Champion South African Sire Silvano Dies

Silvano (Ger) (Lomitas {GB}-Spirit of Eagles, by Beau's Eagle), a multiple champion sire in South Africa, has died aged 25 at Maine Chance Farms, the stud reported via Twitter. Silvano had been pensioned since last October.

A second-generation stallion bred by the Jacobs family's Gestut Fahrhof, Silvano won the G2 Oppenheim-Colonia-Union-

Rennen for trainer Andreas Wohler at four and added the G2 Grosser Preis der Wirtschaft at five. He headed off on a global campaign thereafter, finishing fifth in the G1 Hong Kong Vase that season before taking the Singapore Cup the following March at six. He was third in the G1 Dubai Sheema Classic before returning to Hong Kong to take the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup. He ventured to the U.S. later that year to take the GI Arlington Million and finish second in the GI Man O' War S.

Silvano began his stud career at Gestut Fahrhof in 2002, the same year that Andreas Jacobs purchased Maine Chance Farms in South Africa. Silvano's journey South to Maine Chance during the second half of 2003 was meant to be a shuttle trip, but an outbreak of African Horse Sickness during his trip made travel plans much more complicated. Aside from a brief sojourn back to Germany in 2009, Silvano stayed in South Africa for good.

Silvano has thus far sired 25 Group 1 winners, headed in earnings by the current champion and five-time Group 1 winner Hawwaam (SAf). Others of note include the globetrotting Vercingetorix (SAf), G1 Durban July winners Marinaresco (SAf), Heavy Metal (SAf), Bold Silvano (SAf) and Power King (SAf) and G1 Deutsches Derby winner Lucky Speed (Ger), a product of Silvano's 2009 German crop.

Hawwaam To Stand At Wilgerbosdrift

South African champion Hawwaam (SAf) (Silvano {Ger}-Halfway To Heaven {SAf}, by Jet Master {SAf}), the winner of five Group 1s in the colours of the late Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, will enter stud in 2021 at Wilgerbosdrift Stud, which co-bred him with Mauritzfontein Stud and sold him for R1,000,000 at the Bloodstock South Africa National Yearling Sale in 2017.

South Africa's champion 3-year-old of 2018-19, Hawwaam won the G1 Premier's Champions Challenge twice, and also collected the G1 Horse Chestnut S., G1 Daily News 2000 and G1 S A Classic for trainer Mike de Kock. Silvano Colt Leads National 2YO Sale Opener

A colt by recently pensioned South African champion sire Silvano (Ger) took top billing during the first of two sessions of the Bloodstock South Africa National 2-Year-Old Sale on Thursday. Offered by Wilgerbosdrift Stud as lot 100, the fourth foal out of the dual Group 1 winner Europa Point (Ire) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}) was bought by Form Bloodstock for R1.1 million ($70,494/£53,710/€59,723) and was the only seven-figure transaction of the day. The colt’s third dam, Sheroog (Shareef Dancer), is a full-sister to Colorado Dancer (Ire), the dam of Dubai Millennium, and thus it is also the family of leading South African sire Fort Wood.

Silvano also supplied the session’s top-priced filly, lot 54, who was bought by John Freeman for R360,000 ($23,070/£17,581/€19,545). The Ridgemont Highlands-consigned filly is the fourth foal out of the Group 1-placed Careful Hiker (SAf) (Spectrum {Ire}), herself a daughter of the South African champion broodmare Our Table Mountain (Fusaichi Pegasus), a half-sister to American turf champion Artie Schiller.

On the first day of trade, 162 of the 184 2-year-olds offered were sold for an aggregate of R18,680,000 ($1,196,113/£911,770/€1,014,215). The average and median both ticked up 11.7% at R115,309 ($7,383/£5,628/€6,255) and R67,500 ($4,322/£3,294/€3,661), respectively.
