Ireland’s Miss Amulet Back In Kentucky For Saturday’s Franklin-Simpson

While everyone has to ship to Kentucky Downs, Miss Amulet had the longest journey. The distinctive roan filly came from Ireland through Paris to Chicago to run in the G2 Franklin-Simpson on Saturday's program that features five graded stakes.

Miss Amulet returns to Kentucky, where she was third in the G1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Keeneland in November, to face a field of males in the 6 ½-furlong test for 3-year-olds. Last year, the Irish-bred daughter of Sir Prancelot trained by Ken Condon brought a growing reputation with her to the U.S. This time, she is looking to bounce back from a pair of disappointing performances in Europe. Julien Leparoux, who was up for the Breeders' Cup, has the mount from post 5 in the full field of 12.

Mark Bourke, a member of Condon's staff, brought Miss Amulet back to the commonwealth this week.

“She's a rags-to-riches filly,” Bourke said. “She did very well as a 2-year-old. She won the Lowther (the G2 six-furlong Sky Bet Lowther at York) was second and third in two other Group 1 races, including the third here in the Breeders' Cup in November.”

The big performances in the graded stakes made her a valuable racing and breeding prospect and she was purchased by Coolmore partner Michael Tabor in late summer 2020. She runs in the name of Tabor's wife. Doreen and has stayed with Condon, who has had her throughout her career.

This year, Miss Amulet has not been as effective. She was 13th of 14 in the G1 one-mile Irish 1,000 Guineas over heavy ground on May 23. A planned run in the G1 Commonwealth Cup on June 18 at Royal Ascot was scuttled by heavy rain. In her most recent start, she was well back in the G1 July Cup on July 10 at Newmarket.

In an interview with The Racing Post, Condon said: “She hasn't been at her best in her couple of runs this season, but it'll be interesting to see how she gets on because she's in great form and has been doing well of late. She's only run twice and there were certainly mitigating circumstances on her first start of 2021 in the Irish 1,000 Guineas.”

Condon also said: “I'd imagine she's going to be covered by an Ashford stallion in the spring, but if she showed up well over there you'd think she could end up running again over there. There are opportunities for a filly like her in the States.”

Miss Amulet was purchased as a weanling at auction for $1,134 and purchased as a yearling by Colm Griffin for $9,259. The Tabor group acquired her in a private sale after the Lowther victory. She was beaten a half-length in the G1 Juddmonte Cheveley Park at Newmarket before going on to the Breeders' Cup.

Bourke has twice had Miss Amulet out on the Kentucky Downs track, which resembles European courses and is unlike any other in North America. She is scheduled for another visit Friday morning.

“It rides lovely,” he said. “It's a rare opportunity that you can do this here in America, a turf-only course. They've done a great job here. They've been very welcoming and helpful. Hopefully we'll have a little bit of luck.”

Sir Prancealot Tops 2021 Stud Roster At Rancho San Miguel

Rancho San Miguel has set 2021 stud fees for its roster of seven stallions, led by the globetrotting Sir Prancealot (IRE) whose fee will remain a California-leading $15,000 for his second season at stud in California.

Sir Prancealot, who sired progeny which won stakes in at least 6 countries in 2020, will return from Cornerstone Stud in Australia after breeding 105 mares in California in 2020.  His offspring have shown a propensity for high quality racing in North America with 17% Graded Stakes winners and 53% Stakes Horses earning an average earning per starters of over $210,000 from his only 17 starters.  They performed very well in the Breeders Cup last weekend when Miss Amulet ran a good third in the BC Juvenile Turf S-G1 in her U.S. debut and Lady Prancealot ran a very close fourth in the BC Filly & Mares Turf-G1. They have also starred in the sales ring at Keeneland this week when the all 3 race mares by Sir Prancealot offered sold for an average over $766,000 led by Grade I winner Lady Prancealot, who sold for $1,600,000.

Danzing Candy, a brilliantly fast multiple Grade 2 winning son of Twirling Candy who bred 331 mares in his first 3 crop and whose first crop will be two-year-olds next year, will have his fee remain at $5,000.  His yearlings have been well received in California, Washington and Florida sales, topped by a $115,000 colt at the 2020 OBS October Yearling Sale.

Curlin to Mischief, perhaps the best bred stallion in California being a ½ brother to Into Mischief, Beholder and Mendelssohn, will have his fee remain at $3,500. His two-year-old son, Good With People, is a multiple stakes winner of $199,000 and is the current favorite to win California-bred Champion Two-Year-Old colt in 2020.  In the sales ring, another colt was sold for $85,000, which was among the highest prices at the recent 2020 Fasig-Tipton California Fall Yearling Sale.  His fee remains at $3,500.

Grade 1 Winner Lady Prancealot To Be Offered At Keeneland November Sale

Grade 1 winner Lady Prancealot, who was third in the Sept. 26 Grade 1 Rodeo Drive at Santa Anita, will be offered as a racing or broodmare prospect during the premier Book 1 of Keeneland's November Breeding Stock Sale on Nov. 9.

Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent, will consign the 4-year-old daughter of Sir Prancealot, who has earned more than $640,000 while competing against the best of her division.

Lady Prancealot's connections all praise the filly for her talent and consistency.

“She's been unbelievably sound,” co-owner Michael Iavarone said. “She hasn't missed a beat. She's pretty much taken us everywhere we wanted to go.”

“Lady Prancealot has taken our partners on a great ride,” said Phillip Shelton, racing manager of co-owner Medallion Racing. “She won our first graded stakes at Keeneland in the G3 Pin Oak Valley View before going on to win the G1 American Oaks. We formed our partnership to have fillies like her and count ourselves lucky that she shows up every time.”

“Lady Prancealot has been unlucky this year,” trainer Richard Baltas said. “She has run big races but never gets any pace to run at. She's all class and just needs some speed up front to get her back in the winner's circle at the top level.”

“Lady Prancealot represents a great opportunity to race or breed in 2021,” said Mark Taylor, Taylor Made's vice president of marketing and public sales operations. “Her race potential speaks for itself, and her female family has been consistently producing top-class horses on both sides of the Atlantic for the last 50 years.”

Lady Prancealot began her career in England, where she was first, second or third in her initial three starts. She arrived in the U.S. and was second in her first two races, the Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf and Surfer Girl at Santa Anita. Those performances earned the Southern California-based filly a start in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Churchill Downs.

In 2019, Lady Prancealot faced a number of division standouts, winning the G3 Honeymoon at Santa Anita and finishing third to Grade 1 winner Cambier Parc in the G1 Del Mar Oaks Presented by The Jockey Club. Sent to the East Coast, she contested the rich Jockey Club Oaks Invitational at Belmont Park.

During Keeneland's Fall Meet, Lady Prancealot captured the 1 1/16-mile G3 Pin Oak Valley View by three-quarters of a length. That performance set her up for a triumphant return home, where she was the 8-5 favorite for the prestigious G1 American Oaks at Santa Anita and won by a half-length.

This year, Lady Prancealot has competed in Grade 1 and Grade 2 competition in Southern California with a runner-up finish in Del Mar's G2 John C. Mabee on Sept. 5 and a third in the aforementioned Rodeo Drive.

“What differentiates her is she has an explosive turn of foot,” Iavarone said. “I love horses that have that style. You think she has no chance, and all of a sudden here she comes out of nowhere. Horses like that really make the heart beat. They're really exciting. She never not shows up. She puts in her run every single time.”

Lady Prancealot has an international pedigree with winning connections in the U.S. and abroad. Also representing her sire, Sir Prancealot, is Beau Recall, who recently won the G2 Churchill Distaff Turf Mile for the second consecutive year to increase her earnings to more than $1.4 million. In August, another daughter, Irish-bred 2-year-old Miss Amulet, took the G2 Sky Bet Lowther at York in England and is considered a top performer in her division.

In the U.S., Sir Prancealot also is represented by Grade 2 winner Madam Dancealot and Keeneland's 2019 Limestone Turf Sprint winner, Ginger Nut.

Lady Prancealot's female family features several successful international runners. Among them are Shadwell Stable's homebred Almanaar, a Group 3 winner in France who became a Grade 1 winner in the U.S. and has competed in the Breeders' Cup World Championships; and Almanaar's dam, Baqah, a Group 2 winner in France and a Group 1-placed runner in England.

“Keeneland is very pleased to offer Lady Prancealot in the November Sale, which is a key source of bloodstock for buyers from around the world,” Keeneland President-Elect and Interim Head of Sales Shannon Arvin said. “Lady Prancealot has a special connection to Keeneland through her victory in the Pin Oak Valley View, and we will be excited to see her in the sales ring.”

Beau Recall Runs Down Favored Newspaperofrecord In Churchill Distaff Turf Mile

Slam Dunk Racing and Medallion Racing's Beau Recall was impressive late to upset Saturday's Grade 2 Churchill Distaff Turf Mile at odds of 8-1, defending her 2019 title with a late move to pass 1-2 favorite Newspaperofrecord and win by about two lengths on the wire. Ridden by Manny Franco, the 6-year-old daughter of Sir Prancealot covered a mile over firm turf in 1:35.39.

It was trainer Brad Cox's fifth win in the past two days at Churchill Downs, after saddling a pair of maiden special weight winners in Travel Column and Essential Quality, Monomoy Girl to win the G1 La Troienne, and Shedaresthedevil to win the G1 Kentucky Oaks.

“I thought she had a big shot midway down the lane,” said Cox. “She did exactly what Manny (Franco) was instructed to do. He actually did exactly what Irad (Ortiz Jr.) did in the race last year when she won it. The race in California (the Grade II Yellow Ribbon Handicap) she never had a shot. I want to thank those owners for allowing her to run here at Churchill. She loves it here. We sort of knew coming into this week that it could be a big week for our stable. This is our home and to have this sort of weekend on the biggest stage in the sport is really special.”

Ridden for the first time by Javier Castellano, the Chad Brown-trained Newspaperofrecord went straight to the lead out of the gate. She pulled away to an easy two-length lead around the clubhouse turn, setting her own fractions of :23.99 and :47.93 under a moderate hold. Juliet Foxtrot and Belle Laura were up close in second and third, while La Signare, Beau Recall, and Daddy Is a Legend made up the rest of the field.

Rounding the far turn, La Signare was making up a lot of ground on the outside but never appeared to be a threat to the loose-on-the-lead Newspaperofrecord. The heavy favorite pulled away by several lengths at the top of the stretch, but appeared to idle on the front and was caught by the giant late rally of Beau Recall.

Beau Recall blew by Newspaperofrecord in the final sixteenth, crossing the wire about two lengths in front. Newspaperofrecord had to settle for second, with La Signare checking in third. Juliet Foxtrot finished fourth.

“She knows how to get it done,” Franco said. “I just rode her with confidence. I let her have the target in front of us. I was patient until we got in the clear and that's when I asked her to run and she just exploded.”

Bred in Ireland by Tom Wallace, Beau Recall is out of the Great Commotion mare Greta d'Argent. She was a $19,025 yearling at the Tattersalles Ireland sale, and broke her maiden in her home country before shipping to the United States. Under the care of trainer Simon Callaghan, the mare tallied a Grade 2 victory and a trio of graded stakes placings through November of 2018, and then was transferred to trainer Brad Cox.

Beau Recall won a listed stakes at the Fair Grounds, then was entered in the 2019 Keeneland January sale but did not meet her reserve when bidding stopped at $385,000. She returned to the track and racked up wins in the G2 Distaff Turf Mile and G2 Yellow Ribbon in 2019, and this year's edition of the Distaff Turf Mile is her first victory of 2020.

Overall, Beau Recall's record stands at 8-8-0 from 29 starts for earnings of over $1.4 million.
