Out of 2016 GI Del Mar Oaks heroine Harmonize (Scat Daddy), who was campaigned and bred by Larkin Armstrong, this 3-year-old colt hails from a deep, extended female family which includes MGSWs like Al Khali (Medaglia d'Oro), Cappuchino (Capote) and Hungry Island (More Than Ready), plus GI Diana S. heroine and MGSW Somali Lemonade (Lemon Drop Kid) and MGISW Verrazano (More Than Ready). Heading to Upstate New York, a trio of 2-year-old colts who will be kicking off their juvenile careers. From the inside, Eliminate (Curlin) is a $525,000 Ylg KEESEP chestnut owned by Spendthrift Farm and Repole Stable out of GSW I'm A Looker (Henny Hughes) whose second dam's half-sister produced MGISW Dortmund (Big Brown). Deeper still on the female side, the Todd Pletcher trainee's fourth dam, champion 2-year-old filly Lakeville Miss (Rainy Lake) is responsible for GISW and GSW Mogambo (Mr. Prospector). The yearling Quality Road sold out of I'm a Looker topped the opening session of the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale on Amo Racing's bid of $1.1 million.

Just to his outside is another son of Curlin–Chaperone–who fetched $950,000 at last year's Saratoga sale. Owned by Gus King and trained by Ron Moquett, the chestnut is out of GI Cotillion S. heroine and GI Alabama S. runner-up It Tiz Well (Arch), whose own dam is a half-sister to Canadian champion grass mare Solid Appeal (Successful Appeal).

“He reminded me of all the good things about the Curlins that you would like to see,” said trainer Ron Moquett. “He's a good-sized horse and had a certain sense of class about him. We thought there was a possibility that he would get well over a million and it worked out in our favor. You'd always rather have a horse with expectations and, as a trainer, it's your job to manage the expectations until you get him where he needs to be.”

Breaking from gate five, Deterministic (Liam's Map) is a $625,0000 Ylg KEESEP buy for trainer Christophe Clement. The dark bay's second dam is a half-sister to a pair of successful group winners in Japan, namely Asakusa Genki (Stormy Atlantic) and Rabbit Run (Tapit), and also to MGSW Rainha Da Bateria (Broken Vow). This colt's well-regarded family under the fourth dam Aquilegia (Alydar) also includes her full-sister and champion 2-year-old filly Althea and her unraced daughter's offspring, GI Breeders' Cup Classic hero Bayern (Offlee Wild). The other half of this uncoupled entry is WinStar Farm homebred Pastor T. Saratoga’s Hall Of Fame S. Rescheduled Friday

After a deluge of rainfall this past week in the Saratoga Springs area, last Friday's $500,000 GII National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame S. for 3-year-old colts at a mile over the grass was postponed seven days, as an interesting mix of American and European invaders reconvene on the Inner Turf.

With conditions which could be soft to yielding, trainer Chad Brown saddles three entries with GISP Appraise (Ire) Kodiac {GB}), Mischievous Angel (Into Mischief) and Carl Spackler (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), while also present is the winner of GIII Manila S. July 7 in Elmont, More Than Looks (More Than Ready) from the stable of Cherie DeVaux, who was installed as the 5-2 morning-line favorite and cross-entered in the GII Secretariat S. at Colonial Downs on Saturday.

General Jim (Into Mischief) gets back to the turf, something he hasn't tried since he was a juvenile. The Shug McGaughey trainee won the GII Pat Day Mile at Churchill Downs on the Derby undercard and then was a well-beaten sixth to Arabian Lion (Justify) in the GI Woody Stephens on Belmont S. Day.

As for the European contingent, who customarily relish a saturated course, Ocean Vision (Ire) (U S Navy Flag) ships over. The bay colt competed in Ireland, France and Qatar and is trained by Godolphin Flying Start program grad Tim Donworth and was last seen running fifth June 11 in the G3 Prix Paul de Moussac at ParisLongchamp. He will be joined by Mysterious Night (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) for Charlie Appleby, who will look to harness some of that late speed that he flashed the last time he was in North America when he won the GI Summer S. at Woodbine over Appraise as a juvenile.

Street Sense’s Never Explain Proves Hungriest In Dinner Party

Hoping that the GIII Dinner Party S. might be a sampling of things to come later on the Preakness Day card, Never Explain came from off the pace to collect his first black-type victory for trainer Shug McGaughey. Handily away from gate 6, the dark bay settled back off the pace in fourth as GI Pegasus World Cup Turf winner Atone (Into Mischief), sent off at 5-2, strode to the front with MGSW Emmanuael and Rising Empire (Empire Maker) in hot pursuit rounding the first turn. With the top running order relatively unchanged following a half in :47.40, Never Explain continued to bide his time along the inside while working his way up to third as the leading two continued to exchange blows turning for home. Taking the final turn a bit wide, Never Explain nonetheless appeared to have the most momentum late, bearing down on the game but tiring leaders. With a gaggle of horses giving it their all late, including favored Hurricane Dream (Fr) who finally got going after lingering near the back early, it was the Courtlandt Farm runner with Flavien Prat that timed it best, winning by 1/2 length over the French bred. Emmanuel rounded out the trifecta.

“It looked like the pace was honest, and I tucked myself in,” said Prat. “I tipped him out turning for home and he really dug in and was game. On the form, it felt like anybody could win. Turning for home, I thought I had a chance. But I felt I wasn't the only one. It seemed like the horse coming outside of me helped me and pushed my horse. It was great. He was really great.”

The victory represented the fifth win for McGaughey in the Dinner Party. He previously won with Lure (1993), Parading (2009), Ironicus (2015) and Fire Away (2018).

Having recorded his sole 2022 victory at Pimlico exactly one year ago, Never Explain didn't show much when sixth going a mile at Gulfstream Jan. 1 but seemed to enjoy the change of venue when winning next time in a nine-panel Tampa allowance Jan. 18. Despite a tardy start in his latest while cutting back a furlong in Oldsmar Mar. 1, the 5-year-old came back to make it two straight under Sammy Camacho.

The win represented the third straight win for Never Explain after removing the blinkers.

“Even without the blinkers he wants to pull a little bit,” said McGaughey. “That was one of the good things about today. [Flavien] got him to relax really well, where he had horse at the finish.”

Pedigree Notes:
With the victory Never Explain becomes the 40th graded winner for Darley American sire Street Sense. A $87,000 KEENOV purchase by Hidden Brook Farm in 2014, the 13-year-old mare Black Oak produced Never Explain in a foal-sharing arrangement between Hidden Brook Farm and Godolphin. A $155,000 KEENOV weanling in 2018, he flourished into a $475,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase by Courtlandt Farm.

Black Oak has an unraced juvenile filly by Palace Malice and a yearling colt McKinzie. This is the family Grade I sprinter Richter Scale.
