Timberlake Confirmed for Arkansas Derby

WinStar Farm and Siena Farm's Timberlake (Into Mischief), winner of the Feb. 24 GII Rebel S., will return to Oaklawn Park for the Mar. 30 GI Arkansas Derby, trainer Brad Cox confirmed Wednesday.

“I like the timing,” Cox said. “Obviously, he has the experience there now, that one run under him. I kind of thought the Rebel was the spot when we were getting started. At the beginning of the winter, we thought the Rebel was the spot. It worked out.”

Timberlake worked five furlongs in 1:02.00 (18/30) at Cox's Fair Grounds base last Friday. The colt won last year's GI Champagne S. and second in the GI Hopeful S. The Rebel was his first start since finishing fourth in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile.

Cox has won the last two renewals of the Arkansas Derby, with Cyberknife (Gun Runner) in 2022 and Angel of Empire (Pioneerof the Nile) in 2023. He could become the first trainer to win the race in three straight years.

Other horses pointing to the Arkansas Derby include Mystik Dan (Goldencents), Liberal Arts (Arrogate), Just Steel (Justify) and Time for Truth (Omaha Beach).

Speak Easy Confirmed for Fountain of Youth

Siena Farm and WinStar Farm's Speak Easy (Constitution), who had been cross-entered in an optional-claimer Friday, will take his place in the line-up for Saturday's GII Coolmore Fountain of Youth S. at Gulfstream Park. The sophomore debuted with an impressive victory going seven furlongs at the Hallandale oval Jan. 27. He drew the rail and will be facing eight other 3-year-olds in the 1 1/16-miles Fountain of Youth.

“We like the post and the way he's been training,” trainer Todd Pletcher said Thursday.

Irad Ortiz Jr., who was slated to ride Speak Easy Friday, will have the return mount in the Fountain of Youth.

Speak Easy had been installed as the 3-5 morning-line favorite in a field of seven 3-year-olds entered in Friday's seventh race, a 1 1/8-mile optional-claiming allowance. Courtlandt Farms' Conquest Warrior (City of Light) is expected to be favored in his absence. Trained by Shug McGaughey, Conquest Warrior was tabbed a 'TDN Rising Star' following a gutsy victory in a Jan. 13 maiden special weight race.

Constitution’s Speak Easy A Good-Looking Debut Winner at Gulfstream

SPEAK EASY (c, 3, Constitution–Fun {GISP, $128,729}, by Harlan's Holiday), an easy-in-the-market 83-10 from a 4-1 morning line, outfought the heavily favored fellow firster Victory Avenue (Arrogate) to open his account at first asking before the clock struck noon on Pegasus Day Saturday at Gulfstream Park. The chalk, a $375,000 OBS June purchase who was bet down to 3-2 from a 5-1 morning line in the same maiden won last year by Mage (Good Magic) for the same connections, showed good early foot and led what appeared to be a well-bred group onto the track proper, but Irad Ortiz, Jr. asked Speak Easy for some speed and took the sit just off that one's flank down the backstretch. Matching motors through an opening quarter in :22.64 and a half in :44.61, the duo hit the quarter pole more or less on even terms, but it was clear that Speak Easy was going the better of the two into the stretch. Victory Avenue did not go down without a fight, but Speak Easy proved easily best in the finish, scoring by 1 3/4 lengths. The Frankie Dettori-ridden Big City (City of Light) finished a 3 3/4 lengths behind the top pair, while $925,000 KEESEP yearling Corporate Power (Curlin) got home well for fourth and galloped out past his rivals around the turn. “This colt had been training very well,” said winning trainer Todd Pletcher. “Like always, a little concerned when you draw the one-hole going seven-eighths, but he was able to work out a really good trip. He broke alertly and was able to move outside the favorite. Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance Thanks Supporters Of The Holiday Giving Campaign

From Nov. 28 through Dec. 31, Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance collected over $200,000 in donations from its 2023 Holiday Giving Campaign to raise funds to support thousands of Thoroughbreds at 86 TAA-accredited organizations, the non-profit said in a release Wednesday.
