Elarqam, Yafta Retired to Haras de Saint Arnoult

MGSW Elarqam (GB) (Frankel {GB}-Attraction {GB}, by Efisio {GB}), who ran third in the G1 Juddmonte International in 2019 for Sheikh Hamdan’s Shadwell, has been retired and will stand at Haras de Saint Arnoult in partnership with Shadwell next year. The three-time group winner will command €6,000. The partnership to stand the dark bay son of Classic heroine Attraction was brokered by Richard Venn.

“We are extremely excited to be standing Elarqam in France from next season, in partnership with Haras de Saint Arnoult,” said Shadwell Stud Director Richard Lancaster. “He was a prolific racehorse having won or placed in group races at two, three, four, and five years old. In an industry that is centred around genetics, the quality of his pedigree speaks for itself.”

Bred by Floors Farming, the colt was snapped up by Shadwell for 1.6 million gns out of Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale and sent to the yard of Mark Johnston. A winner of his debut at York, he captured the G3 Somerville S. next out. At three, he added a group placing in the G2 York S., and went two better at four, taking the York S. outright, one start prior to his Group 1 placing in the Juddmonte International, as well as two listed stakes wins. Kept in training this term, from four starts he added the G3 Legacy Cup at Newbury in September and was a nose second in the G3 Brigadier Gerard S. earlier in the season. Rated at 120, he retires with a mark of 17-6-1-3 and $462,032 in earnings.

“We are absolutely delighted to be able to get such an exciting stallion,” added Haras de Saint Arnoult’s Larissa Kneip. “He’s got the looks, the pedigree, and he’s proven on the racetrack that he’s not just a “specialist” in a particular restricted field, but a proper racehorse, able to adapt to any distance, any tactics, at any age, and deliver top-class performances with great regularity.”

Elarqam’s dam struck four times at the highest level, including the G1 1000 Guineas and Irish equivalent, and has already thrown the MGSP Cushion (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) and G3 Sapphire S. hero Fountain of Youth (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}).

Elarqam will be joined at stud by GSW and fellow newcomer Yafta (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}-Swiss Dream {GB}, by Oasis Dream {GB}) at €2,500. The former Shadwell runner was purchased from Shadwell through Richard Venn, with breeding rights available.

“Yafta has been bought from Shadwell through agent Richard Venn by an owner of mine who has been wanting to invest in a speed sire for a while now, but it was hard to find the right profile,” said Kneip. “It’s the type of stallion that was missing from our roster here at Haras de Saint Arnoult, and the type of sire that we are in desperate need of here in France.”

A £280,000 yearling from the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale, the Lordship Stud-bred won the G3 Hackwood S. as a sophomore and was also placed another three times a group level for Richard Hannon and Shadwell. The 5-year-old’s record stands at $181,511 with four wins and eight placings from 18 starts. Yafta is out of three-time listed winner Swiss Dream, herself a half-sister to French MGSW Swiss Diva (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), Group 3 winner and sire Swiss Spirit (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and the MGSP Swiss Franc (GB) (Mr. Greeley). The quartet were produced by MSW and G2 Flying Childers S. runner-up Swiss Lake (Indian Ridge {Ire}).

G1SW Mohaather to Stand at Nunnery Stud

Group 1 winner Mohaather (GB) (Showcasing {GB}-Roodeye {GB}, by Inchinor {GB}) will stand at Nunnery Stud in 2021, Shadwell announced on Monday. The 2020 G1 Sussex S. hero was retired earlier this year after sustaining bone bruising in his near hind fetlock joint. A fee for the bay will be announced later.

Richard Lancaster, Shadwell Stud Director, said, “The entire team at Shadwell are delighted to be standing Mohaather at  Nunnery. He put up arguably the best performance of any miler this year when defeating a top-class field in the Sussex S., backing up what was an ultra-impressive performance in the Summer Mile at Ascot. His explosive turn of foot will live long in the memory.”

Bred by Gaie Johnson Houghton, Mohaather was knocked down for 110,000gns to Shadwell at the 2017 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 2. As a juvenile he won two of three starts, culminating in a score in the G3 Horris Hill S. at Newbury. Returning at three, the Marcus Tregoning trainee added another Newbury Group 3, this time the Greenham S. from two starts. In three 2020 appearances the 4-year-old delivered in his final two, taking the July 11 G2 Summer Mile S. and the G1 Sussex S. at Goodwood at the end of the month. The highest-rated son of Showcasing at 123, Mohaather retired in August with a mark of 8-5-1-0 and $371,699 in earnings.

Added Lancaster, “It’s important to remember Mohaather was also a group winner at two and three and he has the physical prowess to match his racecourse exploits. He is particularly attractive–a beautiful dark bay–and is an extraordinarily well-balanced individual with a superb walk. You can see how he generated that speed: he has a great hindquarter and second thigh.”

Mohaather, out of the SP Roodeye, is a full-brother to American MGSW & GISP Prize Exhibit (GB) (Showcasing {GB}), and a half to the SP Harbour Master (GB) (Harbour Watch {Ire}) and the dam of G1 Queen Anne S. hero Accidental Agent (GB) (Delegator {GB}). Roodeye in turn is a half-sister to the G1 Prix Morny runner-up Gallagher (GB) (Bahamian Bounty {GB}), while under the third dam is the G2 Gimcrack S. victor Bannister (GB) (Inchinor {GB}). Dead Certain (GB) (Absalom {GB}), a European highweight from five to seven furlongs and the winner of the G1 Cheveley Park S., is also a member of the female family tracing to the winning Sirnelta (Fr) (Sir Tor).

Alkumait Supplemented to Dewhurst

Group winner Alkumait (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) has joined the Oct. 10 G1 Darley Dewhurst S. field after a late supplementation. Bearing the Shadwell colours alongside Owen Burrows trainee and G2 Champagne S. bridesmaid Albasheer (Ire) (Shamardal), he is one of 18 in the field for the Newmarket Group 1. The colt broke his maiden at second asking at Goodwood and doubled up with a win at Newbury in the G2 Mill Reef S. on Sept. 19.

“He runs on Saturday and I’ve been very happy with him since Newbury,” said trainer Marcus Tregoning. “Obviously we don’t know what the ground is going to be like yet, and we don’t know how many of the Irish horses are coming over.

“Most Showcasings go on soft ground anyway and as he’s in good form, we thought we had to go for it. It’s been a while since I won the Dewhurst [with Sir Percy] in 2005, but we’ve had nothing good enough to run in it since. Hopefully this is a good horse, he’s looked it so far. The fact Sheikh Hamdan had another horse already entered didn’t come into the reckoning really.”

G1 National S. hero Thunder Moon (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) is also stepping forward, one of three in the race for trainer Joseph O’Brien. His father Aidan also fields three, with G2 Vintage S. victor Battleground (War Front) set to take part, as is National S. second and third Wembley (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and St Mark’s Basilica (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}). The latter was a late scratch from the G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere.

Others still in the field are: G3 Solario S. winner Etonian (Ire) (Olympic Glory {Ire}) and undefeated G2 Champagne S. scorer Chindit (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB})-both for Richard Hannon–and Jessica Harrington’s Sept. 12 G2 KPMG Champions Juvenile S. winner Cadillac (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}). Her Majesty The Queen’s G2 July S. winner Tactical (GB) (Toronado {Ire}) is also among the field at this stage for Andrew Balding, as is G2 Futurity S. winner Mac Swiney (Ire) (New Approach {GB}) for Jim Bolger.

Alkumait Enters Dewhurst Picture

Group 2 winner Alkumait (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) is likely for the G1 Dewhurst S. on Oct. 10, but would need to be supplemented. A winner at Goodwood at second asking on July 28, the Shadwell colourbearer won the G2 Mill Reef S. by 3/4 of a length at Newbury on Sept. 19.

“We were absolutely thrilled with him,” said Sheikh Hamdan’s racing manager Angus Gold of the Marcus Tregoning trainee. “He showed a really nice turn of foot and won very nicely. The Mill Reef/Middle Park double has never really worked out for us, so we were never going to go down that route.

“His action would suggest he prefers top of the ground. That’s not to say he wouldn’t handle cut in the ground, but I certainly don’t think he would want it heavy.

“Marcus would like to run Alkumait again this year–and as he said on Saturday, the only race for him really is the Dewhurst, which we didn’t enter him for because he’d only won a maiden at that stage.

“We’ll see how the land lies. We also have [G2 Champagne S. runner-up] Albasheer (Ire) (Shamardal) as a possible for the Dewhurst–I think he was undone by his inexperience as much as anything at Doncaster.

“There would be a question mark over the trip for Alkumait–but if he settled well, like he did on Saturday, he’d give himself a chance. Seven furlongs at Newmarket is a different test to six at Newbury, so we’ll see.

“It wouldn’t be the end of the world if he didn’t run again this year, [but] the Dewhurst is the best 2-year-old race in England, so if you can give yourself a better chance of winning it, maybe you should. “
