Simply Ravishing Heads Churchill’s Golden Rod

A winner of her first three career starts, Harold Lerner, Magdalena Racing, and Nehoc Stables’ Simply Ravishing (Laoban) found Vequist (Nyquist) too tough in the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Keeneland, but will attempt to return to the top spot in Saturday’s GII Golden Rod S. A debut winner for Ken McPeek going 8 1/2 furlongs over the Saratoga turf Aug. 2, the bay aired by 6 1/2 lengths in an off-turf renewal of the PG Johnson S. Sept. 3. Sent off the 2-1 second choice for the Oct. 2 GI Darley Alcibiades S., the New York-bred dismantled her opposition, rolling home a front-running 6 1/4-length winner. Sent off the second choice in the Nov. 6 Juvenile Fillies, Simply Ravishing ran an even fourth.

“I thought she ran a great race considering how it shaped up early,” McPeek explained. “She didn’t break well at all and had a tough trip the entire way around there. I think it was very promising the way she finished up considering the problems she had.”

Kueber Racing LLC’s Coach (Commissioner) will try to remain undefeated following a trio of victories, including her most recent in Churchill’s Rags to Riches S. Oct. 25. Coach kicked off her career with a pair of Indiana scores, including a 9 1/4-length romp in a 5 1/2-furlong allowance Sept. 15.

“Distance definitely doesn’t seem to be an issue with her,” affirmed trainer Brad Cox. “She loved the extra ground in the Rags to Riches and this race made the most sense for her next start.”

Also carrying the Cox banner is OXO Equine LLC’s Travel Column (Frosted), who earned TDN Rising Star billing following a confident win in a six-furlong Churchill maiden Sept. 4. The grey finished a well-beaten third in the Alcibiades.

“I don’t think the track necessarily played into her favor that day,” explained Cox. “She broke a little slow and couldn’t really make up much ground with the pace. She’s a high-quality filly by Frosted and has trained forwardly out of the race.”

Steven Asmussen packs a one-two punch led by Stonestreet Stables LLC’s Clairiere (Curlin), a first out winner over this track and distance Oct. 25. The filly is out of Cavorting (Bernardini), a winner of six graded races, including a trio at the highest level, for Stonestreet and Kiaran McLaughlin. Asmussen also saddles two-time winner Lady Lilly (Nyquist), third two-back in the Sept. 6 GI Spinaway S.

Shared Sense Has Edge in Discovery

Godolphin’s Shared Sense (Street Sense), a dual Derby winner this season for champion trainer in-waiting Brad Cox, can complete a highly successful season as the likely favorite in Saturday’s GIII Discovery S. at Aqueduct.

Runner-up to next-out GII Toyota Blue Grass S. hero Art Collector (Bernardini) in a June 13 Churchill allowance, the homebred ran out a three-length winner of the GIII Indiana Derby July 8 and was done in by a dreadful draw when fifth to Art Collector in the Aug. 9 Runhappy Ellis Park Derby. The bay colt proved two lengths too strong for his rivals in the GIII Oklahoma Derby Sept. 27 and is the class of this group.

Attachment Rate (Hard Spun) was a deceptively good fifth in the Blue Grass and outran odds of 14-1 to complete the exacta in the Ellis Park Derby. Last but one in the GI Kentucky Derby, he bounced back with a soft Churchill allowance win over a sloppy strip Oct. 29.

Monday Morning Qb (Imagining) was second to future GISW and ‘TDN Rising Star’ Happy Saver (Super Saver) in the Sept. 7 Federico Tesio S. at Laurel and most recently became the first sophomore to beat older horses in the Maryland Million Classic Oct. 24.

Forza di Oro (Speightstown) looks to give his sire back-to-back winners of the Discovery following Performer 12 months ago. A well-backed eighth in the GII Remsen S. over this track and trip last December, the Don Alberto homebred returned to action with a neck success in a one-mile Belmont allowance Oct. 9.

East Coasters Done No Favors In Hollywood Derby Draw

Five horses based with powerhouse outfits on the East Coast have shipped into Southern California for Saturday’s GI Hollywood Derby and in a cruel twist, they have been allocated the ‘visitors’ draw’ in five of the six widest gates in what will be a field of 12.

Trainer Christophe Clement has never won the Derby, but he is double-fisted with a pair of high-quality turf sophomores. Gufo (Declaration of War) has won five of his seven trips to the post, having earned a maiden graded success in the GIII Kent S. at Delaware July 4 ahead of a narrow defeat at the hooves of Chad Brown’s charge Domestic Spending (GB) (Kingman {GB}) in the Saratoga Derby Aug. 15. In his most recent appearance, he sprinted his final two furlongs in a wicked :22.60 off a slow tempo and he’ll be the one they’re gunning for, assuming Flavien Prat can work out a trip from the 12 hole. For his part, Brown has won two of this race’s last four runnings.

Stablemate Decorated Invader, also a son of Declaration of War, has developed a fair bit of versatility this season, sitting relatively handy to the pace when winning the GIII Pennine Ridge S. and using a strong late kick to just miss catching front-running Get Smokin (Get Stormy) in the GII Hill Prince S. at Belmont Oct. 18. Mike Smith rides from stall eight.

Ever Dangerous (Kitten’s Joy), whose sire accounted for 2015 Derby hero Chiropractor, is no stranger to an awkward gate, having overcome the 14 to cause a 74-1 upset in the Nov. 6 Bryan Station S. at Keeneland. Well held by the aforementioned trio earlier in the season, the dark bay colt has the 10 hole Saturday.

Meanwhile, the chief local hope, Smooth Like Strait (Midnight Lute) should enjoy the run of the race from his low draw. Winner of the GIII LaJolla H. going a mile over this course Aug. 9, the homebred was an alibi-free fourth as the 6-5 choice in the GIII American Turf S. at Churchill Sept. 5, but bounced back with a 1 1/2-length defeat of a troubled Scarto (Paynter) in the GII Twilight Derby at Santa Anita Oct. 18.
