Brother of St Mark’s Basilica Set For Curragh Bow

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Sunday's Observations features a brother to five-time Group 1 winner St Mark's Basilica (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}).

14.00 Curragh, Mdn, €16,500, 2yo, 7fT
Bob Scarborough's prolific mare Cabaret (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) has excelled in the paddocks with her nine foals headed by MG1SW sire Magna Grecia (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and five-time Group 1-winning phenomenon St Mark's Basilica (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}). Next in line is the Jessica Harrington-trained PARIS LIGHTS (IRE) (Siyouni {Fr}), a full-brother to the latter and a 650,000gns vendor buy-back at last year's Tattersalls October Book 1, who gets the assistance of Conor Hoban in this debut for a yard firing on all cylinders. He encounters three from Ballydoyle, and more, in an intriguing 17-runner affair. Coolmore and Westerberg's China Seas (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) is a full-brother to elite-level winners Hermosa (Ire), Hydrangea (Ire) and The United States (Ire) and also hails from the family of Saturday's G1 Juddmonte Cheveley Park S. heroine Tenebrism (Caravaggio). Set to be partnered by Emmet McNamara, the bay is accompanied by Aidan O'Brien stablemates Cougar (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), an unraced son of G1 Prix Marcel Boussac and G1 Criterium International placegetter Promise To Be True (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), and Temple of Artemis (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who is a full-brother to three stakes performers headed by G1 Irish Derby and G1 Gold Cup runner-up Kingfisher (Ire). Elsewhere on the cast list, Joseph O'Brien has nominated another debutant of note and introduces Alvaro Odriozola Arzallus' Sir Antonino (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who is a 300,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 son of G3 Sceptre S. third and G1 Cheveley Park S. fourth Terror (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}).

14.20 Epsom, Nov, £19,000, 2yo, 8f 113yT
Godolphin's GOLDSPUR (IRE) (Dubawi {Ire}), who is a homebred son of G1 Prix Vermeille second Pomology (Arch), dished out a 6 1/2-length shellacking to Wolsey (Kitten's Joy), himself kin to last year's GI American Oaks heroine Duopoly (Animal Kingdom), when earning 'TDN Rising Stardom' in a Sept. 15 one-mile test at Sandown last time. Upped in trip and taking an early sighter of Tattenham Corner here, he is confronted by a field of four prior winners, headed by Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum's similarly unbeaten Merlin's Lady (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), who is a 320,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 full-sister to MGSW GI Belmont Derby Invitational third Hunting Horn (Ire) and comes back off a seven-furlong Ayr debut score for the Kevin Ryan stable last month.

Siyouni’s St Mark’s Basilica Prevails in Irish Champion Thriller

Saturday's G1 Irish Champion S. at Leopardstown may have been short on quantity, but was certainly not lacking in quality as Coolmore's St Mark's Basilica (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) maintained his winning streak at the highest level with a fifth such triumph in a thrilling finale to the €1,000,000 10-furlong contest. Backing up a juvenile high in Newmarket's G1 Dewhurst S., the 3-year-old bay has carried all before him during a banner sophomore campaign,  which has also witnessed victories in the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains, G1 Prix du Jockey Club and G1 Coral-Eclipse. Forced to sidestep last month's G1 Juddmonte International after suffering a minor setback at home, he had to dig deep to deny three-time elite-level victrix Tarnawa (Ire) (Shamardal) and G1 2000 Guineas and G1 St James's Palace S. hero Poetic Flare (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}) in a three-way drive. Chantal Regalado-Gonzalez's G1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis third Patrick Sarsfield (Fr) (Australia {GB}) set the tone with a clear advantage through halfway, ahead of Poetic Flare, the eventual winner and Tarnawa as the field maintained its order until turning for home. Bustled along by Ryan Moore passing the quarter-mile marker, the 5-6 favourite drifted wide towards the stands' side rail soon after and kept on in resolute fashion to deny the even-wider effort of Tarnawa by 3/4-of-a-length with Poetic Flare failing to maintain his early-straight advantage and getting edged out of second by a nose. The track's stewards enquired into possible inteference between the first two, but allowed the result to stand after a lengthy deliberation.

“He's a special horse, he relaxes and quickens and has all the determination from Galileo and all the speed from Siyouni,” said winning trainer Aidan O'Brien after extending his record haul in the contest to 10. “Ryan [Moore] gave him a great ride and I'm delighted. They set off at a nice pace, Kevin [Manning] was in second and he steadied it down to get himself straightened up and set up. The pace went out of the race completely before they turned in [for home], which was unusual, and they sprinted up the straight. He did well because it was very tactical and I would imagine the fractions for those last couple of furlongs were fairly rapid. He had a bit of catch-up to do, after [being forced to miss York] the last day, and one thing we knew is that he quickens. That's what he's always had and his strong qualities are that he relaxes and can really turn it on. He's just an exceptional horse and we're very lucky to have him. All the lads at home have done a great job to get him back here today after the last day. The plan was to go to York and then come here. After that we were going to see what way he came out of it and see what way we were going to go.”

Looking to possible future targets, the Ballydoyle conditioner continued, “He has a lot of options, he can go back to a mile or go a mile-and-a-quarter and all those [top-level] races have to be there. There may be a little bit of a problem with the [G1] Queen Elizabeth II S. [at Ascot on Champions Day]. We know that he handles soft ground, but Ascot can be run in very bad ground.”

St Mark's Basilica is one of two Group 1 winners produced by G3 Silver Flash S. victrix Cabaret (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), the other being G1 2000 Guineas and G1 Vertem Futurity-winning sire Magna Grecia (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}). Cabaret has also produced an unraced 2-year-old full-brother to St Mark's Basilica, named Paris Lights (Ire), and a weanling colt by Kingman (GB). She is a half-sister to G3 Solario S. victor Drumfire (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) and stakes-winning G2 Gimcrack S. runner-up Ho Choi (GB) (Pivotal {GB}). St Mark Basilica's third dam Fife (Ire) (Lomond) ran third in the Listed Lupe S. and is the second dam of G3 Park S. victrix and G1 Moyglare S. runner-up Ugo Fire (Ire) (Bluebird). Fife is a half-sister to Piffle (GB) (Shirley Heights {GB}), herself the dam of GI Hollywood Turf Cup S. hero Frenchpark (GB) (Fools Holme) and G1 Prix Vermeille heroine Pearly Shells (GB) (Efisio {GB}). This is also the family of the G1 St Leger hero Mountain Lodge (GB) (Blakeney {GB}).

Siyouni’s Acer Alley Prevails in the Rochette

Largely unconsidered as the 26-1 outsider of six, Merry Fox Stud's homebred 2-year-old filly Acer Alley (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}) created waves with a late burst for glory in Sunday's G3 Prix La Rochette at ParisLongchamp. She had previously bettered a June 11 first-up fourth going seven furlongs at Compiegne with a June 21 Saint-Cloud maiden score over the same trip in her only other start last time and raced fifth of the six runners from flagfall here. Nudged into contention with 500 metres remaining, Acer Alley came under increased pressure once inside the final quarter mile and displayed a smart turn of foot in the closing stages to swoop late for a career high. At the line, Acer Alley held a half-length advantage from Making Moovies (Ire) (Dabirsim {Fr}), who edged out British raider El Bodegon (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) by a short neck for second, and will now point to next month's G1 Prix Marcel Boussac for her next outing.

“The idea was to go to the [G3] Prix Six Perfections in Deauville, after she won at Saint-Cloud last time, but I felt she was not quite ready for that race,” revealed winning trainer Francis Graffard. “She just needed more time and the owner [Craig Bennett] trusted my judgement. She came back right again and had been working very well at home, but you never know what might happen on the track as this was only her third career start and facing colts for the first time. We thought we had to give it a try to see if we had any chance of going for a Group 1 on Arc weekend. The owner is a breeder, he would love to win the [G1] Prix Marcel Boussac and, if she's well, we will go for that.”

Acer Alley becomes the second pattern-race winner produced by an unraced half-sister to the Merry Fox Stud operation's G1 Moyglare Stud S. victrix Cursory Glance (GB) (Distorted Humor). The March-foaled homebred bay is a half-sister to last term's GI Turf Classic hero Digital Age (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire})–himself a 325,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 yearling in 2017–and a weanling colt by Dubawi (Ire). Her second dam Time Control (GB) (Sadler's Wells) is a full-sister to G2 Prix de Malleret victrix Time On (GB), who threw G3 Oh So Sharp S. winner Mot Juste (Distorted Humor). Time Control, in turn, is a daughter of G3 Musidora S. victrix and and G1 Prix de Diane and G1 Nassau S. third Time Away (Ire) (Darshaan {GB}), herself a granddaughter of MG1SW distaffer Time Charter (Ire) (Saritamer).

Siyouni’s Mise En Scene Swoops For Prestige Triumph

Qatar Racing's unbeaten 2-year-old filly Mise En Scene (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}) backed up a four-length debut score at Haydock last month with victory on black-type bow in Saturday's G3 Tote Prestige S. at Goodwood and provided trainer James Ferguson with a landmark score in the seven-furlong fillies' test. The 7-1 chance went forward from the break and claimed a prominent slot along the rail behind the leading duo after the initial exchanges. Angled outside for a clear passage passing the quarter-mile marker, she was shaken up approaching the final furlong and produced a strong late burst to deny 7-2 favourite Daneh (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) by a neck in the dying strides.

“We've always really liked her at home and to get her from Sheikh Fahad, given her pedigree, was a real honour,” said Ferguson after securing the first pattern-race winner of his fledgling career. “She looks like she'll make a really nice 3-year-old to 4-year-old, but just came to hand ready for Haydock and she was impressive [on debut] there. That kept the dream alive for everyone at home and black-type was then the route. I knew she'd taken a step forward for her first run and it was great to see her finish out like that. I'll have to talk to Sheikh Fahad and the team before making a plan, but the [Oct. 8 G1] Fillies' Mile [at Newmarket] looks an option. She's obviously the best I've had and it feels brilliant.”

Mise En Scene, half-sister to a weanling filly by Zoustar (Aus), is the third of four surviving foals and lone scorer produced by an unraced half-sister to four black-type performers headed by G1 1000 Guineas heroine Speciosa (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) and GIII Stars & Stripes Breeders' Cup Turf H. winner Major Rhythm (Rhythm). The February-foaled bay's second dam Specifically (Sky Classic), whose descendants also include G1 Irish Derby third Festive Cheer (Fr) (Montjeu {Ire}) and this term's stakes-winning G3 Prix Six Perfections runner-up (Zellie (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}), is kin to MG1SW distaffer Pride (Fr) (Peintre Celebre) and G3 Prix de Flore victrix and G1 Prix Ganay third Fate (Fr) (Teofilo {Ire}). Pride has produced two black-type performers of her own, namely G2 Grand Prix de Chantilly and G2 Prix du Conseil de Paris victor One Foot In Heaven (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) and G3 Prix du Prince d'Orange and G3 Pride S. runner-up Queen (Fr) (Kingman {GB}).
