Australasia Puts Undefeated Record On The Line In Saturday’s Victory Ride

Trainer Brad Cox will send out a pair of contenders entering off last-out stakes wins, as Australasia and Inject will compete as part of an eight-horse field of sophomore fillies in Saturday's Grade 3, $150,000 Victory Ride at 6 1/2 furlongs on the Belmont Park main track.

The 19th edition of the Victory Ride is one of three stakes on the final Saturday of the Belmont spring/summer meet, bolstering a pair of Grade 1 turf contests going 1 1/4-miles, with the $1 million Belmont Derby Invitational for 3-year-olds and the $700,000 Belmont Oaks Invitational for 3-year-old fillies. Both of those contests are the first legs of NYRA's Turf Triple series for sophomores.

Magnifico Stable's Australasia brings an undefeated record through six starts into her graded stakes debut. The Sky Kingdom filly took to Belmont's Big Sandy in her first appearance over the track, besting fellow Victory Ride-rival Bella Sofia by one length in the six-furlong Jersey Girl on June 6, earning a personal-best 92 Beyer Speed Figure.

The Louisiana-bred won her only start of her juvenile year in November at Fair Grounds and is 5-for-5 this year at four tracks, racking up restricted stakes scores in the Louisiana Jewel and the LA Bred Premier Starlet at Delta Downs before winning the Crescent City Oaks at Fair Grounds. A win against open allowance company in April at Churchill Downs set up her successful effort at Belmont. Since the Jersey Girl victory, Australasia has continued to train at the Elmont-based track, breezing four furlongs in 48.63 seconds on Monday.

Joel Rosario will have the call from post 7.

Her stablemate, Louis Wright's Inject, has won her last two starts, including her first stakes triumph with a 5 1/4-length blowout in the six-furlong Goldfinch on May 15 at Prairie Meadows. The daughter of Frosted was a $390,000 purchase at the 2019 Keeneland September Yearling Sale and has started her career with a 3-2-1 ledger through her first eight starts.
Tyler Gaffalione will ride from post 2.

Live Oak Plantation's Souper Sensational will be competing against graded stakes company for a fourth consecutive race. Trained by Hall of Famer Mark Casse, Souper Sensational went 2-for-2 as a juvenile at Woodbine, including a four-length score in the seven-furlong Glorious Song on the all-weather track.

Since then, Souper Sensational earned black type twice as a sophomore, finishing second in the Silvebulletday in January at Fair Grounds and third in the 1 1/16-mile Grade 2 Fair Grounds Oaks in March.

Last out, Souper Sensational, with Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez aboard, ran fourth in the Grade 2 Eight Belles going seven furlongs on April 30 at Churchill Downs.

“She's doing very well and Johnny rode her last time for us and kind of got hung up a little bit, but she hung in and ran well,” Casse said. “She's coming into the race well and should run well. I don't think the distance this time will be a problem.”

Flavien Prat will pick up the mount from post 5.

Team D and Madaket Stables' Miss Brazil ran third as the mutuel favorite in the Jersey Girl, just one length back to Australasia and will step up to graded stakes company for the first time after earning Beyers of 90 or better in four of her six starts for trainer Tony Dutrow.

The daughter of Palace Malice bested optional claimers on April 23 at Belmont in her last start at the Victory Ride distance and will have the services of Jose Ortiz from post 3.

“She seems to be doing very well coming into the race and we're very happy with her,” Dutrow said. “The Jersey Girl didn't go perfect for us, but that's just a day in the office. She came out of it well and she's training well for the Victory Ride. Anywhere from six furlongs to a mile, I don't think it really matters to her.”

The runner up in the Jersey Girl, Bella Sofia, will be making her third career start. The Rudy Rodriguez trainee coasted to an 11 1/4-length debut win on May 6 and was moved up in class exactly one month later where she finished one length behind Australasia and edged Miss Brazil by a head for second.

Owned by Michael Imperio and Vincent Scuderi, Bella Sofia is a daughter of Awesome Patriot. After working four furlongs in 49.43 seconds on Sunday over Belmont's training track, she will now break from the inside post with Manny Franco set to ride.

“She breezed Sunday on the training track and it was nice and solid,” Rodriguez said. “The horses in the field are already seasoned, but she did good against them last time. The last race was very good for her. She has decent ability, so hopefully we can get lucky.”

Douglas Scharbauer's Red Ghost has won three of her four starts, including two in a row following her victory by a nose over next-out allowance winner Euphoric in the Grade 3 Miss Preakness on May 14. The Ghostzapper filly who began her career with an off-the-turf 8 1/2-length score in August at Saratoga for trainer Wesley Ward, will return to New York for the first time since that effort, breaking from post 6 with Hall of Famer John Velazquez aboard.

Rounding out the field is Kinsman Stable's Shop Girl, second in the Any Limit in March last out for trainer Christophe Clement at Gulfstream Park [outermost post 8, Hall of Famer Javier Castellano]; and Brittlyn Stable's Ova Charged, making her first stakes race after starting 2-for-2 for trainer Jose Camejo [post 4, Luis Saez].

The Victory Ride is slated as Race 8 on Saturday's 11-race card. First post is 1 p.m. Eastern.

Louisiana-bred Picks Up Pieces to Stay Unbeaten in Jersey Girl

GI Belmont S.-winning conditioner Brad Cox grabbed one more stakes win for the road Sunday as unbeaten Australasia rallied past rivals to earn a first black-type victory out of Louisiana-bred company. An 8 1/4-length MSW winner at Fair Grounds last November, the dark bay reeled off a pair of dominant stakes scores at Delta Downs before annexing the two-turn Crescent City Oaks back in NOLA Mar. 20. She picked up another big check when shortening up for a GI Kentucky Oaks day allowance at Churchill Apr. 30, but was facing four talented foes who each owned a recent figure edge over her.

Australasia caboosed the field early after a brief delay when favorite Miss Brazil broke through the gate. Bella Sofia clicked off splits of :22.55 and :45.68 and the chalk challenged that one in upper stretch as Australasia still had work to do out wide. It still looked like it'd be one of those two to midstretch, but Australasia soon caught the eye and came flying with a well-timed ride to score by a widening margin.

“She broke good and Brad told me to take my time with her,” said winning rider Joel Rosario. “I had to tip her out a little bit and she came with a nice run at the end.

“She covered a lot of ground and was able to get there. For a second, I was worried they had gotten away from me and I wasn't going to be able to get there, but she did it. It was a very good performance.”

Cox added, “Her last two works gave me the confidence to nominate her. Her last two works were phenomenal, not that she's ever been a bad work horse. It worked out. Joel did a great job, saved some gas and let her roll down the lane.

“I'm not sure she's a six-furlong horse. I think things have to set up for her to win going three-quarters. I think she's more like middle distance. I was uncertain she'd be able to compete outside the Louisiana-bred company. Obviously, she won the open '1X' last time but at the stake level, when you cross the Hudson, the water gets deep. She was able to swim though, so I was proud of her.”

As for whether the GI Longines Test S. at Saratoga Aug. 7 could be on the agenda, the Eclipse-winning conditioner said, “Maybe. That could be a race where things could set up for her too.”

The winner, who breezed in :10 1/5 last year at OBSAPR, is out of a half-sister to GSW High Strike Zone (Smart Strike). She has a 2-year-old half-sister named I Have a Deal (El Deal)–who brought $17,000 at Fasig-Tipton Midlantic–and a yearling half-sister named Tap Iron Fist (Iron Fist). Her dam most recently visited One Liner.

Sky Kingdom Sold To Stand In Ohio

Sky Kingdom, a multiple Grade 3 winner and veteran stallion, has been sold and will stand the upcoming breeding season at Maro Veterinary Services in Youngstown, Ohio, BloodHorse reports.

The 12-year-old son of Empire Maker previously stood at Darby Dan Farm in Lexington, Ky. He was purchased by Ohio-based Gigi Chiandussi in a deal brokered by bloodstock agent Jamie LaMonica, and he will stand for an advertised fee of $2,000.

Sky Kingdom has sired three crops of racing age, with 24 winners and combined progeny earnings of more than $1.2 million. He's perhaps best known as the sire of Wrecking Crew, a multiple Grade 1-placed runner who finished third in the 2019 Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita Park.

Other runners of note by Sky Kingdom include multiple stakes winner Australasia and stakes-placed runners Dunniverse and Mayan Sky.

Sky Kingdom won six of 21 starts during his on-track career for earnings of $532,122. He won two editions of the Grade 3 Tokyo City Cup Stakes, and his graded stakes placings included the G1 Hollywood Gold Cup and two editions of the G3 Cougar II Handicap.

Dialed In, Newcomers Country House And Higher Power, Headline Darby Dan Farm’s 2021 Stallion Roster

Darby Dan Farm has set 2021 stud fees for its roster of 12 stallions that will stand the upcoming breeding season, led by Dialed In who will stand for $15,000 S&N, down from $20,000 a season ago.

The roster also features Tapiture, Klimt, and Breeders' Cup Classic contender Higher Power, new for 2021, who will each stand for $10,000 S&N. Kentucky Derby winner Country House, also new for 2021, Flameaway, and Copper Bullet will stand for $7,500 S&N, while Tale of Ekati and Bee Jersey will stand for $5,000; rounding out the roster will be Sky Kingdom at $2,500, S&N, Tale of Verve at $2,000 S&N, and Dolphus who will stand for private treaty.

Dialed In, the leading freshman sire of 2016 and a perennial leading sire of his crop ever since, is represented in 2020 by Grade 1 winner Get Her Number, winner of the Grade 1 American Pharoah Stakes at Santa Anita. Additional stakes winners this year include Bourbon Calling, winner of the Russell Road Stakes and runner-up in the G3 Ack Ack Stakes, stakes winner and multiple graded stakes-placed Princess Cadey, and six-time stakes winner Chalon, as well as impressive 2-year-old stakes winner and Grade 1-placed Super Stock, and graded stakes-placed runners Finnick the Fierce, placed in the G1 Arkansas Derby and Answer In, placed in the G3 Southwest Stakes.

Tapiture has enjoyed another outstanding season in 2020. His Hopeful Growth was a four-length winner of this year's G2 Monmouth Oaks and placed in the G2 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes. He is also represented by TDN Rising Star Premier Star, winner of the Jersey Shore Stakes and placed in the G2 Amsterdam Stakes, and stakes winners Steph'sfullasugar, Vacherie Girl and 2-year-old stakes winner Chicks Dig Scars. A top-five first-crop sire of 2019 by earnings and No. 2 first-crop sire by winners with 27, he is a leader once again in 2020. Tapiture is the No. 1 second-crop sire by winners (68) and No. 2 by black-type winners (5) and black-type horses (12). His top earner this year is Jesus' Team, who finished a rallying third in the Preakness Stakes.

Klimt, Quality Road's fastest Grade 1-winning 2-year-old, saw first-crop yearlings sell for $160,000, $120,000, $115,000, etc. this year. One of America's best 2-year-olds of 2016, Klimt was a powerful winner of the G1 Del Mar Futurity, where he ran seven furlongs in 1:21.80, marking the second-fastest time since 2004, behind only American Pharoah.

Higher Power, a dominant 5 1/4-length winner of the 2019 G1 Pacific Classic at Del Mar, is a five-time winner of more than $1.5 million heading into this year's Breeders' Cup. Higher Power has been a gem of consistency competing strictly in top company since his Pacific Classic triumph with graded stakes placings in the Breeders' Cup Classic, G1 Hollywood Gold Cup, G1 Awesome Again Stakes, and G2 San Diego Handicap.

Also new to the roster is Kentucky Derby winner Country House. An earner of more than $2.1 million, Country House is by multiple champion and classic winner Lookin At Lucky, a son of two-time champion sire and sire of sires Smart Strike. In addition to his Derby victory, Country House finished second to eventual classic winner War of Will in the G2 Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds and was third in the G1 Arkansas Derby.

Darby Dan will once again be offering various incentive programs in 2021 to provide value to breeders, including Profit Protection, Share the Upside, Black-Type Bonanza, and Goldmine 20/20 Match Program.
