Showcasing’s Swingalong Surprises In The Lowther

That Karl Burke collected in Thursday's G2 Sky Bet Lowther S. at York was a surprise to nobody, but the fact that it was with the 25-1 stable second-string Swingalong (Ire) (Showcasing {GB}) as Dramatised (Ire) (Showcasing {GB}) finished out of the frame certainly was. On the pace from the outset racing up the centre under Clifford Lee, Sheikh Juma Dalmook Al Maktoum's 120,000gns Book 2 graduate who had scored by six lengths on her third start over this six-furlong trip at Ripon at the start of the month was marginally behind her G2 Queen Mary S.-winning stablemate overall. Just before the furlong pole, that even-money favourite was starting to feel the pinch about to enter unknown territory but Swingalong was coming on strong and found the line a neck in front of the Kevin Ryan-trained Queen Me (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}). Remarkably, the runner-up was just failing to become the fourth generation winner of this prize for Jaber Abdullah after her dam Queen Kindly (GB) (Frankel {GB}), second dam Lady Of The Desert (Rahy) and third dam Queen's Logic (Ire) (Grand Lodge). There was a further 2 1/2 lengths back to Matilda Picotte (Ire) (Sioux Nation) as Dramatised ended up fifth. “She was green on her first couple of runs and has improved a lot since Ripon,” the winning jockey said. “I kept it simple and all she did was gallop to the line–it wouldn't surprise me if she gets seven next year.”

 

Introduced over five furlongs at Nottingham at the beginning of June, Swingalong was five-lengths second to the subsequently disappointing All The Time (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) before moving up to this distance after a six-week break for a Newbury maiden July 15. Shaping like a stayer there, the chestnut was flat-footed before keeping on into fourth behind the subsequent G3 Molecomb S. winner Trillium (GB) (No Nay Never) but next time at Ripon she cut a dramatically different figure showing speed from the get-go and romping to a confidence-boosting success. Had it not been for the significant shadow cast by Dramatised, the evidence of that performance allied to the fact that she represented the Burke stable replete with classy 2-year-olds would have seen her sent off significantly shorter than her insulting starting price and there was no fluke about this powerful display in a time two seconds faster than the unbeaten colt Streets Of Gold (Ire) (Havana Gold {Ire}) managed over the same trip in the closing nursery on Wednesday.

“She's got a huge stride and has only just filled into her frame,” Burke said of the winner. “She's got a lot stronger over the last six weeks. I know it was a different class of race, but she had them all beat after two furlongs at Ripon and I knew then we were on the right track so I said straight away we'd come here. At the time I didn't think she'd be good enough to beat Dramatised, but the difference was one stayed and one didn't. The Cheveley Park looks the obvious next step, but I'll talk to connections. I think she will stay an extra furlong, but she's got a lot of natural speed so I think we'll use that and not step her up just yet. All dreams are still alive at the minute.”

Of Dramatised, he added, “To be fair to Danny [Tudhope], all along he had his doubts. He rode her work over six furlongs two weeks ago, but I wouldn't have it that she wouldn't stay. Danny was right and I was wrong. She'll revert back to five furlongs now. I was never that keen on the Nunthorpe for her, but I suppose the only saving grace is that we didn't find out she didn't stay in France in the Prix Morny. Luckily, I made an entry in the Abbaye this week with Danny putting that element of doubt in my mind and she could go there and then to the Breeders' Cup.”

Kevin Ryan said of Queen Me, “It was a great run and lack of experience midway through the race probably just cost her. She'd only had the one start and did it very easy first time. Unfortunately we haven't been able to get another run into her, which we would have liked, through no other reason than the ground being so firm. We wanted to mind her and run her on nice ground so we waited to come here. We've always liked the filly and she'll progress again from that. We'll go home and sit on the fence, but she's proved now she's up to this level and galloped all the way through the line, which is always a good sign.”

Swingalong's dam Pilates (Ire) (Shamardal), who won over a mile, is fittingly a half to the useful filly Knavesmire (Ire) (One Cool Cat) who took the Hilary Needler Trophy when it held listed status. The family includes the Listed Abernant S. winner Splice (GB) (Sharpo {GB}), who produced a past Lowther S. winner in Soar (GB) (Danzero {Aus}) who also captured the G3 Princess Margaret S. before producing the G2 July S. runner-up Konchek (GB) (Lethal Force {Ire}). Splice is also responsible for the smart dual listed scorer Feet So Fast (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) who is the second dam of the group 3-winning Scandinavian champion Entangle (GB) also by Pivotal. Pilates's son of Profitable (Ire) sells at the upcoming Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale, while she also has a 2022 colt by New Bay (GB).

Showcasing’s Sense of Duty Outclasses Chipchase Rivals

St Albans Bloodstock's Sense of Duty (GB) (Showcasing {GB}), successful in the second of two juvenile starts, opened this term with an Apr. 28 Redcar conditions score and went postward for Saturday's G3 Pertemps Network Chipchase S. at Newcastle coming back from a neck defeat of G1 Commonwealth Cup third Flotus (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) in Haydock's May 20 Listed Cecil Frail S. last time. Settled off the tempo until coaxed closer after halfway, the 15-8 favourite quickened smartly to seize control approaching the final furlong and powered clear of toiling rivals in the closing stages to easily outclass Annaf (Ire) (Muhaarar {GB}) by 4 1/2 lengths.

“She's a filly I've always been a big fan of, as has everyone, and that was really impressive,” said winning rider Tom Marquand. “She's really getting the hang of it now, she's becoming more professional and she's a hell of a lot stronger too. She's becoming the complete sprinting model as she progresses and God only knows how good she could be. I was really impressed with her at Redcar and she beat Flotus at Haydock, who had Group 1 form and showed it again at [Royal] Ascot. Hopefully this filly can make the step up into that class at some point.”

Sense of Duty is the second of four foals and lone performer out of a multiple-winning full-sister to G3 Fred Darling S. second Sharnberry (GB) (Shamardal), herself the leading representative of Listed St Hugh's S. second Wimple (Kingmambo). She is a half-sister to the unraced to the unraced 2-year-old filly Sanction (GB) (Camelot {GB}) and a yearling colt by Too Darn Hot (GB). The March-foaled dark day's third dam Tunicle (Dixieland Band) is a half-sister to GI Haskell Invitational runner-up and MSW sire Baron de Vaux (Val de l'Orne {Fr}).

Queen Mary Glory For Showcasing’s Dramatised

Making it two-for-two for the TDN Rising Stars in Royal Ascot's juvenile prizes, Clipper Logistics' Dramatised (Ire) (Showcasing {GB}–Katie's Diamond {Fr}, by Turtle Bowl {Ire}) put up an impressive display in a fast time in Wednesday's G2 Queen Mary S. under an in-form Danny Tudhope. Handed the monicker after her dynamic four-length debut win at Newmarket Apr. 29, the filly that Karl Burke regards as the fastest he has had through his hands was backed into 5-2 favouritism and raced near the front line towards the stand's side early. Committed passing two out by Tudhope, who had won the last two races on Tuesday's card, the bay was green and possibly idling in the clear as her rider lost his whip but stayed in command to the line. She had 1 3/4 lengths to spare over Maylandsea (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}) there, with Maria Branwell (Ire) (James Garfield {Ire}) 1 1/4 lengths away in third. “It's job done,” her trainer stated. “She has a lot of natural speed. She lengthens and she keeps going. She's a diva, but was very good today and is definitely a group 1 filly.”

Dramatised, who beat the dual subsequent winner Malrescia (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) hollow on her racecourse bow at the Guineas meeting, could be asked to carry her considerable speed over an extra furlong now according to Burke. “We'll certainly consider the [G1] Prix Morny,” he said. “There's still more to come from her. I think she was just green at Newmarket, where she was jamming on the brakes and still clocked a fast time. I think she will stay six. We trained her dam and she was good enough to be a Guineas filly. We could be looking at the Cheveley Park at the end of the year, but I'm not sure she'd be a Guineas filly, that might be a stretch.”

Clipper Logistics' Steve Parkin added, “We started in racing 20 years ago and, through a guy called Joe Foley, I started a breeding operation and this is our first big winner in terms of something we have bred. She has come from the farm and it is a huge thrill. We saw her as a baby, watched her develop on the farm and to watch her come through like that is very special and very emotional. This is a five-to-ten-year plan, and to come here and have a homebred winner so early in the stud's life is a massive thrill. It is the biggest thrill in my life, apart from having my children.”

Foley, who acts as Parkin's bloodstock advisor, added, “Karl told me last night it was only a matter of how far today! Trainers usually get scared coming into a run, but I had to tell him to stop talking. Her dam Katie's Diamond ran away going to the start in the Boussac, she ran away in the race, and was still in front 50 yards from the line. She was a highly-talented mare, but a bit crazy. She is a beautiful-looking mare. She has a belting yearling filly by Night of Thunder, a beautiful colt foal by Pinatubo, he is gorgeous, and she is in-foal to Showcasing.”

Michael Bell said of Maylandsea, who was further advertising the prowess of first-season sire sensation Havana Grey, “That was an excellent run. She's a filly with a big future, hopefully. I think the winner is very highly-regarded and beat us fair and square today, but this is a very nice filly going forward.” Jockey Kieran Shoemark said of Maria Branwell, “She travelled nicely, but actually when I let her down, the ground was quick enough for her really. She'll get six furlongs and is an exciting filly for the rest of the year.”

The aforementioned Katie's Diamond captured the Listed Empress S. and was third in the G3 Prix du Calvados and, as Joe Foley recounted, finished fifth in the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac on her penultimate start. A half to the dam of the GIII Jimmy Durante S.third Quattroelle (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}), she hails from the family of the G3 Prix Miesque winner Aquatinta (Ger) (Samum {Ger}).

Kingman Colts Catch The Eye On Saturday

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Saturday's Observations features a pair of Kingman (GB) colts at Naas.

 

2.50 Naas, Cond, €22,000, 2yo, 5f 205yT
AGE OF KINGS (IRE) (Kingman {GB}) is the first foal out of the G2 May Hill S. winner Turret Rocks (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) who debuts for Westerberg and Coolmore and Ballydoyle in the race won three years ago by Siskin (First Defence). A 1.1million gns purchase at the Book 1 Sale, the February-foaled bay encounters Flaxman Stables Ireland's Yosemite Valley (GB) (Shamardal), a half-brother to the fellow Donnacha O'Brien-trained G3 Ballysax S. winner Piz Badile (Ire) (Ulysses {Ire}). They will have to be sharp to deal with The Aga Khan's Curragh third Shartash (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), a Johnny Murtagh-trained son of the dual G2 Blandford S. scorer Shamreen (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}).

A 525,000gns Book 1 graduate, the March-foaled progeny of the Listed Boadicea S. winner Eartha Kitt (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) is up against Amo Racing Limited's fellow newcomer Walbank (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), the 2022 Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up Sale topper also at 525,000gns who represents the David Loughnane stable of last year's winner.

OPULENT (IRE) (Dubawi {Ire}) is the fourth foal out of the G1 Irish Oaks heroine Bracelet (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) from the incredible family of Galileo (Ire) and Sea the Stars (Ire) which also boasts Montjeu's Wading (Ire) and her close relative Athena (Ire) (Camelot {GB}). Joseph O'Brien saddles Coolmore and Westerberg's newcomer, who will be tested by Juddmonte's Ezine (GB) (Showcasing {GB}), a Dermot Weld-trained half-sister to Sangarius (GB) (Kingman {GB}) who chased home Tuesday (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) on debut in March.
