Coronation Glory For Siyouni’s TDN Rising Star Tahiyra

Coming through in a highly tactical renewal of the G1 Coronation S. at Royal Ascot on Friday, The Aga Khan's TDN Rising Star Tahiyra (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}–Tarana {Ire}, by Cape Cross {Ire}) showed her class to widen her portfolio which already included an Irish 1000 Guineas and Moyglare Stud S. Sent off the 8-13 favourite to bridge a 45-year gap for Dermot Weld in this prestige event, the half-sister to Rosewell House's recent superstar Tarnawa (Ire) (Shamardal) was instantly faced with adversity and a conundrum for Chris Hayes as she missed the break a fraction and ended up in rear off the steady pace.

With Ryan Moore content to saunter in front on Meditate (Ire) (No Nay Never), Hayes opted to sit chilly at the back to save his mount's acceleration as he had with the same target to aim at in the Moyglare in very different conditions back in September. Unleashing a 11.59 penultimate split down the outer as she and Sounds Of Heaven (GB) (Kingman {GB}) made a sandwich of Remarquee (GB) (Kingman {GB}) approaching the furlong pole, Tahiyra had forged ahead by the time the latter was in full flight. Despite Remarquee's eye-catching flourish, a length separated them at the line with a head back to Sounds Of Heaven in third.

There was an inquiry, but the result remained unaltered and Siyouni had his notable St James's Palace-Coronation double. “I can't wait to ride this filly in a truly-run mile race and see what she is really capable of,” Hayes said in the immediate aftermath. “She slipped coming out of the gates, it was Plan B and it was a slow pace so she did well considering she was running at a quickening pace. I knew this filly could over-race and that I could be there too soon, so it wasn't going to be straightforward and I just had to ride her like she was the best filly and the fastest in the field.”

 

For Weld, who saddled Sutton Place to win this in an entirely different era as a young man at the end of his twenties in 1978, this 18th Royal success was proof of the unending expertise of the septuagenarian. “I have been very fortunate in life,” he said. “She has brilliant speed and I suppose she's learning more about racing and getting more professional. I thought she won fair and square. Her sister was a brilliant racemare and this one is equally good. They are different sorts, this one has more pace. I enjoy so much training these fillies, I know the families and do my best to train them.”

Weld is set on giving Tahiyra a break now, after three tough encounters since the start of last month and having openly expressed that Newmarket's 1000 Guineas was coming a touch too soon. “I think the plan always was to give her a nice holiday, a nice break,” he added. “She's had a very busy spring and early summer and we will look at a programme for her in the autumn.”

While Remarquee lost some momentum when checked at the furlong pole, her trainer Ralph Beckett was not feeling unlucky. “She has run her legs off today,” he said. “By the time she did get rolling, the gap was closing–you don't see many of ours with a sheepskin noseband and she wears it because she is still green and has not had that much racing. I am not disappointed with her in the slightest. The Guineas was a non-event–she had only had two starts and is a slow learner! She will go for the Falmouth next, I think that will suit.”

Sounds Of Heaven's jockey Ronan Whelan said, “It was a great run. On paper it looked straightforward from my point of view and thankfully the race went like that. My filly has run a belter and I think there is more to come from her. She is not the finished article yet. She will be better as the year goes on.”

The second dam Tarakala (Ire) (Dr Fong) captured the Listed Galtres S. and was third in the G3 Noblesse S. and is related to the G1 Prix Royal-Oak hero and G1 Prix du Cadran runner-up Tiraaz (Lear Fan), the G1 Phoenix S. heroine Damson (Ire) (Entrepreneur {GB}) who took the G2 Queen Mary S. at this meeting in 2004 and that year's G3 Norfolk S. winner Blue Dakota (Ire) (Namid {GB}). Siyouni’s TDN Rising Star Paddington Makes History In The St James’s Palace

In the battle of the 2000 Guineas winners in Tuesday's G1 St James's Palace S., it was the Irish Classic victor Paddington (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}–Modern Eagle {Ger}, by Montjeu {Ire}) who proved much the best as he overwhelmed the Newmarket hero Chaldean (GB) (Frankel {GB}) to make Aidan O'Brien Royal Ascot's winningmost trainer on 83.

Settled behind the leaders from his wide draw by Ryan Moore as Frankie took the Juddmonte representative to the front, the 11-5 second favourite moved to his chief rival with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining and was cajoled clear to score by an impressive 3 3/4 lengths. Chaldean finished like a non-stayer, but the 13-8 market-leader held on for second by a neck from Charyn (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}).

“He's a very good colt who is improving and improving and has a big engine and a lot of class,” Moore said after registering his 75th Royal success. “Maybe I should have ridden him colder, as he quickened up past them and then probably shut down. He took me there quite easy and, when he put his foot down, he found plenty.”

Delivered to the Irish 2000 Guineas via Naas's Madrid H. and The Curragh's Listed Tetrarch S., Paddington came into the Curragh Classic with a lower profile than usual for his stable only to emerge very much the real deal en route to this moment of truth. Forced to travel wide from his outside post, he fortunately proved more tractable than he had in the initial stages of the Irish Guineas and was at least granted a true pace with Frankie going out to put the gun to the heads of his rivals.

Heading to the three pole, Chaldean looked strong but a furlong later the writing was already on the wall with Frankie at work and Ryan looming large to his right. Whereas Andrew Balding's charge tended to tread water from there, Paddington was hands and heels to the line to win with comfort. Intriguingly, the winner was faster than the runner-up for six of the eight furlongs and for all of the last five in a race that ended up being run too fast too early.

O'Brien, who now boasts nine St James's Palace S., was opening the door to a program over more than a mile in time. “He is able to quicken very well–that is his big thing,” he said. “John [Magnier] said to me that this horse would get further than a mile if you wanted him to, no problem. The lads will have to think about whether they want to go to Goodwood [for the Sussex S.]. He has all the options, because he has the speed to be a top miler as we see, so it's very exciting.”

Andrew Balding said of Chaldean, “Frankie has felt he probably just overdid it a little early, but I'm not sure whether that would have made a difference to the result. They are two very high-class horses.”

Roger Varian said of Charyn, who put up a personal best in third, “I am delighted with how he ran–he seems to be improving. He was beaten the same distance today by Paddington as he was at The Curragh. He's versatile, tough and genuine. I don't think he's out of place in this company and I think he'll keep improving all year.”

Bred and raised at Monceaux for the Wildensteins, Paddington who was the joint-second highest-priced lot when realising €420,000 at the 2021 Arqana October Sale is currently the last known foal out of the Listed Prix Belle de Nuit winner Modern Eagle (Ger) (Montjeu {Ire}). Her first progeny was Masterpiece (Fr) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}), who was twice listed-placed in France while she is a daughter of the G1 Prix de Diane runner-up Millionaia (Ire) (Peintre Celebre) and a half to the Listed Vintage Tipple S. winner and G3 Loughbrown S.-placed Mighty Blue (Fr) by Montjeu's son Authorized (Ire). Millionaia is out of the G1 Prix Saint-Alary heroine Moonlight Dance (Alysheba), who is also the second dam of the G2 Prix du Conseil de Paris scorer Ming Dynasty (Fr) (King's Best) while the fourth dam Madelia (Fr) (Caro) scored three times at the highest level including in the Diane.

Observations: Son of Moonlight Cloud Debuts on Jockey Club Undercard

Tahiyra Goes One Better In The Irish 1000 Guineas

Making amends for a narrow eclipse at Newmarket, The Aga Khan's Tahiyra (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}) returned to re-establish her dominance at The Curragh on Sunday, providing Dermot Weld with a sixth G1 Tattersalls Irish 1000 Guineas and completing a weekend Classic double for her sire in the process.

So impressive when taking the G1 Moyglare S. here in September, the TDN Rising Star was quicker away here than in the 1000 Guineas and able to draft in behind Meditate (Ire) (No Nay Never) and that runner's stablemate and pacemaker Dower House (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

Delivered by Chris Hayes to tackle Meditate approaching the furlong pole, the 2-5 favourite asserted to confirm the Moyglare form by 1 1/2 lengths, with Jim Bolger's 150-1 shot Comhra (Ire) (Vocalised) a strong-closing head away in third.

Weld said, “She was in a pocket, but when you have a very good horse they have the pace to get out of that pocket. I was always comfortable.

“The plan was to hold on to her and ride her for speed. My only concern was whether she would let herself down on the quick ground. They have done a good job here.

“We'll see how she comes out of this race and obviously we will think about the Coronation S.”

The Aga Khan's daughter, Princess Zara, was in attendance to witness Tahiyra secure a commanding success. Her brown and green silks were also carried by the fourth,  Tarawa (Ire) (Shamardal), who supplied Weld with a one-four in the race. 

Princess Zara said, “She was very brave and she kept at it and won beautifully. Looking at what she did today, and Paddington yesterday, I think we have a good set of Guineas there. To have a homebred like this is lovely to see.”

Pat Downes, manager of the Aga Khan's Gilltown Stud, echoed the sentiments of Princess Zara and lauded the Haras de Bonneval-based Siyouni. 

He said, “These are the kind of results that a stallion needs to achieve to be put in the elite bracket worldwide. They are two very big wins for the horse this weekend and he's just a very good stallion, we knew that already, but they have to keep on producing these big results to maintain their elite bracket status. Thankfully, this has been a great weekend for Siyouni.”
