Maxim Rate Overpowers Competitition In Goldikova Stakes

A menacing presence a quarter mile from home, trainer Simon Callaghan's Maxim Rate cruised to the lead from there and marched to an emphatic 2 1/2-length win in Sunday's Grade 2, $200,000 Goldikova Stakes at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif.  Ridden by Umberto Rispoli, the 4-year-old daughter of Exchange Rate got one mile on turf in 1:33.85.

Ridden to a pair of wins by Rispoli this past summer at Del Mar, Maxim Rate was most recently second in the G1 Rodeo Drive Stakes at a mile and one quarter on the Santa Anita turf Sept. 26 when ridden by Luis Saez.  With Rispoli back aboard today, she was into the bridle while third, about 1 1/2 lengths off the lead coming to the quarter pole, wheeled three-wide turning for home and went on to win in a fashion that indicated she could've prevailed at any distance.

“I think she has no problem with the distance,” said Rispoli.  “I think Simon knows what he is doing.  We know that she can go further…and that's why I wasn't afraid to go a mile and three-wide.  Everybody knows I like to save ground, but that was not the case (today).  I knew that she could go further and she responded really well.  When she took the lead, she kind of pulled herself up a little bit, but she's definitely improving and I think she still can improve.”

With pacesetter Raymundos Secret dominating the wagering, Maxim Rate, who had been installed as the 8-5 morning line favorite, was a considerable overlay at 2-1 in a field of seven fillies and mares and paid $6.80, $4.00 and $2.40.

“She was always a very good filly, won her first time out and then she just plateaued a little bit as a 3-year-old, so we gave her some time off,” said Callaghan.  “Thankfully the owners were really patient with her and that really helped her develop.  I think she definitely is a better filly now, but I honestly think there's more scope for improvement.  Obviously a very exciting filly for the future…

“I'm thinking the Matriarch (G1, one mile turf on Nov. 29) at Del Mar.  That was actually our initial plan.  After her last race I sat down with all the owners and that was the plan.  She came out of her last race so well so I said, 'To be honest, we kinda need to run this filly because she is doing great.'  Thankfully it worked out.  It was a great win today.”

Owned by Nick Cosato's Slam Dunk Racing and James D. Branham, Maxim Rate, a G3 turf stakes winner at age 3, notched her second graded victory and her fifth win from 13 overall starts.  Out of the Unbridled's Song mare Catch My Eye, Maxim Rate picked up $120,000 for the win, increasing her earnings to $402,185.

Next to last after the first half mile, Zee Drop rallied well to outfinish Tonahutu by one length under Mario Gutierrez.  Off at 21-1, Zee Drop paid $14.20 and $6.00.

Irish-bred Tonahutu, who laid a close second to Raymundos Secret heading to the quarter pole and proved third-best, finishing a half length in front of “Raymundo.”  Off at 6-1 with Abel Cedillo up, Tonahutu paid $4.60 to show.

In search of her third consecutive win under Flavien Prat, Raymundos Secret had no apparent excuses in a disappointing effort at even money.

Fractions on the race were 22.79, 46.20, 1:09.92 and 1:21.91.

Live racing will resume at Santa Anita with the track's traditional Winter/Spring opener on Saturday, Dec. 26.  For more information, please visit santaanita.com or call (626) 574-RACE.

Raymundos Secret Chasing Third Straight Win In Sunday’s Goldikova

In top form and bidding for her third consecutive win, trainer Phil D'Amato's Raymundos Secret, along with Simon Callaghan's classy Maxim Rate, head a field of seven fillies and mares three and up going one mile on turf in Sunday's Grade 2, $200,000 Goldikova Stakes at Santa Anita.

A gutty gate to wire winner of the Grade 2 John C. Mabee Stakes going a mile and one eighth on turf Sept. 5, Raymundos Secret should relish the cutback in distance, as she's won four out of her five starts at a flat mile.

Second in the Grade 1 Rodeo Drive at a mile and one quarter on turf here Sept. 26, Maxim Rate has three wins from six tries at one mile on grass and will be ridden by Umberto Rispoli, who guided her to a pair of wins this past summer at Del Mar.

RAYMUNDOS SECRET

Owner: Sierra Racing & Sterling Stables, LLC

Trainer: Phil D'Amato

Idle since October of last year, this 4-year-old Florida-bred filly was off at 4-5 and stalked the pace en route to taking a second condition allowance by a neck at one mile on turf Aug. 14 in what was her first start for D'Amato. Off as the 7-5 favorite in the Grade 2 Mabee on Sept. 5, she held sway by a neck under Flavien Prat, who rides on Sunday and is now a perfect three for three with her. A first-out maiden $32,000 claiming winner at one mile on grass Jan. 16, 2019, Raymundos Secret now has five wins from seven starts as she bids for her second consecutive Grade 2 victory.

MAXIM RATE

Most recently second, beaten 1 ¼ lengths in the Grade 1 Rodeo Drive at a mile and one quarter on turf Sept. 26 with Luis Saez, she'll be reunited with Rispoli on Sunday as she seeks her second graded stakes victory. With an overall mark of 12-4-3-0, she has earnings of $282,185.

Prat Takes Over On Warren’s Showtime For Autumn Miss Stakes

A four-time stakes winner in search of her first graded victory, California-bred Warren's Showtime heads a field of seven sophomore fillies going one mile on turf in Saturday's Grade 3, $100,000 Autumn Miss Stakes at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif.

Owned by Ben and Sally Warren and bred by Ben Warren, Warren's Showtime is trained by Craig Lewis and is by red-hot sire Clubhouse Ride, out of the Warrens' G1-winning Warren's Veneda.  Most recently a close third in the G1 Del Mar Oaks, Warren's Showtime is the leading money earner in the field with $460,251.

The Jeff Mullins-trained Croughavouke, a sharp recent one mile turf allowance winner, the Simon Callaghan-trained Mind Out, who fetched $850,000 as a yearling, Leonard Powell's French-bred Guitty, who faced colts in the Del Mar Derby and midwestern invader Nasty, who will be making her first start for Richard Baltas, all would appear to have legitimate chances.

WARREN'S SHOWTIME
Owner:  Ben & Sally Warren
Trainer:  Craig Lewis
Most recently third, beaten 1 1/2 lengths going a mile and one eighth on turf in the G1 Del Mar Oaks Aug. 22, she has been a gem of consistency for her connections, winning three times from seven starts this year while third on three occasions and banking $333,980.  In the Oaks at Del Mar, she appeared to have the race in hand under Mike Smith as she made the lead and opened up by one length a furlong out but may have lost her focus late.  Ridden in her 11 previous tries by Jorge Velez, she'll get the first-time services of Flavien Prat and will get back to what may be a preferred distance, as she's four for seven at a mile on turf.  With three wins from four tries over the Santa Anita grass, she's 12-5-0-5 overall.

CROUGHAVOUKE
Owner:  Red Baron's Barn & Rancho Temescal, LLC
Trainer:  Jeff Mullins
Highly regarded by Mullins since her arrival from her native Ireland late last year, she's placed in a total of four turf stakes in nine Southern California starts, including a close third in the G3, mile and one eighth Honeymoon three starts back on May 30.  Closer to the pace in her one mile turf allowance score on Aug. 29 at Del Mar, she rolled to an impressive three quarter length win as the 2-1 favorite under Umberto Rispoli, who rides back in the Autumn Miss. With an overall mark of 11-2-3-2, Croughavouke seeks her first graded stakes victory on Saturday.

MIND OUT
Owner:  Gainesway Stable, LNJ Foxwoods & Andrew Rosen
Trainer:  Simon Callaghan
Most recently fourth, beaten three lengths by loose on the lead winner BulletproofOne in the 5 1/2-furlong turf Unzip Me Stakes, this chestnut daughter of Tapit is better suited at one mile on turf and figures to run a huge race on Saturday.  A close third to Warren's Showtime in her second career start, the one mile turf Surfer Girl Stakes five starts back on Oct. 6, 2019, Mind Out has the class and running style to spring a mild upset.  She'll be ridden for the first time by Drayden Van Dyke.

GUITTY
Owner:  Benowitz Family Trust, Madaket Stables, LLC, M. Mathiesen & M. Powell
Trainer:  Leonard Powell
A deep closer at any distance, she was far back early going a mile and one eighth on turf in the G2 Del Mar Derby Sept. 6 and finished well to be beaten 5 1/4 lengths.  An even seventh two back in the G1 Del Mar Oaks at the same distance Aug. 22, she flew late to be second, beaten three quarter of a length in the G2 San Clemente at one mile on turf July 25.  With two wins, both at a mile on turf, from 10 overall starts, Guitty will hope to be rolling from off the pace with top jock Juan Hernandez engaged.

NASTY
Owner:  LNJ Foxwoods
Trainer:  Richard Baltas
Most recently well beaten as the 7-2 favorite in an ungraded one mile turf stakes running over a yielding course at Indiana Grand Aug. 12, this Kentucky-bred filly by Street Sense had pressed the pace in two previous 1 1/16-mile turf races at Indiana, breaking her maiden by eight lengths on June 18 and taking a second condition allowance by one length on July 13 while favored on both occasions.  Previously trained by Brad Cox, she has two wins from five starts and will debut for Baltas while ridden for the first time by Ricky Gonzalez.  Out of the Lion Heart mare Valiant Passion, Nasty was purchased for $230,000 as a Keeneland September Yearling.

Surfer Girl Stakes Win Puts Madone On Track For Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf

Next to last, about five lengths off the lead with a half mile to run, Flavien Prat stepped on the gas heading into the far turn aboard heavily favored Madone, who  kicked into gear and despite being fanned six wide turning for home, battled gamely to hold off the late charge of Irish-bred Tetragonal to win Sunday's $100,000 Surfer Girl Stakes at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif., by a neck.  Owned by Kaleem Shah and trained by Simon Callaghan, Madone got one mile turf in 1:34.93 and extended her unbeaten streak to three.

“They went fast, which we thought could happen, so Flavien just let her settle back early and let her get comfortable,” said Callaghan.  “He made a big move with her and thankfully she had enough to hold off (Tetragonal)…She is professional, she has really grown up a lot.  She took a little bit of time to come around, but she's really developing into a real professional.  The Breeders' Cup (Juvenile Fillies Turf Nov. 6 at Keeneland) is the plan now.”

A first out one mile maiden turf winner July 31, Madone's most recent score came in the one mile Juvenile Fillies Turf at Del Mar on Sept. 6.  Off at even money in a field of nine 2-year-old fillies today, she paid $4.20, $2.80 and $2.40.

“I liked where we were after the first quarter, it seemed like they were going fast enough up front,” said Autumn Meet leading rider Prat, who made the lead a furlong out and notched his third win of the day.  “The fractions don't say it, but down the backside, it seemed like they slowed it down a little, so I moved and I think I moved a little too soon.  When she makes the lead, she pulls herself up a little.  In all of her races, she doesn't win by much, but she's got a lot of talent.”

A $125,000 Ocala Breeders March 2-year-old in Training Sale purchase, Madone, which means beautiful woman in Italian, picked up $60,000 for her efforts.  By the Medaglia d'Oro stallion Vancouver, she's out of the Cherokee Run mare Indian Love Call.  A perfect three for three, she has earnings of $141,300.

Trained by Richard Baltas, Tetragonal saved ground while last early, wheeled four-deep turning for home and just missed in a thriller.  Off at 25-1 with Juan Hernandez, she finished 3 ½ lengths in front of Pizzazz and paid $11.20 and $6.40.

Ridden by Victor Espinoza, Pizzazz stalked the pace while fourth early and just held off Closing Remarks by a nose for third money.  Off at 8-1, Pizzazz paid $4.40 to show.

Fractions on the race were 22.30, 45.91, 1:10.61 and 1:23.06.
