4-length graduation.

Pedigree Notes:

Bye Bye is the 42nd winner at graded level for Into Mischief and brings the 16-year-old stallion to within three black-type winners of 100. Mighty Mischief took out the GIII Chick Lang S. at Pimlico earlier Saturday. She is simultaneously the 123rd SW and 49th group/graded winner out of a daughter of the late Smart Strike.

The May 14 foal is out of a daughter of Kinsman Farm SW Crystal Current, the dam of $875,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling and SP Savoy Stomp (Medaglia d'Oro) and SP Mi Vida (Distorted Humor), the dam of Gold Standard (Medaglia d'Oro), who cost $1.2 million at FTFFEB in 2018 and earned a pair of graded stakes placings.

Bye Bye's third dam, also raced by George Steinbrenner, was a two-time Grade I winner over seven furlongs and produced GISW Majestic Warrior (A.P. Indy), SW & GSP Evolutionist (El Prado {Ire}) and two other stakes performers.

Garnet, who was acquired by Spendthrift Farm for $550,000 in foal to Uncle Mo at Keeneland November in 2016, was not covered in 2018 and produced a filly by Bolt d'Oro last year before being bred to Into Mischief's son Goldencents for this season.

‘Rising Stars’ Set To Do Battle in Soaring Softly

Arguably the most interesting graded event being held this weekend not named the Preakness, Saturday's seven-furlong GIII Soaring Softly S. has attracted an evenly matched group of 11 sophomore fillies headed by a pair of 'TDN Rising Stars.'

Tobys Heart (Jack Milton) got the 'Rising Star' nod off a spectacular debut over 5 1/2 furlongs of the Matt Winn turf course at Churchill just shy of a year ago, overcoming a slow break to score by the better part of seven lengths. An easy winner of Saratoga's Bolton Landing S. in August, she was forced to miss the Breeders' Cup via injury and was sixth trying two turns for the first time in the Feb. 27 GIII Hercomesthebride S. at Gulfstream. The dark bay was back to her best in her latest, a rallying, half-length success in the TVG Limestone Turf Sprint S. at Keeneland Apr. 9, for which she earned a career-best 88 Beyer Speed Figure. Saturday's trip should hit her right between the eyes.

Star Devine (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) has the right to excel over further, but takes this next logical step off a 'Rising Star' debut at Aqueduct Apr. 8 in which she spotted her rivals a handful of lengths at the break, but sprinted hard in the final furlong and a half to win going away.

Contrarians could easily land on Hit The Woah (Vancouver {Aus}). The daughter of a precocious G1 Golden Slipper winner, the bay broke her maiden at second asking in a rained-off event at Aqueduct last November, defeating no fewer than five next-out winners in the process. Fourth at odds-on in the Jan. 2 Glitter Woman S. over the Gulfstream main track, the $150,000 KEESEP purchase came with a late run to be third, beaten a half-length, in the one-mile Sanibel Island S. in Hallandale Mar. 27. The slight cutback in trip could be to her advantage.

Invincible Gal (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) broke her maiden on debut over a turf sprint trip last August and makes her first appearance since finishing second in the Tepin S. over a mile and a sixteenth at the Big A in late November.
