Ship And Win Success Helps Fuel Fall Meet Purse Increases At Del Mar

Del Mar's eighth fall meeting – starting on Wednesday, Nov. 3 – will offer horsemen/women a solid 20% blended raise in overnight purses compared to last year, as well as a continuation of the exceptionally popular “Ship & Win” program that has amplified field size and year-round horse population at the seaside track near San Diego, Calif., and in the state.

The 15-day stand, which will run through Sunday, Nov. 28, includes the 38th edition of the Breeders' Cup World Championships on Friday, Nov. 5, and Saturday, Nov. 6. The meet is entitled the “Bing Crosby Season” as a salute to the track's founder.

The 20% across-the-board increase in fall overnight purses means that Del Mar is presenting its fall schedule under the same robust levels as its highly successful summer session that ended on Labor Day. And the restarting of its Ship & Win program – with a $3,000 guarantee for a first outing along with a 30% purse boost in all starts – builds on the program's blockbuster summer numbers that were the best in its 11-year history.

“Our summer meet was extraordinary on all fronts,” said track vice president and racing secretary David Jerkens. “Our racing was just about the best we've ever seen here and our Ship & Win program continues to give Del Mar – and California racing – a tremendous boost.”

Among the all-inclusive increases in purse values during the upcoming four-week session will be the following:

  • Maiden Special Weight races jump from $57,000 to $70,000.
  • First-level allowance races rise from $59,000 to $72,000.
  • $16,000 claimers will now race for $30,000 instead of $26,000.

Del Mar's 'Ship & Win' strategy saw 180 new horses make 272 starts during its 31-day summer meeting. That upped the totals since the plan's start in 2011 to more than 1,600 runners appearing at Del Mar and making over 2,200 starts. Those same horses made more than 4,500 starts at other state track's during that time, primarily at Santa Anita, Los Alamitos and Golden Gate Fields.

The Ship and Win program will continue its positive arrangement with Del Mar's sister track, Santa Anita, which began on a full-time basis this past summer. Eligible horses from out-of-state who start once at the upcoming Santa Anita fall session still will be eligible for 30% purse bonus. Besides the track's 180 direct 'S & W' summer runners, there also were 43 Santa Anita starters who then came to Del Mar to compete this past summer and took advantage of the 'S & W' arrangement.

The simple rules for Ship and Win runners are as follows:

  • Horses must have made their last start outside of California.
  • Horses cannot have raced in California in the past 12 months.
  • First-time starters are not eligible
  • $3,000 starter fee for all eligible horses; 30% purse bonus for all starts at meet
  • Stakes runners (including overnight stakes) are not eligible for 30% bonus.

Those who have questions concerning the program are encouraged to contact Del Mar's executive vice president for racing Tom Robbins or Jerkens at (858) 792-4230.

“We couldn't be more thrilled with our partners at Del Mar who once again are offering our owners the biggest purses to run for,” said Thoroughbred Owners of California chairman Gary Fenton. “This coupled with its signature 'Ship & Win' program – which has greatly influenced the Southern California horse population – make us excited to head back south again in November.”

Santa Anita to Offer ‘Ship & Win’ in Fall

Santa Anita will continue the “Ship & Win” program this fall at the Autumn Meet, which opens Friday, Oct. 1. The program began this past May at the Arcadia track, is currently a part of Del Mar's summer meet, and will continue through the fall. “Ship & Win” provides a $3,000 bonus and a 35% increase in purse earnings for any horse that has not run in California for one year. In addition, any new out-of-state horses coming to Santa Anita which meet requirements or which have made their first start in the Del Mar “Ship & Win” program remain eligible for the same benefits in their first start at Santa Anita.

“This program has proven to be a primary driver in our efforts to bring horses to California from all over the nation,” said Santa Anita's director of racing and racing secretary, Chris Merz. “We started to see some horses coming here in May and June and Del Mar has done a tremendous job of recruiting, which we are confident is going to be of significant benefit to the entire circuit here.  Along with Del Mar, the Thoroughbred Owners of California [TOC] have been very supportive in the implementation of 'Ship & Win' and it's great to have all of us working together for the benefit of racing in California.”

More information is available through the Santa Anita Racing Office at (626) 574- 6352.

Del Mar Boosts Ship & Win Program To Record Levels For 2021

Del Mar's highly successful Ship & Win program will increase to record levels this year as part of the seaside track's 82nd season which kicks off on Friday, July 16.

Ship & Win will provide horsemen and horsewomen who bring in out-of-state runners to race at Del Mar this summer a $4,000 starter bonus for their initial outing with a further 50% purse supplement for all dirt starters and a 40% purse supplement for all races run on turf. Those are the highest incentives provided since the program began in 2011.

The purse bonuses extend to additional starts at the summer meet and are designed to enhance all purses won by first through fifth finishers. Further, should a Ship & Win horse be claimed out of its first outing and subsequently run back at the meet, the original owner will receive all bonuses.

“The Ship & Win program has been essential to Del Mar's racing program and for racing in California,” said Del Mar's racing secretary David Jerkens. “Our local owners and trainers are our biggest backers of the program, providing over 70% of the runners. Doubling the bonus levels this year has got people really excited. My phone is ringing off the hook.”

Del Mar has been working in conjunction with Santa Anita to attract runners to Southern California and this year the seaside track will extend purse benefits to a horse which makes its initial Ship & Win start in either May or June at Santa Anita. Further, that same horse may make up to two starts during that period and still have its purse benefits extended through the Del Mar summer meet.

The simple rules for Ship & Win runners are as follows:

  • Horses must have made their last start outside of California
  • Horses cannot have raced in California in the past 12 months
  • First-time starters are not eligible
  • $4,000 first-race starter fee to all qualifying horses
  • 50% purse bonus for dirt finishers first through fifth; 40% purse bonus for turf finishers; bonuses stay the same for subsequent
  • starts at the meet
  • If a Ship & Win horse is acquired after its initial S & W start, the original owner earns purse bonuses for subsequent outings through the summer meet
  • Stakes runners (including overnight stakes) are not eligible for the 50% or 40% purse supplement, but will receive the $4,000 starter bonus
  • Those with questions concerning the program are encouraged to contact Jerkens or Del Mar's executive vice president for racing Tom Robbins at (858) 792-4230 or via e-mail: david@dmtc.com or tomr@dmtc.com.

“Del Mar's Ship & Win program benefits owners, and the entire ecosystem,” said Thoroughbred Owners of California chairman Gary Fenton. “Del Mar Ship & Win graduates have accounted for over 100 starts during the first 10 weeks of racing at Santa Anita Park 2021. TOC is very appreciative of Del Mar's continued efforts in providing great opportunities for everyone.”

In February Del Mar announced a major purse increase for the 2021 season. The track expects to average more than $700,000 per day in purses. Del Mar will begin its 31-day summer meet on July 16 and race through Labor Day Monday, September 6.

Major Purse Increases for Del Mar’s Summer Meet

With purses to exceed $700,000 per day and “Ship and Win” incentives to double, the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club is substantially increasing all overnight purses and offering record incentives for its upcoming Summer Meet, which opens Saturday, July 17, and runs through Labor Day, Sept. 6. Among the increases for overnights from last year, maiden special weight races will jump from $55,000 to $70,000, with a number of maiden claiming and open claiming purses also increasing. In addition, purse levels will be raised for several summer stakes races with the stakes schedule to be released in the coming weeks.

Average daily overnight purses for the 2021 season will be increased by over 30% as compared to 2019 levels. Del Mar's total handle for 2020 was above initial projections–despite a unique year due to the COVID-19 pandemic that allowed no spectators on site–which added funding to the purse increases for 2021.

Owners and trainers that ship out-of-state horses to race at Del Mar through the “Ship and Win” program will see significant boosts as well, with the participation fee for owners doubling from $2,000 to $4,000 and a purse bonus from 20% to 40% for all eligible races. The purse bonus will be upped to 50% for dirt races in the “Ship and Win” program. For example, a maiden special weight race on the main track this summer will carry a purse of $105,000 ($70,000 with a 50% bonus), plus a $4,000 starter bonus for out-of-state horses that qualify.

“We've got some real momentum in California as we prepare for the 2021 season and, based on the inquiries we're receiving, owners and trainers are taking notice,” said Del Mar's executive vice president for racing, Tom Robbins. “Our partnership with the Thoroughbred Owners of California [TOC], TVG, and The Stronach Group [TSG] has us on track for one of the most lucrative seasons in Del Mar history, which will be a boost for California racing and help set the stage for us to host the Breeders' Cup here again in November.”

The 2021 purse enhancements are partly due to a partnership with TOC, FanDuel Group's TVG, and TSG's 1/ST Racing. The agreement is expected to inject up to $15 million into California Thoroughbred purses and programs over the next two years.

Del Mar will offer a 31-day summer racing season this year. It will open with Saturday and Sunday cards (July 17-18), then switch to a Thursday through Sunday schedule. Keeping with tradition, the 2021 summer season will close on Labor Day.
