Havana Grey’s Craven Breeze Up Star Vandeek Takes The Richmond

Impressing with his debut success over six furlongs at Nottingham last month, KHK Racing Ltd's Vandeek (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}–Mosa Mine {GB}, by Exceed And Excel {Aus}) stamped his class on Thursday's G2 Markel Richmond S. at Goodwood. As the 625,000gns joint-topper at the Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up, the Simon and Ed Crisford-trained relative of Anabaa and Key Of Luck travelled ominously well following the pace before taking command with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining. Soon clear under Andrea Atzeni, the 11-8 favourite had a length to spare over Ballymount Boy (Ire) (Camacho {GB}) at the line as he in turn pulled five lengths clear of the G2 July S. third Toca Madera (Ire) (Bated Breath {GB}).

This renewal lost some lustre after the withdrawals of the G2 July S. winner Jasour (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}) and the G2 Railway S. runner-up and TDN Rising Star Unquestionable (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}), but in Vandeek it was showcasing a genuine talent for the operation that had enjoyed success at this level last season with another juvenile sensation Sakheer (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}). Vandeek had blown the start at Nottingham, but showed an abundance of class to easily overcome that disadvantage and he was nobody's secret here.

“He looked pretty special when he won first time out at Nottingham,” Atzeni said. “He's got a bit of a pedigree, he's obviously improved since Nottingham and he showed today how good he is.” Simon Crisford added, “Nothing really took him into the race for as long as we would like today, he was in front too soon and he sorted of idled. I think there's tons of improvement to come and I think we'll head for the Prix Morny on Aug. 19. Obviously that is dependent on Sheikh Khalid's wishes, but he likes to be bold and brave and I'm sure he will want to go for the Group 1. Stamina-wise, he's of out an Exceed And Excel mare, there's tons of speed in his pedigree but he strikes us at home like he will go further. He's big, scopey, he stands over a lot of daylight–he will stay.”

Ballymount Boy's trainer Adrian Keatley said, “He didn't help himself early on–he was a bit slow away and slow to get into his stride, but he's a fair horse and we were expecting that kind of run from him. We'll see where we go with him next, but we might contemplate going seven furlongs.”

Pedigree Notes

Vandeek's third dam Bamieres (Fr) (Riverman) was responsible for Balbonella (Fr) (Gay Mecene), who captured the Prix Robert Papin when it carried Group 1 status before producing a trio of high-class individuals. They were the aforementioned Anabaa who was successful in the G1 July Cup S. and G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest, Key Of Luck who also became an notable sire having finished runner-up in the GI Pimlico Special and Always Loyal (Zilzal), heroine of the G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches.

Always Loyal is the second dam of the Hanshin Juvenile Fillies-winning champion Shonan Adela (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), while another of Balbonella's progeny was the G3 Prix de la Grotte-placed Country Belle (Seattle Slew) who was the dam of the G2 Gimcrack S.-winning sire Country Reel (Danzig). Also connected to the G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches runner-up Baine (Fr) by Country Reel, Mosa Mine's colt foal is by Starspangledbanner (Aus).

Algiers Primed For Dubai World Cup Bid, Will Avoid Saudi Cup Trip

Algiers (Ire) (Shamardal), the winner of the first two rounds of the G2 Al Maktoum Challenge R1/R2 this season, will be aimed at the $12-million G1 Dubai World Cup at the end of March and bypass a shot at the $20-million G1 Saudi Cup on Feb. 25.

“He won Round 2 very well and the step up in trip on the dirt was no problem, so it's all systems go for the World Cup,” said trainer Ed Crisford, who trains with his father, Simon.

“We took him out of the Saudi Cup as we just felt we'd be better off staying in Dubai and aiming at the big one on World Cup night.

“Round 3 of the Al Maktoum Challenge is on Super Saturday [on Mar. 4], but I'd say we'll swerve that and go straight to the World Cup. He's had two quite good runs in quick succession, so we can freshen him up and ready him for the big night.”

The gelding ran out a 6 1/2-length winner of the Al Maktoum Challenge Round 1 on Jan. 6, the first day of the Dubai World Cup Carnival, and he was six lengths clear of Bendoog (Gun Runner) in the Al Maktoum Challenge Round 2 on Feb. 3.

He added of the 6-year-old, who will be ridden by James Doyle, “I think we'll find a lot out next weekend in Saudi in terms of what horses are coming. The Japanese and the Americans have some seriously good dirt horses and I think it'll all come to light after Saudi.

“The World Cup will be a big step up for our horse, but he's the best horse in the UAE at the moment on the dirt and it's hugely exciting.”

Algiers Just The Fifth Horse To Take First Two Rounds Of Al Maktoum Challenge

Algiers (Ire) (Shamardal) became just the fifth horse in history to win the first two rounds of the G2 Al Maktoum Challenge in the same year.

Stepping up to 1900 metres for this first time in this $350,000 main track event sponsored by Emaar, the chestnut was forced to cover extra ground when leaving from stall eight. Unable to save any real estate on the clubhouse turn, he avoided the kickback generated by pacesetters Secret Victory (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) along the fence and Bendoog (Gun Runner), to that foe's outside. Desert Wisdom (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) was also flashing some early speed in third. Rounding the far turn still three to four wide, Algiers set sail for Bendoog, as Desert Wisdom weakened. He passed all comers without drawing a deep breath, and drew away to win by six lengths as much the best for the training duo of Simon and Ed Crisford and owner Hamdan Sultan Ali Alsabousi.

The margins were 2 1/2 lengths from Bendoog to Remorse (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), who came on for third, 1 3/4 lengths to the good of Secret Victory (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) in fourth.

“It was fantastic, he switched leads at the right time in the race and did what he had to do,” said winning co-trainer Simon Crisford. “Obviously we'll talk to his owner, Hamdan Sultan and make a plan now, but on the back of that effort we'll have to strongly push for the [G1] Dubai World Cup [on Mar. 25].”

“It's the furthest he's run on dirt” said pilot James Doyle. “I didn't want to ride him aggressively, but he jumped so well I could have led. I chose to take him back and then one went up my inside and pushed me wide, so then he over-raced throughout. He did well to achieve what he has without ever being in a rhythm.

“He's the best we have in the UAE and this opens up options now, whether it be here or Saudi.”

A dual listed winner in France back in 2020 and 2021 and placed twice at group level there in the latter year, Algiers took the G3 Jebel Ali Mile a year ago, and was also listed placed at Lingfield in November. He opened his 2023 account with a 6 1/2-length win in the G1 Al Maktoum Challenge Round 1.

Pedigree Notes

The best foal out of three-time group winner Antara (Ger) (Platini {Ger}), who was also second in the G1 Premio Lydia Tesio, G1 Prix Jean Romanet and G1 Nassau S., Algiers is from the same family as German Group 3 winner Andolini (Ger) (Kallisto {Ger}) and G3 Deutsches St. Leger and G3 Silbernes Pferd hero Aff Un Zo (Ger) (Kallisto {Ger}). Antara, who foaled the winning Wild Tiger (GB) (Frankel {GB}) in 2019, produced a foal in 2021, but it later died.
