‘They Just Didn’t Wait’: De Sousa, Horseplayers Frustrated By Starter At Royal Ascot

Jockey Silvestre de Sousa expressed his frustrations with the starter at Royal Ascot to the Racing Post on Thursday, after an incident in Wednesday's final race saw the gates open before he could remove the hood from his mount, Stunning Beauty. De Sousa was forced to immediately pull up the horse, but after a lengthy 30-minute delay, stewards officially ruled Stunning Beauty had been a starter.

“The hood didn't come off so I couldn't race,” de Sousa told the Racing Post. “He could have waited two more seconds for me to get it off, but he wouldn't wait and opened the stalls before I could take the hood off. I was shouting, there was a lot of talking going on in there, and they could have waited for me. They just didn't wait.”

Gamblers were also frustrated, as the stewards' decision meant no refunds or deductions would be given out.

A report from the stewards said: “The stewards only have the power to declare a horse a non-runner if it has been prevented from starting due to a faulty action of the stalls or the horse is riderless at the time the start was effected. As De Sousa was mounted at the time the start was effected and there was no faulty action of the starting stalls, Stunning Beauty was deemed to have started.”

In an article in the South China Morning Post, Hong Kong Jockey Club chief steward Kim Kelly said bettors wagering on the race via the world pool ought to have received a refund, and in fact would have if the race had occurred in Hong Kong.

“The IFHA (International Federation of Horseracing Authorities) have introduced a model rule into the international agreement dealing with non-runners but not everyone has signed up to it,” Kelly said. “I have no doubt at all she would have been declared a non-runner (here). The old saying is that to lose money you've got to be able to win money.”

De Sousa Returns From Three-Month Absence

Former champion jockey Silvestre de Sousa will be back in the saddle on Wednesday when he rides the Richard Hannon-trained Always Fearless (Ire) (Camacho {GB}) for his retained owner King Power Racing in a Lingfield handicap. De Sousa hasn't been seen on raceday for three months-a planned shoulder operation in December was delayed after the Brazilian contracted Covid-19.

“I'm really looking forward to getting back at it–it's been a while,” De Sousa said. “At the time I was supposed to have my operation I caught Covid, and by the time I was better, they then couldn't do it for a few more weeks. Basically I missed my whole winter, so it was frustrating. I was planning to rehab and then go to Hong Kong and Dubai before the season starts here.

“On the other side I've spent a lot more time with my family than I would usually, so that has been nice. It's been different, but good to spend the winter at home for a change. I can build myself back up to full fitness before the season really begins. Last season I was in a bit of pain most days–now I should be back to normal.”

De Sousa said King Power's 4-year-old Art Power (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) is among the horses he is looking forward to this season. The grey won the Palace Of Holyroodhouse H. at Royal Ascot and the G3 Lacken S. last summer before finishing fourth in both the G1 Sprint Cup and G1 British Champions Sprint S.

“When you look at the races he ran last year when he was just a 3-year-old, being beaten just a length on Champions Day, you'd have to think he can improve again,” De Sousa said.

Galileo’s Lone Eagle Best In the Zetland

Stepping out of nursery company having won a competitive affair at Doncaster Sept. 12, Ballylinch Stud and Aquis Farm’s Lone Eagle (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) made most of the running to land Saturday’s 10-furlong G3 Godolphin Flying Start Zetland S. at Newmarket. Ridden from the break by Silvestre de Sousa to race on the front end, the 16-5 shot was joined by Fabilis (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and shared the lead with that rival throughout the early stages. Seeing him off before coping with Recovery Run (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) on the run to the line, the bay registered a 1 3/4-length success as the runner-up pulled seven lengths clear of Mystery Angel (Ire) (Kodi Bear {Ire}). “It was a nice performance, as it is not easy for a two-year-old on that kind of ground,” de Sousa said. “He is really tough, he’s not very big but he gallops his heart out.”

Runner-up to Recovery Run on debut over a mile at Sandown Aug. 7, Lone Eagle was off the mark over that trip at Goodwood next time Aug. 28 prior to his Doncaster success and despite being steadily progressive had not made any dramatic improvement in that period. Blessed with the rail here over a trip extreme for juveniles which obviously holds no fears, the Ballylinch homebred kept finding as his old rival pressed in the closing stages in a performance that said more St Leger than Epsom Derby where 2021 is concerned. Freddie Meade said, “He’s got a progressive profile and we thought he’d be crying out this trip and would relish it. We were happy about the ground, as he went on it at Goodwood and is a horse that doesn’t over-race and needs stoking up. He’s a horse that would suit Epsom and the Derby is a great thing to think about. He showed he can handle a quirky track like Goodwood and ran on quick ground first time and on good at Doncaster, so is versatile.”

Lone Eagle is the first foal out of the staying dam Modernstone (GB) (Duke of Marmalade {Ire}), who was successful in the Fasig-Tipton Ladies Marathon S. and was third in the GIII Dowager S. for the Christophe Clement stable before being purchased for 1million gns by Ballylinch Stud at the 2017 Tattersalls December Mares Sale. She is a granddaughter of the unraced Modena (Roberto), an influential producer for Juddmonte responsible for the high-class pair of Elmaamul (Diesis {GB}) and Reams of Verse (Nureyev), with the latter the winner of the G1 Epsom Oaks, as well as the G2 Yorkshire Cup winner Manifest (GB) (Rainbow Quest). Another of Modena’s progeny Midsummer (GB) (Kingmambo) in turn produced the multiple group and grade I heroine Midday (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), whose son Midterm (GB) by Galileo captured the G3 Sandown Classic Trial and whose half-sister Sun Maiden (GB) by Galileo’s son Frankel (GB) took the G3 Hoppings S. and was placed in the G1 QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares S. Modernstone’s second foal is a yearling colt by Lope de Vega (Ire).

Teofilo’s Gear Up Battles To Acomb Success

With vital course-and-distance experience to call upon, Mark Johnston’s Gear Up (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) proved toughest in a war of attrition to land York’s G3 Tattersalls Acomb S. on Wednesday. Successful over this seven-furlong trip on debut July 25, the 9-1 shot was placed prominently by Silvestre de Sousa from the outset and battled gamely to overhaul Spycatcher (Ire) (Vadamos {Fr}) close home. At the line, there was half a length between them, with the long-time leader Broxi (Ire) (Kodi Bear {Ire}) three lengths away in third having forced a pace which found many out. “He was a different horse from his debut here,” the winning rider explained. “He jumped off and knew his job. He showed a very willing attitude.”

Getting loose in the preliminaries prior to his debut, Gear Up was ultimately able to win with some authority there and his stamina came to the fore with this demanding pace cracking several of the fancied contenders. “Everyone was thinking of him as quite a difficult horse after his debut, where he was off the bridle early before flying home,” Johnston said. “He was very different in the prelims today–laid-back and relaxed and Silvestre said he learned more today than first time. He’s not the most impressive horse at home, but we’ve seen his style again today, he looked the first under pressure then found more and more. He wants a mile now and he’s bred to get a mile,” his trainer added. “We weren’t thinking he’d be ready this early, despite it being August now. He’ll have one or two more runs maximum and my first thought was the [G2] Royal Lodge.”

Karl Burke said of the maiden Spycatcher, “I thought we had it at the furlong pole when he went a length or so clear. He’s a nice colt, but there’s improvement in him. He didn’t really have a race first time when it all went wrong and he fell out of the stalls. He’ll learn a lot from today and he’s having a good, healthy blow. He travelled great and the winner is just typical of one of Mark’s–they don’t stop. I’m not sure where we’ll go now. We’ll just get him back home and see how he comes out of it.”

Out of Gearanai (Toccet), a half-sister to the G3 Manuel J Guiraldes winner Plainswoman (Arg) (Zensational), the Jim Bolger-bred Gear Up is therefore a full-brother to the G3 Eyrefield S. scorer Guaranteed (Ire). Plainswoman’s half-sister Sanaara (Anabaa) is the dam of another useful Bolger runner by Teofilo in Theobald (Ire), who was runner-up in the G3 Anglesey S. and G3 Tyros S., while the third dam is the GI Spinster S., GI Kentucky Oaks, GI Beldame S. and GI Gazelle H. heroine Dispute (Danzig). Also connected to Agitare (Ire), another Teofilo who was third in the G2 Golden Fleece S., and the G3 Round Tower S. and G3 Leopardstown 1000 Guineas Trial winner Maoineach (Congaree), Gearanai’s yearling is a full-brother to the winner.
